How to Password Protect Directories in cPanel

05:32
In this video we will show you how to password protect a directory within the cPanel. Protecting the entire site is sometimes done if someone wants to hide the site from the public until they are finished building it. Protecting specific subfolders is sometimes done for development purposes and others just to allow specific people to have access to that part of the site. This is not meant to replace a membership style site, which is much more complex. This is just for access to a specific area. Think of it like a locked closet in the office where you keep things you don’t want everyone to access. First, log into the cPanel dashboard. Next, look for the correct category. Getting to the tool is a bit different depending on which theme you are using. If you are using the older X3 theme, then you will want to find the “Security” category and then click on the “Password Protect Directories” icon. If you are using the new “Paper Lantern” theme, then locate the “Files” category, which is the top one by default, and click the “Directory Privacy” icon. In either case, a popup will appear asking you which folder level to enter the tool from. For the x theme, select Web Root and then click on “Up One Level” to get to the home directory. The “Paper Lantern” theme already has a “Home Directory” option, so go ahead and click that. You are taken to the protection tool where you can select any folder you want to password protect. Now you get to select the folder you want to protect. If you want to protect your entire site, you want to password protect the entire public_html folder. Simply click on the folder name to go to the next screen. If you want to have a specific subfolder protected, then enter the public_html folder and find the specific folder you want to protect by clicking on the folder image. This takes you to the list of folders underneath for you to choose from. You are now on the Password screen. First, select the checkbox that says “Password Protect This Directory”. You can use this to toggle the password protection after you finish setting up. Next, give the directory a name. This will show in a popup when someone tries to access the area. You could make it say something like “Members Only” or “Private Area”, or anything else you like. Now, you need to create at least one user to be able to access the zone. If it is a workgroup, perhaps you want to have a single username and password. This way you can change a single password to lock everyone out for security reasons. This is normal for project work. If you have a handful of people you want to give access, such as a small privileged area, then you can assign a user to different people. You would need to go through this for each member, however. Once you have created a user and strong password, click on the “Add or Modify the Authorized User” button. This will add the new user to the list. Now, when you attempt to access the site or that specific area, you will be met with the popup to enter a username and password. If it fails, the visitor will get a 401 error page. If it works, they will see whatever they are supposed to see. How to Optimize Your Website with Compression in the cPanel

03:52
A commonly asked question with website hosting is, “How do I optimize my website using compression?” This question is often asked after seeing a performance report indicating that their site could benefit from compression being turned on. Fortunately, the option for compression is loaded by default on InMotion Hosting Servers, but it is not enabled for the website unless you turn it on within cPanel. cPanel provides this functionality with a few simple clicks. Enabling this feature tells the Apache server to compress the content when it replies to a request. This helps speed up the transmission of website components when sent to the viewer. This option can be enabled for all files on the website, or only for a specific type of file. Let’s take a look at cPanel and see how to enable this feature. As you can see here, I have already logged into cPanel. Scroll down until you find the option labeled OPTIMIZE WEBSITE Here you can see that there are three options to Compress Content: Disabled Compress All Content Compress specified MIME types You can enable the option to compress ALL file types that are on your website. This means that when a request is made to view your website all of the files will be compressed by the server before it is transmitted. You can also elect to compress only certain file types. You would need to type in the file types using the MIME designations for the file. MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions - it is simply an Internet standard to classify file types. It’s initial purpose was to identify file types for email. It’s also used to help internet browsers identify file types. For a list of MIME file types, you can use your favorite internet search engine and simply search for “mime file types”. When you add the file type into the blank, separate each file type with a space. The examples include: text/html text/plain text/xml When you have completed adding your file types, or if you have selected to compress ALL files, simply click on Update to enable compression. You can purchase a Pro version that has many more options. Installing the Better Search Replace Login to the WordPress Administrator Dashboard Go to Plugins Click on Add New In the search field, type in "Better Search Replace" When the plugin appears, click on Install Now Click on Activate Plugin when it appears. This will complete the plugin installation. You will see the plugin listed with the other installed plugins. If you click on Tools in the menu at left, you will see Better Search Replace listed. The Settings tab is used to set the Max Page size. There is a slide bar that allows you to decrease the search load on your server. You can also increase the Page size so that your search increases the load on your server resources. The Help tab provides links to support provided by the authors of the plugin. How to add a subdomain within cPanel

03:11
In this video we will show you how to add a subdomain to your account within the cPanel. A domain name is not registered on its own as it is part of an existing domain name. They are commonly used to separate a website into logical components. For instance, say I have a domain named example.com I could have a blog at blog.example.com and an e-commerce store at shop.example.com while my main information is at example.com. First, log into your cPanel. Next, locate the Domains category and click on the SubDomains icon. From here, enter the name for your new subdomain. Note that the document root will be autofilled with the same name you gave the subdomain. You can change this if you want. If the directory does not exist it will be created by cPanel. Click on Create. Now you will see the new subdomain appear in the list below. Allow for a short propagation time so the subdomain can be recognized by domain servers and visitors should be able to visit anything you have on it. How to Add a PDF File to a WordPress Post

05:57
WordPress allows you to add documents of all types into their posts, but one of the most universal file types that can be used is the PDF (portable document format). PDF files allow you develop content on multiple platforms then display them through a browser or reader application on different types of devices. We will be demonstrating how to embed a PDF into a WordPress post and show the difference when using a plugin like the Google Doc Embedder. Before you start, make sure that you have a few PDF files saved into your Media Library. If you have already loaded the Google Doc Embedder plugin, then deactivate it for the first part of the tutorial (Embedding a PDF into a WordPress post Without Using a Plugin) There is a difference in embedding with a plugin like the Google Doc embedder and using the default WordPress option to embed a PDF. The default behavior without the plugin simply adds a link in the post going to the PDF file. In order for a viewer to see the PDF, they must click on the link. Using the Google Doc embedder, you see the actual file immediately without having to click on the link. The plugin provides a framework where the document is immediately seen without clicking on a link. Embedding a PDF into a WordPress Post Without Using a Plugin Login to the WordPress Administrator. Click on Posts. Click on Add New (or Edit existing post). Click on Add Media. Make sure that you are on the Visual tab. Upload the PDF if necessary. Click on the PDF file that you want to add. In the bottom right corner, click on Insert into Post. Click on Update (or Publish for new post). You can then click to Preview Changes in the top right corner, or view site and go to the post if it is published. Notice that WordPress creates a text link of the PDF that was embedded. There is no graphical representation of the PDF. Embeding a PDF into a WordPress Post using the Google Doc Embedder Plugin *If you have deactivated the Google doc embedder plugin, make sure to make it active for this part of the tutorial. If you have not loaded it yet, please add this plugin into your site. You can find it here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-document-embedder/. Note that there are different plugins that can do the same thing, we have no preference for the plugin that you wish to use. Login to the WordPress Administrator. At this point, if you look at the post, you will see that there is shortcode inserted into your post that begins with "[gview file=". This is placed there by the plugin. Click on Preview Changes or go to the post to see the post where you have added the PDF. When you see the post, you will see a graphic that represents the PDF file in place of a link when used without the plugin. This may be preferable to you depending on how you want to show the PDF file. InMotion Hosting was founded in 2001 and provides personal and business web hosting for everyone! cPanel: How to Modify MX Records

05:37
In this cPanel video, we demonstrate how to modify and create MX records within the cPanel. Mx records are email specific DNS records. Because of this, they are not located within the DNS Zone editors of the cPanel. They have been separated into the Email category under the MX Entry tool. Click that tool icon to open up the MX record screen. Here you can create and edit new MX records based on your needs. Note that MX records always point to a domain name, even though they work off of IP addresses. You will need to verify the IP addresses for the domain names using the DNS Zone editors. MX records use a priority sequence based on the lowest number, so be sure to use Priority 0 as your main MX records. Additional records are there to be used in sequence should the primary record's server fail. InMotion Hosting was founded in 2001 and provides personal and business web hosting for everyone! POP vs. IMAP - How to check your email - InMotion Hosting

03:21
In our previous tutorial, we showed you how to create an email account. Before we show you how to setup your email account so you can send and receive email we first need to go over the basics of which tools you can use for that. Most users are familiar with desktop email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook or Mac Mail. If you have a mobile device, such as an iPhone or a BlackBerry, you can check your email on those as well. Another option you have is checking your email in your web browser, using webmail. You can use more than one tool to check your email, and this leads us to POP and IMAP. POP and IMAP are different protocols for using your email. When using POP, email is downloaded and removed from the server. As the email is downloaded to your computer, you can switch between emails much faster than you can using IMAP. You can also store much more email because the email is being stored on your hard drive. One downfall however is that as the email is removed from the server, if you check your email from another device such as an iphone, you won't be able to see all of your old email. This leads us into IMAP. As IMAP keeps email on the server, you can sync multiple devices like an iphone and a desktop email client, and you'll be able to see the same emails from all locations. A downfall of IMAP however is that it does load slower because each time you check your email it must connect to the server to sync the messages. If you receive many emails with large attachments, this also slows down that syncing. In upcoming videos, we'll show you how to setup your email in various email clients, such as an Microsoft Outlook and Mac Mail http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/everything-email/introduction-email/checking-email-account

How to Embed a Microsoft OneDrive Document in a WordPress Post

05:09
One of the most common applications that people use are the Microsoft Office applications that include Excel and Word. Happily, if you don't have these applications, you can still obtain a free account in Outlook.com. Using Microsoft's One Drive, you can open Microsoft Office documents and then get a link that you can use to share the document or embed in a website. For this tutorial, we will be embedding a Word document into a WordPress post. No plugins needed! For this tutorial, I am using an outlook.com account to get the link that can be used to embed a Microsoft document into WordPress post. You'll also need to have a file - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. - that you can share and embed into your WordPress post. The first steps will be to obtain the embed code. Log in to your Microsoft account. In creating this tutorial, we are using a Microsoft Outlook.com account. Click on the OneDrive icon that leads to the application types (onedrive-docmenu.jpg) Click on the application you wish to use. Create or load the document that you want to share. If you have a document that was created on the stand-alone Office application, you may need to upload it into OneDrive before you can open it in the online application of your choice. In the menu along the top of the screen, click on FILE Next, in the menu column in the left-hand side click on SHARE Click on SHARE. You will see the option to Share with People or Embed. Click on Embed. After you click on Embed, you will see a preview of the document. You can adjust the size of the image with the fields of the image size to the right. If you’re satisfied with the image, click on Embed Code at the bottom of the page. This provides you the HTML code to embed the document in an iFrame. Copy the code. The code will be selected by default (as long as you didn’t click anywhere on the page). You can use your CTRL+C keys (command key + C on a Mac) to copy the code, or you can use your mouse. To use your mouse, right-click on the selected code, then select COPY from the menu that appears. On a Mac with the touchpad, you can hold your CTRL key and click on the selected code to get the pop-up menu where you can select copy. The next part will require that you log in to your WordPress account. Login to the WordPress Administrator Click on Posts or Pages Add a new Post or Page, or edit an existing post or page In the visual tab of the editor, paste the Embed code for the Microsoft Document Click on Save Draft or Publish. You can then either Preview the document or view it live on your site if you have published it. InMotion Hosting was founded in 2001 and provides personal and business web hosting for everyone!
