Cassiar an Asbestos Mining Company Town 1960 British Columbia Canada

04:27
Cassiar was a small company-owned asbestos mining town located in the Cassiar Mountains of Northern British Columbia in western Canada. After forty years of operation, starting in 1952, the mine was unexpectedly forced to close in 1992. Most employees were laid off. Efforts to attract new purchasers to keep the mine running company failed so in September 1992 the town, mine and mill infrastructure was auctioned off. The closure was driven by a combination of factors including diminished demand for asbestos and expensive complications faced after converting from an open-pit mine to an underground mine. Most of the contents of the town, including a few houses, were sold off and trucked away. Most of the houses were bull-dozed and burned to the ground in this resource town north of Dease Lake. The mill was briefly reactivated in 1999 by Cassiar Chrysotile Inc which had a reclamation permit to clean up the site. 11,000 tons of asbestos were exported before the mill burned down on Christmas Day of 2000, effectively halting all production. Cassiar was once the largest town in British Columbia north of Fort Nelson, with a population approaching 2,000, its own store, school, hospital, churches and recreation facilities and set in a beautiful alpine valley 100 miles southwest of Watson Lake, Yukon. Asbestos had been known in the area by white men since 1872 and the local Indians had known for centuries that the mountain sheep bedded down on the yellowish-white "fluff" at the north end of Mount McDame. The established asbestos companies in Quebec, Johns-Mannville and Asbestos Corporation thought the deposit too remote, as did ASARCO. Conwest however, recognized the potential of the iron-free long fibre, and in the spring of 1951, began to develop the mine and bring to production, against a monopolistic market, in one of the most inaccessible and remote areas of Canada, the high-grade Cassiar Asbestos Mine. The mine is on the top of a mountain in northern B.C. at 6,000 feet elevation, 86 miles south of Mile 648 on the Alaska Highway and 100 road miles from Watson Lake, Yukon. By 1953 the property was in production. From the beginning it was realized that to maintain a stable work force in this isolated area, provision must be made for married staff. At first the open pit mine was operated only in the summer and ore was stockpiled to feed the mill through the winter but as markets increased it became more economical to operate the mine all year. The product was marketed through Bell Asbestos of Thetford Mines, Quebec, a subsidiary of asbestos manufacturer Turner & Newall of England, whose supply of fibre from South Africa was diminishing. From Whitehorse, the fibre in pallets went by White Pass & Yukon Railway to Skagway, Alaska, then by freighter to Asbestos Wharf in North Vancouver and from there to markets all over the world. For more about the town of Cassiar, check out the website, http://www.cassiar.ca/home/home.htm . For current information on asbestos, the hazards of exposure and to learn how you can help prevent asbestos-related disease, link to and join the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an independent organization founded in 2004. ADAO seeks to give asbestos victims and concerned citizens a united voice to raise public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure. ADAO is the largest victims' organization dedicated to preventing asbestos-related diseases through education and legislation. ADAO's mission includes supporting global advocacy and advancing asbestos awareness, prevention, early detection, treatment, and resources for asbestos-related disease. For more information visit www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org. This is clipped from the 1960 film "The Cassiar Road (the story of a mine on a mountain top)." Sponsored by the Cassiar Asbestos Company, the film shows the sponsor's asbestos mines in British Columbia, including showing mining and milling operations, grading, packing and transport to the docks in Skagway, Alaska. The mining and milling operations in British Columbia began in 1953. They ceased operations in 1992, when it went the Company went bankrupt and subsequently dissolved. Cassiar did not itself manufacture or sell any finished products. Instead it sold the raw asbestos fibers to manufacturers, including companies such as Johns-Manville, Fibreboard, and CertainTeed.

It has a population of about 300. The community first developed between 1900 and 1904 as the residential area for the staff of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company. The residential areas and the mining operation were physically interrelated, resulting in coincidental mining and community disasters through its history. Today, the town is host to the Britannia Mine Museum, formerly known as the British Columbia Museum of Mining, on the grounds of the old Britannia Mines. The mine's old concentrator facilities, used to separate copper ore from its containing rock, are a National Historic Site of Canada Copper mine (1900-1974) A copper discovery on Britannia Mountain by Dr. A. A. Forbes in 1888 led to the development of the Britannia Mine. In 1899, a mining engineer named George Robinson was able to convince financial backers that the property had great potential. For several years, companies were formed, merged and dissolved in efforts to raise capital. The Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, a branch of the Howe Sound Company, finally commenced mining in the early 1900s, and owned the site for the next sixty years. The first ore was shipped to the Crofton Smelter on Vancouver Island in 1904, and the mine achieved full production in 1905. A town had grown up around the mine and a Post Office opened on January 1, 1907 where it was named after the nearby mine. In 1912 John Wedderburn Dunbar Moodie was authorized to upgrade the operation and increase production from the mine. Improvements in the mineral separation processes stimulated plans for a new mill (No. 2), which was completed in 1916 and was capable of producing 2000 tons of ore per day. The onset of World War I increased the demand for copper and the price rose sharply. On March 21, 1915 an avalanche destroyed the Jane Camp. Sixty men, women and children were killed and it was a terrible blow to the tiny community. Construction began immediately on a new, safer town at the 2,200-foot (670 m) level above the Britannia Beach site. This portion of the community became known as the "Town site" or "Mount Sheer". In March 1921 during a brief period when the mine was shut down, mill No. 2 burnt to the ground. On October 28, 1921 after a full day of torrential rain, a massive flood destroyed much of that portion of the community and mine operations that existed on the lower beach area. 50 of 110 homes were destroyed and thirty-seven men, women and children lost their lives. The flood was caused because the mining company had dammed up a portion of the Creek during the construction of a railway, and when this dam gave way the town below was flooded. Carleton Perkins Browning directed the reconstruction of this portion of the community and the new No. 3 mill, which stands today. Being an isolated, close knit community which could only be accessed by boat, life in both of Britannia's towns was never dull. Facilities included libraries, club rooms, billiard rooms, swimming pools, tennis courts and even bowling. A thriving social calendar saw sporting events, theatrical productions, dances, movies and parties held throughout the year. The mine boomed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, becoming the largest producer of copper in the British Commonwealth by 1929, under the management of the mine manager C.P. Browning. In the 1940s there were talks to build an artist village in Britannia's hills, but that plan did not proceed. During the Great Depression, miners unionized in 1946 and suffered through their first strike. Low copper prices saw the Britannia Mine Company reduced to seven employees, and in 1959 it went into liquidation. In 1963 the Anaconda Mining Company bought the property and production continued for the next eleven years. 300 employees managed to produce 60,000 tons of concentrate each year. Ferries services stopped around May 1965 after the highway and railway connections had been constructed. The connections made it easier to transport the copper, but high operating costs and taxes eventually forced the mine to close on November 1, 1974. The company did not attempt to clean up the mine and chemical wastes that it produced, since environmental protection laws had not yet been enacted and enforcement of the Fisheries Act was never applied On April 1, 1975 the BC Museum of Mining was opened to the public, and was designated as a National Historic Site in 1988. The following year, 1989, the Museum site was designated a British Columbia Historic Landmark.

The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013... History Minerals, in the form of copper ore, were first discovered in Bingham Canyon in 1848 by two brothers, Sanford and Thomas Bingham, sons of Erastus Bingham, Mormon pioneers of September 1847, who grazed their family's and other's cattle and horses there. They reported their find to their leader, Brigham Young, who advised against pursuing mining operations... It was not until 1863 that extraction of ore began and the potential of the canyon's mineral resources began to be widely recognized. At first, mining was difficult due to the area's rugged terrain, but a railroad reached the canyon in 1873... it was not until 1898 that plans for very large-scale exploitation of the canyon's ore bodies began to develop. That year, Samuel Newhouse and Thomas Weir formed the Boston Consolidated Mining Company, intending to increase mine development in the canyon. A more significant development took place in 1903, when Daniel C. Jackling and Enos A. Wall organized the Utah Copper Company. Utah Copper immediately began construction of a pilot mill at Copperton, just beyond the mouth of the canyon, and the company actually started mining in 1906. The success of Utah Copper in mining the huge but low-grade porphyry copper type orebody at Bingham Canyon revolutionized the copper industry, and set the pattern for the large open-pit porphyry copper mines that today dominate the copper industry worldwide. Utah Copper and Boston Consolidated merged in 1910. The Kennecott Copper Corporation, established in 1903 to operate mines in Kennecott, Alaska, purchased a financial interest in Utah Copper in 1915 and fully acquired the company in 1936. Bingham's Canyon mine expanded rapidly, and by the 1920s the region was a beehive of activity. Some 15,000 people of widely-varying ethnicity lived in the canyon, in large residential communities constructed on the steep canyon walls. The population declined rapidly as mining techniques improved, however, and several of the mining camps began to be swallowed up by the ever-expanding mine. By 1980, when Lark was dismantled, only Copperton, at the mouth of Bingham Canyon and with a population of 800, remained. For years, the largest open-pit mine in the world, it is still among the world's largest open-pit mines. Work to expand the mine 600 feet (180 m) east began in 2005, continuing to increase its size, growth, and capabilities... The extracted ore is treated at the Kennecott smelter at nearby Magna, Utah... The filtered concentrate slurry is piped 17 miles (27 km) to the smelter... Employing 1,800 employees and hundreds of contractors, 450,000 short tons (400,000 long tons; 410,000 t) of material are removed from the mine daily. Electric shovels can carry up to 56 cubic yards (43 m3) or 98 short tons (88 long tons; 89 t) of ore in a single scoop. Ore is loaded into a fleet of 64 large dump trucks which each carry 255 short tons (228 long tons; 231 t) of ore at a time; the trucks themselves cost about $3 million US each...

12 Biggest Mines

07:39
These huge open-pits in the ground can either be called mines or quarry and they give us amazing things like gold, silver, and copper! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. The Barrick Goldstrike Mine Owned and operated by Barrick Gold, which is the largest gold mining company, the goldstrike mine happens to be the largest gold mine in all of North America. Located in Eureka County, Nevada, the goldstrike mine is comprised of 3 different mines, the larger of the three is the Betze-Post open-pit mine, the Meikle, and the Rodeo, both of which are found underground. This complex of mines is also the largest Carlin-type mine in the world. First opened way back in 1986, the mine not only produces gold but silver as well, which just so happens to be where Nevada gets its famous nickname, the “Silver State”, from. 6. The Oyu Tolgoi Mine The name for this combined open-pit mining project translates to Turquoise Hill and is located in the southern region of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. The mines that are filled with gold-copper ore deposits are actually relatively new and were only recently discovered back in 2001 by the Canadian company Ivanhoe Mines. It’s expected that the mine will reach full capacity in the year 2021. It’s believed that this mine contains around 2,700,000 tons of copper and another 1.7 million ounces of gold. Like with all other mines, the environmental impact that the Oyu Tolgoi mine is often criticized since it is located in such a dry area and uses more than one billion gallons of water each month. 5. The Chuquicamata (choo-kee-kə-mah-tə) Mine In terms of volume, the chuquicamata mine, or the “Chuqui” mine as it’s more commonly known is the second deepest open-pit mine on the planet. This mine can be found in the northern area of Chile where its main export is that of copper. This has been the country’s main export and staple that is crucial to how the people of Chile rely on an income and it’s here that the metal is called “Chile’s salary” ever since they became dependent on the copper industry back when the first World War ended. Copper actually makes up about a third of all the country’s foreign trade but that 33 percent was once at a high percentage of 75% a few years earlier. 4. The Dionysos Marble Quarry This quarry lies on the Penteli Mountain in the town and municipality of Dionysos, Attica in Greece. It’s here that the world famous Dionysos pentelicon marble is extracted. The quarry has been opened for more than a 100 years and it was back in 1949 that it was owned by the Dionysos Marble Company. The quarry currently has 2 underground sites and 9 above ground sites where the marble is extracted. The marble here is protected by law and is solely used for the Acropolis Restoration Project and other ancient buildings in Athens. 3. The Udachnaya Pipe The name of this open-pit mine literally translates to lucky pipe and can be found right outside of the Arctic Circle in Sakha Republic, Russia. This mine was discovered way back in June of 1955 and is believed to contain around 225.8 million carats of diamonds with an estimated 10.4 million carats harvested annually. The diamond mine was taken over by the Russian diamond company Alrosa back in 2010. This is mine also happens to be the third deepest open-pit mine in the world at a depth of 1,970 feet. 2. The Mir Mine Occasionally called the Mirny Mine, this was once a former open-pit diamond mine that is located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. This mine reaches a depth of 1,722 feet deep, along with a diameter of 3,900 feet making it one of the largest excavated holes to ever exist. The mine was first discovered back in June of 1955 by a group of three Soviet geologists. It proved to be rather difficult as it seemed like there was always one problem arising after another. The cold winter months provided harsh conditions that slowed production, the mine suffered a flood in the 90’s, and surface operations would cease in June of 2001 with underground operations still moving forward until the whole mine was permanently shut down in 2004. 1. The Bingham Canyon Mine Known by the locals at the Kennecott Copper Mine, the Bingham Canyon Mine is located in the southwest region of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. This massive chasm is known for being the largest man-made excavation in all of the world. Owned by the Rio Tinto Group, the production of this mine was started an astonishing 110-years ago and since then the mine measures at being 2.5 miles long, 0.6 miles deep, and covers a distance of 1,900 acres. The mine endured a tremendous landslide back in 2013 and then a smaller one later that same year.
