Whitehaven Coal has reported a net profit after tax of $157.5 million for the half year ended 31 December 2016. Once again, all key financial performance metrics improved on the previous corresponding period (pcp): Sales revenue of $823.5 million, up by 43%; Operating EBITDA of $324.8 million rose by 205% following significant increase in coal prices; Operating cash flow of $263.6 million, an increase of 123%; Net debt was reduced to $628 million with gearing falling to 17%; and Unit costs were $56/t. Paul Flynn, CEO and Managing Director, was interviewed about the result by Ticky Fullerton on Sky News Business.

As Whitehaven has grown as a business, we have worked to ensure the business maintains strong sustainability practices throughout every stage of the mining process, from prior to commencement, during operations until well after eventual close. Each Whitehaven operation also implements rehabilitation plans, working to minimise potential impacts on the local environment and where appropriate returns mining areas to pre-mining vegetation communities such as pastoral, woodland and forest for future use. This is video is intended to showcase some of the rehabilitation that Whitehaven has carried out to-date and outline our plans for the future in this important area.

Maules Creek is already delivering and will continue to deliver substantial economic and social dividends to the surrounding area: • It has created 250 locally based jobs, and when fully ramped it will create another 200 jobs for locals, or workers prepared to move to the area. • It will inject an additional $68 million in wages into the regional economy every single year, supporting retailers and small business owners. • It will contribute over $90 million per year in royalty payments to the New South Wales State Government when the mine is operating ate 13Mtpa ROM coal. • It will contribute $13 million towards local infrastructure upgrades, improving amenity and liveability. • It will contribute an annual payment of approximately $900,000 to the Narrabri Shire Council as part of the Voluntary Planning Agreement with the Council. • It will provide around $150,000 in grants to local education and other charitable initiatives. • It will provide more than 50 indigenous Australians with skills, training and long term employment.
