It portrays how over the last 150 years mining has made Australia rich, yet created an unending struggle over who shares in the wealth. It reveals how mining helped forge democracy yet has repeatedly plotted to influence politics and even overthrow democratically elected leaders. Whilst mining has also been deeply damaging to Aboriginal society, ironically in the 21st century, it may be aboriginal people's best hope of economic self-determination.

Ancient Mining Techniques[History Documentary]HD

45:14
Ancient mining techniques go well back into our history – well back into ourprehistory, in fact. As we progressed through the Stone Age, with more and more sophisticated tools and weapons being designed and developed, so too,our need for more and better raw materials for these implements. Stone and flint led to copper, then bronze, gold, silver, iron… all in the name of progress, war, technology, vanity or greed. In fact, it’s ironic (pun intended) that the substance prized and even mined by our ancient ancestors for some of the earliest stone tools and weapons – flint – was later a hindrance encountered by Classical miners – who were in many cases also Classical minors – in gold mining galleries described by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD as “thought to be the hardest thing that exists, except greed for gold, which is the most stubborn of all things. 09:19
Zinc is a chemichal, which is responsible for a number of elements in the human body and helps stimulate the activities of enzymes. Zinc ore deposits are widely spread throughout the world. Zinc ores are extracted in more than 50 countries. China, Australia, Peru, Europe and Canada are the biggest zinc mining countries. Zinc is normally associated with lead and other metals including copper, gold and silver.Around the world zinc production is about 12 million tonnes.Zinc is the fourth most used metal, only being trailed by iron ore, alminium and copper. 80% of zinc mines are underground, 8% are of the open pit type and the remainder is a combination of both. However, in terms of production volume, open pit mines account for as much as 15%, underground mines produce 64% and 21% of mine production comes from the combined underground and open pit mining. Having a low level of zinc makes someone more susceptible to diseases and illnesses. In fact, zinc deficiency is responsible for over 800,000 childhood deaths in the world every year and 2 million adults especially in developing countries. Zinc is found in protein-rich foods, such as beans, red meat (beef and lamb), and peanuts. If you are deficient in zinc, it can also be taken as a supplement. The zinc oxide or ZnO is a white insoluble powder used as pigments in paints, cosmetics, glass, dental cement, batteries, inks, medicine for treatment for skin conditions etc. Sources: International Zinc Association http://www.zinc.org/basics/zinc_natural_occurrence Zinc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc Zinc oxide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_oxide List of countries by zinc production http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_zinc_production Medical news http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/263176.php

Mt. Moss Mining

01:01
Mt Moss Mine is the largest magnetite deposit on Australia's east coast. The mine is situated in the old Ewan mining field, 110km west of Townsville in North Queensland, which saw pioneer Australians explore and mine rich copper and tin in the area from 1890 until the 1930's. Since 1958, various international mining companies including BHP and MIM have explored the area for copper, lead, zinc and tin mineralisation. In 2005 Curtain Bros bought from Jervois Mining NL (a small, publically listed exploration company) mining lease ML10171 and set up a subsidiary company called Mt Moss Mining. From acquisition, Curtain Bros commenced the construction of site workshop facilities, offices, laboratory, camp and accommodation facilities as well as 50 km of roads to a standard suitable to haul large tonnages of iron ore product. During the construction phase, over 30,000 meters of combined percussion chip and diamond core drilling was completed to delineate a magnetite iron ore resource in excess of 20Mt. The potential for significant additional resources containing copper and zinc credits is very high. Mining commenced from the Willett's Knob, stage 1 pit in 2007. A stage 2 pit cutback commenced in November 2007 and was completed in early December 2008 to a depth of approximately 70 meters. Mount Moss Mining is processing stockpiled magnetite ore through two separate benification circuits to produce two saleable product streams. The mine employs over 75 personnel working across all mining areas including mobile and fixed plant operators, and mechanical and electrical trades, geology, mines engineering, metallurgy, administration, catering and housekeeping.

21:10
Connemara’s strategic objective is to create shareholder value by exploring in Ireland, one of the most prospective countries in the world for zinc, using our experience to identify prospective ground and develop joint ventures with major mining companies. Ireland continues to produce over 25% of Western Europe’s zinc and lead at Boliden’s Tara mine. All the major players are involved here including Glencore and Teck and recently Vedanta and Lundin. Connemara has interests in 3 major project blocks in close proximity to zinc mining operations or with drilled mineralisation. There is a current revival of interest in gold with exploration and reserve definition projects as well as mining ongoing in a number of areas, notably the operating Omagh Gold Mine and the significant gold reserve established at the Curraghinalt Project in County Tyrone. Connemara is following up on its 2016 discovery in bordering County Donegal at its 100% owned Inishowen Project.

The same day as we visited the Buick Mine and Mill, we got the chance to tour the Casteel Mine's crusher and headframe. This mine is active, and ships its ore by truck to the Buick Mill for concentration. Casteel started production in the mid-1980s, and has at least ten years' worth of production remaining. For tax purposes, mining companies tend to not keep multiple decades of proven reserves on the books; the New Lead Belt has had "about ten years left" for twenty or thirty years now. Interestingly, Casteel's No. 35 shaft seems to use the headframe originally used at the No. 27 mine. The video makes it very clear that this headframe, while over a fairly new mine, is actually quite old, dating to the mid- to late 1950s. I found the geometry of the headframe, with the ore bin perpendicular to the hoisting cables, very unusual- I have never heard of a headframe with this arrangement before, and suspect that it was selected due to the cramped nature of the No. 27 site. Gail and I have visited No. 27, but it was extremely dark and all buildings were cleared off the site forty years ago anyways. The only thing of interest there was the Viburnum municipal water pump over the old service shaft; it was not worth uploading a video. Casteel uses a jaw crusher connected to its ore bin to size down run-of-mine ore. The crusher is run by a third-party contractor. A front-end loader then loads crushed ore from the stockpile into trucks, also run by contractors. Each truck holds 22-23 tons of ore. Casteel is not connected to Buick underground, so surface haulage is the only option. The Casteel mine uses CAT loaders and Volvo articulated trucks for most haulage underground. Several remote-control LHDs are also maintained for pillar-trimming/robbing (retreat mining), which is significantly more hazardous than conventional room-and-pillar mining. Remotely-operated equipment keeps miners out of harm's way, and keeps both MSHA and miners' families happy. Unfortunately, there was not time to get underground today. I suspect that I'll be underground somewhere in the New Lead Belt within the next year or so; THAT will definitely earn a video! I would like to thank the Doe Run Company for allowing us access to the Casteel Mine.

Australian Property Downturn 2018

04:51
Australian house prices have been in the news again, and not for the right reasons. Experts warn that due to factors such as unemployment, underemployment, lacklustre wage growth, weak house prices, and the looming threat of interest rate rises, mortgage stress is set to surge. Rates of mortgage default are highest in the mining states of Western Australian and Queensland. 15 of the top 20 worst performing suburbs are in these two states. Credit ratings agency Moody’s suggests that the situation will only get worse as more and more interest-only loans are converted to principal and interest loans over the next 12 months. The Australian dream of owning your own home is looking less and less likely for a growing number of Australians. Martin North, of Digital Finance Analytics, makes a comparison with the current state of the Australian housing market with that of Ireland in 2007 just as its property market started to crash. All current metrics indicate that Australia is in a massive property bubble — metrics such as high debt-to-income and price-to-rent ratios. Australia currently has very low mortgage interest rates, and up until recently, very loose lending policies, which ultimately encouraged speculative buying. Many newly constructed apartments are simply not selling. A lot of property developers are now in financial difficulty. Interest rates can’t get any lower, so only have one direction they can go — up. The number of interest-only loans in Australia is staggering. Over the next few years, a total of about $360 billion of interest-only loans will roll over to interest plus principal, which equates to higher repayments for borrowers. We’re setting ourselves up for one massive fall. Although, the Reserve Bank of Australia may not increase domestic rates any time soon, the big Australian banks all borrow offshore. The US, for example, has raised its rates eight times in the last few years. Australian banks will be forced to raise their mortgage rates regardless of the RBA’s movements — and that’s exactly what we have seen over the last month or two. Currently, there are also quite low rental yields. That is, properties are relatively expensive to buy compared to renting them. This is often a sign that the market is overvalued. If people cannot afford to buy the house they are currently renting, then something is askew. Sydney University economics professor Colm Harmon stated that this situation cannot persist long-term without something giving way. About 40% of first-home buyers are unable to get finance due to recent restrictions imposed by Australia’s regulators. If you go back two or three years, almost everybody could get a loan. Australians are now one of the most indebted people in the world at about 200% of household income. Last week, Sydney house prices fell for the 12th consecutive month. Is this the beginning of a slow deflation, or a gigantic burst? Many forecasters predict a reduction of 10% as a “base case”. What if the declining prices result in a sudden halt to the housing construction boom? Then of course, lots of people will lose their jobs increasing the number of housing loan defaults. This will lead to forced sales adding more pressure on an already struggling market. In this sort of situation, many people will be left with debts greater than the value of their property. Homeowners typically will do anything to keep a roof over their heads, but investors are more likely to sell when they see signs of a downturn in order to minimise their losses. Some companies are already preparing themselves for a property crash. AustralianSuper, Australia’s largest superannuation fund, is changing its rules so that members cannot suddenly withdraw investments from their property fund in the event of a downturn. Whatever happens, we certainly need to reconsider the Australian dream of owning our own home. We could help the matter by improving our tenancy laws. Will Lithium Shortage Kill The EV Industry?

06:10
First I thought we should talk about where you can find lithium today. The truth is it’s likely on your body right now, you may be holding it in your hand, or you’re looking directly at it. But you might be surprised to know it’s also used in things like tools, aerospace equipment, military applications and backup storage for our Electric grid. And of course, Tesla’s and other electric cars // Looking to buy a Tesla S or X? Use our referral code and instantly receive $1,000 off and Free Supercharging! (limited) Get Started - https://teslanomics.co/td // It is so good for batteries that 39% of all Lithium production goes towards battery production. So what is Lithium anyway? Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. We’ve got a long road ahead of us and probably by the time we need to worry about a shortage of Lithium we’ll have a new way to make batteries that are even better. // Join Our Community on Patreon! "Rubies from Montepuez, Mozambique" by GIA

18:09
In this video, you’ll explore Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby deposit with GIA’s dedicated field gemology team. First, you’ll see how the legal owner of the mining rights—Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), a subsidiary of the Gemfields corporation—works the area in steps from prospecting through separating the rubies from the ore, to sorting and eventual sale at their Singapore rough auction. In the second part you’ll also catch a glimpse of a day in the life of the thousands of unlicensed miners—garimpeiros—who conduct unauthorized mining in the MRM-owned area. Since spring 2009, this east African country has emerged as the world’s leading ruby source. As Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu says of the Montepuez ruby deposit: “I have never seen any place where you have this combination of quantity, nice color, and nice clarity.” Every gem miner dreams of finding a big stone one day. “The garimpeiros here, most of them are local (meaning Mozambican) people,” explains Pardieu, “but there are also some Tanzanians here who are working with them. And the Tanzanians have a very good knowledge of ruby mining because you have ruby mining in Tanzania for more than 50 years.” You’ll see the conditions garimpeiros work under—the pits, the dirt—the rubies they find and how they live, and visit a garimpeiro village. Finally, you’ll visit foreign buyers in Montepuez, which, Pardieu explains, consist of “about 500 to 600 Thai people and about 100 people from Sri Lanka.” The cash gained by these buyers provides the economic impetus for continuing unauthorized mining inside the MRM perimeter. This GIA Field Expedition (FE56) took place in September 2014. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

Lao NEWS on LNTV: A recent report reveals Lao mining sector eyes larger output.9/1/2015

03:49
VO A recent report from the Ministry of Energy and Mines reveals Lao mining sector eyes larger output INTRO: A recent report from the Ministry of Energy and Mines reveals that production in the mining sector is expected to increase in value this fiscal year, though the slump in the global ore price is still reflected in Laos' mining output. STORY: The ministry's report states that production in the mining sector is expected to increase in value to about 14.785 trillion kip in fiscal year 2014-15. The growth rate will be about 12.66 percent more than last fiscal year, the report noted. To achieve this goal, the ministry reported that the sector will have to produce larger quantities of important ores. Target figures include include 24.88 tonnes of mixed gold and silver ore, 91,600 tonnes of copper ingot, 350,000 tonnes of copper ore, 470,000 tonnes of potash ore, 1,200 tonnes of lead ore, and 600,000 tonnes of gypsum. But a current downturn in the world ore price caused the output value of the Lao mining sector to drop by almost 9 percent in the 2013-14 fiscal year compared to the previous year. The ministry reported, output in the mining sector fell by 8.88 percent. The sharp drop in production value in the mining sector in 2013-14 was largely caused by the cessation of gold mining at the MMG LXML Sepon gold and copper plant, when it was impacted by the falling global ore price. Another significant factor was the stoppage of production at the Viengphoukha coal mine in Luang Namtha province when the concession agreement ended. The slump in ore prices affected gold, potash and copper, and no new mining ventures replaced the lost production. The gold price began falling in the third and fourth quarters of fiscal year 2012-13, dropping to US$1,200 - US$1,300 per ounce, and significantly impacted gold production in Laos. The mining sector produced about 30.01 tonnes of gold and silver in 2013-14 – an increase of 36.8 percent on 2012-13, but the market price dropped by about 29.15 percent. Both local companies and overseas investors operate mines in Laos, including investors from Asean countries. As of September this year, there were 69 companies operating 107 mining projects on a total area of 274,663 hectares in Laos, the ministry's report noted. Mining operations fall into two main groups: one group excavates ore and processes it. This group comprises 50 companies operating gold, copper, coal, lead, potassium and gypsum mines. Companies in the other group are preparing to begin excavation and the construction of processing factories. This group comprises 19 companies who will operate gold mines in Vientiane, Attapeu and Borikhamxay provinces.

BHP Billiton spin-off to simplify world's biggest mining company

00:46
BHP Billiton - the world's biggest miner - has announced it will shift a number of its businesses into a separate company in order to focus on its most profitable activities. In essence it is a demerger as most of them were acquired by BHP when it merged with Billiton in 2001. The new entity, worth an estimated $16 billion (12 billion euros), will include aluminium, manganese, nickel, silver, lead and zinc, as well as coal mines in some countries. Investors were not impressed and the share price fell, but analysts said that was because the company did not announce a special dividend or a buy back of the stock and that the sell-off was overdone. BHP has said it wants to pay down its debt before returning capital to shareholders… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2014/08/19/bhp-billiton-spin-off-to-simplify-world-s-biggest-mining-company euronews business brings you latest updates from the world of finance and economy, in-depth analysis, interviews, infographics and more Subscribe for daily dose of business news: http://bit.ly/1pcHCzj Made by euronews, the most watched news channel in Europe.

Rox Resources fires up on new nickel discovery

06:53
Rox Resources Ltd is one of AustraliaÆs most successful junior minerals exploration companies. The Company recently released a very positive scoping study on its flagship Fisher East Nickel Sulphide Project in the Western Australian goldfields region, and also announced a new nickel sulphide discovery at its Sabre Project. The Sabre discovery, lying 6 km along strike of the known Camelwood and Musket Projects, demonstrates the exploration potential of the region, and the potential for further discoveries to be made along the Mount Fisher Greenstone Belt, which is almost entirely controlled by Rox Resources. The scoping study outlined two financially robust development options for the development of a box cut decline and underground mining operation at Fisher East. The first option is to develop a 500,000 tonnes per annum processing plant at Fisher East to produce nickel concentrates for a capital cost of approximately $85 million. The second option involves toll milling ore and selling it to a third party for processing into nickel concentrates for a capital cost of approximately $21 million. Both options have demonstrated a robust economic return based on current nickel prices, exchange rates and Mineral Resources, and the economics are expected to improve significantly as further drilling defines additional sources of nickel sulphide mineralisation and increases the mine life of the project. Rox has committed to completing a Pre-Feasibility Study on the Fisher East Nickel Sulphide Project. In addition to its WA nickel project, Rox also has a significant investment in a joint venture with Teck Australia to explore one of AustraliaÆs largest undeveloped zinc projects at Teena/ Reward, located next to the McArthur River Zinc Project in the Northern Territory. Rox also owns 100% of a copper play at Bonya in the Northern Territory, which lies in the heart of a known copper producing region and adjacent to the Jervois Copper project.

Yet Another Poem About Coal Mines and Global Warming #StopAdani

03:16
I often feel frustrated that mainstream discussions around mega-mines like the Adani Carmichael coal mine are framed as binary ‘jobs vs the environment’ debates. Although big mining companies like to tell us otherwise, the coal industry actually employs a fairly small number of people compared to other more socially valuable industries like agriculture and tourism. I’ve spoken to plenty of resource industry workers in places like Gladstone and Mackay who tell me that the big mining companies consistently place profits ahead of their employees’ long-term welfare, and that as soon as the boom slows down, they cut people loose. The big end of town tries to manipulate us into thinking that this a question of inner-city latte-sippers versus workers in the regions, when actually it’s about a few tax-dodging multinational corporations screwing over all of us (wherever we live). Personally I can’t stand lattes. If I’m perfectly honest, I also don’t really care all that much about clown fish. But I do care about the millions of people around the world whose lives will be destroyed by floods and droughts if small, wealthy, developed nations like Australia don’t lead the charge in advocating for drastic global action to prevent climate change. There are no jobs on a dead planet. A ‘strong domestic economy’ won’t count for much when a billion climate refugees are looking for safety, and prime agricultural land turns to desert. I’m sure there are politicians in both the major parties who are privately opposed to projects like the Adani mega-mine but feel they have to toe the party line. They are cowards. If they don’t publicly oppose and vote against it, they are colluding with billionaires who would happily screw over the rest of us in pursuit of greater profits. Anyone who thinks that we can’t improve ordinary people’s quality of life unless we support the fossil fuel industry is a sucker. Just because some cashed-up lobbyist tells you this is the only way to create jobs and generate revenue doesn’t make it true. All of us have a moral duty to prevent projects like this from going ahead – to stand up for the rights of First Nations peoples, to protect our water table and farmland, to challenge the corruption and manipulation of our political system, to give voice to the billions of people in poorer countries who will be hit hardest by climate change, and to preserve global ecosystems for future generations. In a context where big business is undemocratically influencing political decision-makers, the moral duty to prevent these mega-mine projects overrides the more general moral duty to abide by the rule of law. But this isn't just about one coal mine. This is about a morally bankrupt system that is structurally incapable of responding to the impending threat of climate change. Regardless of whether this particular coal project actually goes ahead, the fact that our political establishment is even entertaining the idea of supporting it, and continues to do so little to shift away from coal exports and fossil fuel dependency, shows how ineffective our political leaders really are. I’m willing to get arrested if I think it will help stop the Adani Carmichael coal mine going ahead, and I know thousands of other people are too. Take note Premier Palaszczuk. http://www.stopadani.com/why_stop_adani https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wfjwlWlGTk
Federalism and a Mining Tax: Part I

09:10
Until recently the taxation of minerals and petroleum found within the territory of a State has been a matter for the State. Land grants within the State normally reserved minerals to the Crown. But this is to the Crown in the right of the State, not the Commonwealth. In 2010 the Rudd government proposed a 40% super profits tax on mines and petroleum found within the territory of the States. The miners said this would lead to a total effective tax rate of 55% which would make Australia uncompetitive. When the Rudd government fell, the new Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Treasurer Swan negotiated an agreement with the three largest foreign miners for a substitute tax, the MRRT. This will lead to a lower effective tax rate for the three foreign miners than that payable by the others including the Australian miners. In addition the offshore PRRT will be extended to petroleum resources found within the territory of the States. Both taxes raise important constitutional and federalism issues which are discussed in this presentation . This part, Part I, serves as an introduction.

Any tips for trading or investing in mining shares?

07:59
Any tips for trading mining companies? Common mistakes to avoid? Charles Gibson: Head of Mining at Edison Research comments. The most common mistake is the resource multiple and that is when you take a company's enterprise value and divide it by the resources in the ground and you say it has so many dollars per ounce. There's no error in doing that per se' but this data isn't sufficient to compare it with other mining companies which may be in other geographical regions or at a different stage of development. You cannot for instance compare an explorer with a producer...Beware of the risks in particular execution risks.
