Introduction to the Job Hazard Analysis Process

04:05
The traditional Job Hazard Analysis has potential problems in gathering and analysis of specific task data, as a typical Job Hazard Analysis only focuses on the sequence of steps. The traditional Job Hazard Analysis can miss the behavioral effects and other system component interactions between tools, equipment, materials, work environment, management and the individual employee. This video tutorial presents a new and improved concept for the Job Hazard Analysis incorporating elements from Behavior-Based Safety and Six Sigma. Other video tutorials will take the reader through the entire process of developing tools for identifying workplace hazards, developing systems that support hazard recognition, and managing a Job Hazard Analysis. The book mentioned in this video tutorial can be purchased through Amazon at http://www.emeetingplace.com. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Painting Health Hazards and Their Control 1982

06:42
This is from the 1984 NIOSH video, Dual Protection (14 minutes), an excellent training tool that is still relevant today, 25 years later. It explores ways to control painter exposure to hazardous materials through the substitution of safer materials and equipment and other engineering controls, including ventilation. For more information on health and safety protection for painters, go to: CPWR — The Center for Construction Research and Training, formerly known as The Center to Protect Workers' Rights (CPWR), a world leader in improving the health and safety of construction workers at http://www.cpwr.com/ NIOSH -- the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/ Alaska's Hazardous Paint Handlers Certification program - at http://www.cdc.gov/eLCOSH/docs/d0100/d000178/d000178.html - this requires that professional painters in Alaska be certified through a training course consists of 16 hours of instruction on the identification of hazards and the use of engineering controls, such as ventilation, and protective equipment, such as respirators, rubber gloves and "barrier creams" for the skin. A law creating the program was passed in 1989, after the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that "occupational exposure as a painter is carcinogenic," based on studies showing a consistent excess of cancer among painters. Some recent studies indicate that even the offspring of painters may be at increased risk of cancer or birth defects. Painting is sometimes called "the carcinogenic trade." Materials used by professional painters -- solvent-bearing enamels, epoxies and thinners, for instance -- can cause cancer as well as painful skin rashes, nerve damage and long-term chemical sensitivity. Environment -- safer paint products can be good for the environment and for workers. This approach goes under several names - green chemistry, pollution prevention or toxic use reduction. Riskope Risk Based Decision Making Engineering of Success

00:49
Quantitative Risk Assessment and Risk-Based Decision Making are concepts to apply to daily business decisions at any level of corporations, organizations, institutions. Their positive impact on the sustainability and profitability is demonstrated by case studies drawn from our international practice including entire logistical networks, former battle-field areas (contamination by remnants of war), and information warfare studies. The course demonstrates how risk assessments add value to (industrial) projects and how a proactive use of risk assessment contributes to responsible practice and environmental and social integrity. The book Improving Sustainability through Reasonable Risk and Crisis Management, by F. & C. Oboni, (http://www.riskope.com ) is our text book. The lecturer is Dr. F. Oboni, Ph.D. Please email your preferences (date, city, number of participants, and preferred duration of the course (1 or 2 days). Do not forget to let us know your profession and specific interests). We will then try to match as precisely as possible your requirements in formulating the program of the day(s) and a package with a venue in order to keep the prices to an attractive level. At that time we will inform you and you will be able to register. Hurry up, as we like to keep the number of delegates quite low (max 35). Of course, we can organize in house fully customized courses, world-wide.

HAZUS-MH is a powerful risk assessment software program for analyzing potential losses from floods, hurricane winds and earthquakes. In HAZUS-MH, current scientific and engineering knowledge is coupled with the latest geographic information systems (GIS) technology to produce estimates of hazard-related damage before, or after, a disaster occurs. Potential loss estimates analyzed in HAZUS-MH include: Physical damage to residential and commercial buildings, schools, critical facilities, and infrastructure; Economic loss, including lost jobs, business interruptions, repair and reconstruction costs; and Social impacts, including estimates of shelter requirements, displaced households, and population exposed to scenario floods, earthquakes and hurricanes. ======================== The Homeland Security Foundation of America ("HSFA") http://www.hsfamerica.org http://www.youtube.com/hsfamerica

Risk, Regulation and International Cooperation - Session 4.2

01:26:38
Evidence-based policymaking in risk governance: IRGC framework http://www.irr-network.org This session will deal with the universal problem of factual versus value-based input into policymaking with respect to risk issues. It will focus on the relationship between the scientific and policymaking communities and the difficulties both face in developing and interpreting scientific data as well as identifying and dealing with associated uncertainties. How can we develop and integrate knowledge of societal values within the risk governance process? How can risk governance be improved by ensuring the appropriate structures for and increasing the levels of stakeholder involvement within the risk-related decision-making process? The International Risk Governance Council (IRGC) has developed a framework in which the process of framing, assessing, evaluating, managing and communicating risk allows for a full incorporation of both factual input and judgments reflecting broader societal, environmental and economic values. The session will demonstrate the basic structure of this framework and show how evidence and judgment can be combined.

CSB Safety Video: Anatomy of a Disaster

55:34
Anatomy of a Disaster tells the story of one of the worst industrial accidents in recent U.S. history--the March 23, 2005, explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City, Texas, which killed 15 workers, injured 180 others, and caused billions of dollars in economic losses. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board, an independent federal agency, investigated the accident. The CSB produced this video in March 2008 based on its comprehensive 341-page public report issued in 2007. The video includes a nine-minute animation detailing the events leading up to the blast. It features interviews with members of the CSB investigative team who spent two years studying the causes of the accident. Outside safety experts Prof. Trevor Kletz (Texas A&M University and Loughborough University, UK), Prof. Andrew Hopkins (Australian National University), and Mr. Glenn Erwin (United Steelworkers) provide insightful commentary on the significance of the accident to the world's petrochemical industry. The CSB believes that an understanding of the key findings, recommendations, and lessons from this investigation will help prevent future accidents. To learn more about this and other CSB investigations, please visit CSB.gov.
