Now that we’ve left behind the philosophy of religion, it’s time to start exploring what other ways might exist to find meaning in the world. Today we explore essentialism and its response: existentialism. We’ll also learn about Jean-Paul Sartre and his ideas about how to find meaning in a meaningless world. Biblical Series IV: Adam and Eve: Self-Consciousness, Evil, and Death

02:32:47
I turned my attention in this lecture to the older of the two creation accounts in Genesis: the story of Adam and Eve. In its few short paragraphs, it covers: 1. the emergence of human self-consciousness; 2. mankind's attendant realization of vulnerability, mortality, and death; 3. the origin of the capacity for willful evil, as the ability to exploit that newly-realized vulnerability; 4. the emergence of shame as a consequence of that realization; 5. the shrinking from divine destiny that occurred when shame emerged; and 6. the beginning of true history, with the self-conscious toil that life in history entails. Impossible. Amazing. Breathtaking. The only story that can perhaps match it in terms of impact per sentence is that of Cain and Abel, which we discuss in the next lecture: number five in this twelve part series. Hello friends! I feel like I have started rambling a lot on camera after getting a little comfortable on screen. Do you people prefer these unscripted videos where I gush about my favorite books and authors or would you prefer more scripted, serious stuff. (Which I’m not even sure if I can do, cause I haven’t studied literature as a student 👩‍🎓) Anyways, would love to hear what you people think. Bye!
Crime and Punishment (Episode 1) (1970) movie

01:46:09
Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-law student, kills an old pawnbroker and her sister, perhaps for money, perhaps to prove a theory about being above the law. He comes to police attention through normal procedures (he was the victim's client), but his outbursts make him the prime suspect of the clever Porfiry. Meanwhile, life swirls around Raskolnikov: his mother and sister come to the city followed by two older men seeking his sister's hand; he meets a drunken clerk who is then killed in a traffic accident, and he falls in love with the man's daughter, Sonia, a young prostitute. She urges him to confess, promising to follow him to Siberia. Will he accept responsibility? The Future of Protestantism: A Conversation with Peter Leithart, Fred Sanders, and Carl Trueman

02:29:37
Should the shape of Protestant theology and the Protestant consciousness still be determined by the Reformation's reaction to Roman Catholicism? In late 2013, Dr. Peter Leithart ignited an important dialogue on the meaning, role, and future of Protestantism with a widely-read article at First Things. Join us as we continue that significant conversation and consider what the Reformation means for Protestants today. Is the Reformation over? How should American Protestantism relate to Rome or Eastern Orthodoxy? Will Protestantism need to change if it is to thrive in the 21st century? Dr. Peter Leithart Dr. Fred Sanders Dr. Carl Trueman Moderated by Peter Escalante of The Calvinist International Hosted by the Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University.

Minervan pöllö 3/2010 (2/7), Otto Kronqvist Dostojevski

07:34
"I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man. I believe my liver is diseased." Dostoyevsky was a true Russian. A true Russian has once believed in something greater, has once believed in something that can be achieved, has once believed that a change is possible. And then ended up seeking comfort from the Greater. Well, when Dostoyevsky returned to St. Petersburg and started earning his living by writing, he had money problems. His gambling fever was quite horrific and his wife and brother died. It's no surprise that God comes really close in times like that, especially when the only talent is writing. He was digging the filthiest dirtbuckets, the sludges of humanity by writing. Examining them. Leo Tolstoy tells in War And Peace quite an interesting story. Pierre, a nobleman and a freemason, an overweighted Russian who's fed up with his life, gets caught by the French troops when they occupy Moscow. And as if involuntarily, but at the same time wanting it, is being taken into custody by the French. Because of an unthoughtful order given by an inferior officer, Pierre and other Russian prisoners are being marched in front of a execution squad. But the bullet is being spared, Pierre is not shot. For a nobleman who's fed up with his life, this is a striking awakening. It is absolutely astonishing that at about the same time Fyodor Dostoyevsky is experiencing the same fate. When Dostoyevsky was young, young people in Russia held the opinion that all kinds of problems could be solved if people would be rational egoists. This would be the way to win all the problems of the world. People could live in crystal palaces with each other and enjoy random stuff, have intellectual converstations, labour, get childen, something like this. Bullshit! Yeah, it may feel like we have the same kind of keys in our hands nowadays. One might say, that everyone who has lived in a modern society, has shared similar feelings as Dostoyevsky, for example relating to what life really is, what kind of filth, shit and sleaze this life is. Everyone who has even slightly come into touch with this, understands that this is just bollocks. Everyone who has lived this life, knows that, every one. The fact that Dostoyevsky understood it 150 years ago makes him a real genius. I mean a true genius! And the fact that we still believe in that, makes us, also me, a complete idiot. A complete idiot! Yes, this is what they wanted to achieve then. Lifts, new machines, technology. Technology, that saves us from our own misery! It is no wonder that Fyodor felt a little bit disgusted. These kind of elevators here, running over and over, up and down. As if these would solve the problems of humanity. Well, maybe for that reason Dostoyevsky became to be an ultraconservative, God trusting Russian man. I understand that perfectly well. There's quite a lot of safety in traditions. You do things the same way, the things stay the same way. No novelties, no microwave ovens. Solely one God, one eternal God. What is modernisation, yield, technological widgets compared to that greatness, that only true greatness, that still exists in this world? Absolutely nothing. I got to admit, I agree with that. I agree with that a lot. That is if I believed in God.

Robert Burton: "A Skeptic's Guide to the Mind" | Talks at Google

57:06
You can find Robert Burton's latest book at: http://goo.gl/o2AXh Despite 2500 years of contemplation by the world's greatest minds and the more recent phenomenal advances in basic neuroscience, neither neuroscientists nor philosophers have a decent understanding of what the mind is or how it works. Nevertheless, with powerful new tools such as the fMRI scan, neuroscience has become the de facto mode of explanation of behavior. In A Skeptic's Guide to the Mind, Robert Burton brings together clinical observations, practical thought experiments, personal anecdotes, and cutting-edge neuroscience to decipher what neuroscience can tell us about ourselves-- and where it falls woefully short. At the same time, he offers a new vision of how to think about what the mind might be and how it works. A Skeptic's Guide to the Mind is a critical, startling, and expansive journey into the mysteries of the brain and what makes us human. As an introduction, you can also catch his discussion of his previous book, On Being Certain, at Authors at Google, June 9, 2008 here. About the Author: Robert Burton, M.D. graduated from Yale University and University of California at San Francisco medical school, where he also completed his neurology residency. At age 33, he was appointed chief of the Division of Neurology at Mt. Zion-UCSF Hospital, where he subsequently became Associate Chief of the Department of Neurosciences. His non-neurology writing career includes three critically acclaimed novels and On Being Certain: Believing You Are Right Even When You're Not. He lives in Sausalito, California.

The Machinist (2004 crime drama)

01:41:57
Trevor Reznik is a machinist in a factory. An extreme case of insomnia has led to him not sleeping in a year, and his body withering away to almost nothing. He has an obsessive compulsion to write himself reminder notes and keep track of his dwindling weight, both scribbled on yellow stickies in his apartment. The only person he lets into his life in an emotional sense is Stevie, a prostitute, although he has an infatuation with Maria, a single mother waitress working in an airport diner. His co-workers don't associate with and mistrust him because of not knowing what is going on in his life that has led to his emaciated physical appearance. A workplace incident further alienates him with his coworkers, and in conjunction with some unfamiliar pieces of paper he finds in his apartment, Trevor believes that someone or some people - probably one or some of his coworkers - are out to get him, using a phantom employee named Ivan as their front. As Trevor goes on a search for evidence as to... Written by Huggo

[Has English subtitles.] Hunger Audiobook by Knut Hamsun | Audiobook with Subtitles

06:47:01
Hunger (Norwegian: Sult) is a novel by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun and was published in its final form in 1890. The novel has been hailed as the literary opening of the 20th century and an outstanding example of modern, psychology-driven literature. It hails the irrationality of the human mind in an intriguing and sometimes humorous novel. Written after Hamsun's return from an ill-fated tour of America, Hunger is loosely based on the author's own impoverished life before his breakthrough in 1890. Set in late 19th century Kristiania, the novel recounts the adventures of a starving young man whose sense of reality is giving way to a delusionary existence on the darker side of a modern metropolis. While he vainly tries to maintain an outer shell of respectability, his mental and physical decay are recounted in detail. His ordeal, enhanced by his inability or unwillingness to pursue a professional career, which he deems unfit for someone of his abilities, is pictured in a series of encounters which Hamsun himself described as 'a series of analyses.' In many ways, the protagonist of the novel displays traits reminiscent of Raskolnikov, whose creator, Fyodor Dostoevsky, was one of Hamsun's main influences. The influence of naturalist authors such as Emile Zola is apparent in the novel, as is his rejection of the realist tradition.(Introduction by Wikipedia) Genre(s): General Fiction Hunger by Knut HAMSUN , translated by George EGERTON Chapters: 0:16 | 1. Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev | Audiobook with Subtitles

09:15:38
The fathers and children of the novel refers to the growing divide between the two generations of Russians, and the character Yevgeny Bazarov has been referred to as the "first Bolshevik", for his nihilism and rejection of the old order. Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism that he saw between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the "sons") and the 1830s liberals sought Western-based social change in Russia. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's path lay in its traditional spirituality. Fathers and Sons might be regarded as the first wholly modern novel in Russian Literature (Gogol's Dead Souls, another main contender, is sometimes referred to as a poem or epic in prose as in the style of Dante's Divine Comedy). The novel introduces a dual character study, as seen with the gradual breakdown of Bazarov's and Arkady's nihilistic opposition to emotional display, especially in the case of Bazarov's love for Madame Odintsova and Fenichka. This prominent theme of character duality and deep psychological insight would exert an influence on most of the great Russian novels to come, most obviously echoed in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. The novel is also the first Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, eventually gaining the approval of well established novelists Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Henry James, proving that Russian literature owes much to Ivan Turgenev. 05:04:08
Notes from Underground is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Notes is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done?. The second part of the book is called "Àpropos of the Wet Snow," and describes certain events that, it seems, are destroying and sometimes renewing the underground man, who acts as a first person, unreliable narrator. Crime and Punishment Audiobook by Fyodor Dostoyevsky | Audiobook with subtitles | Part 3

06:54:47
Crime and Punishment is the second of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from 5 years of exile in Siberia, and is considered the first great novel of his "mature" period of writing. The novel focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in St. Petersburg who formulates and executes a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her cash. Raskolnikov, in an attempt to defend his actions, argues that with the pawnbroker's money he can perform good deeds to counterbalance the crime while ridding the world of a vermin, and to test a theory of his that some people are naturally superior and have the right to commit crimes if it is in pursuit of a higher purpose.
