More CFMEU corruption & criminality

08:30
The ABC 7.30 program says the Royal Commission into trade union governance and corruption will hear new evidence about the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Electrical Union (CFMEU) after two new whistle-blowers came forward with evidence of the union's corruption and criminality. Former officials from the CFMEU NSW Branch were allegedly threatened and bullied by their colleagues after raising concerns about the union's links to organised crime.

The Warrains - Our MUA

03:57
Maritime Union of Australia The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) is one of the oldest trade unions in Australia with a membership base of some 13,500 members nationally. In the past, many songs have been written about the MUA (including the famous 'Roll On' by the Living End in 1999) however, the union definitely needed a song they could call their own. Retired life member of the MUA and former waterside worker from Western Port Bay and part time poet Barry Swayn wrote the inspiring lyrics for his sons song "Our MUA" and by doing so contributed to a prize winning entry in a recent music competition held by the MUA. The Warrains front man Chris Swayn wrote the music for "Our MUA", which captures the history of both the Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia (WWF) and the Seamen's Union of Australia (SUA). In 1993 both unions amalgamated to form one of Australia's most influential and progressive unions this country has ever seen the mighty Maritime Union of Australia (MUA). The Warrains herald from the lower end of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula and have been playing over the past seven years largely around their home town. The group comprises of Chris Swayn (guitar, vocals) Sophie Pound (bass, vocals) Grant Macmillan (guitar, vocals) and Brendan White (drums). Hands OFF Bob Carnegie

09:46
Australian Council Of Trade Unions The support for Bob Carnegie has swept Australia, from coast to coast. Now, the International Trade Union Confederation has made it clear that the global trade union movement will back up the community support for Bob Carnegie. "Australians everywhere have rallied to Bob's side because they understand that the only contempt involved in this case was the contempt Lend Lease and Abigroup had for values we hold dear in Australia -- the principles of democracy, free speech and the right of association," Mr Crumlin said. "We will not rest until the threat to Bob is over. The rallies today across the nation in support of Bob show that he can rely on the support of his mates and community allies." During the first day of hearings today in Brisbane, construction firm Abigroup decided to drop the majority of its original charges against unionist Bob Carnegie -- from 54 to 18 -- regarding an industrial dispute at the Brisbane children's hospital site last year. Thousands of union members -- including MUA officials -- Australia rallied in support of Bob today in sites around Australia. Recession Busters

Maritime Union of Australia MUA More than 200 wharfies at Port Botany are sacrificing hours and pay to save the jobs of casual workers after a sharp drop in container traffic. Container movements fell from 52,000 a month before Christmas - when the port operator DP World piled on large numbers of casual staff - to just 27,000 a month as the financial crisis took hold. Casuals were hit hard, as their income also halved. Facing redundancies, the Maritime Union of Australia approached DP World with a proposal for 250 full-time rostered staff to reduce their hours from 36 to 35 hours a week, and give up a weekend shift each month. They sank 18 vessels and attacked another 15, killing 277 merchant mariners and 223 medical personnel, as well as attacking Sydney and Newcastle. In 1940-41 German mines sunk 4 vessels, killing 16, and a German submarine sank a vessel in 1944, killing 2. 14 men from Newcastle were among 23 lost when "Iron Crown", en route from Whyalla to Port Kembla, was sunk by submarine I-27 on 4 June 1942; earlier it had damaged "Barwon". On 22 July 1942 Allara" was damaged by enemy action. It was repaired in Newcastle but 5 fatalities of that action are buried in Sandgate General Cemetery.
