2013 Masquerade Ball and Wine Tasting: National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, Leadville, CO

01:33
Every year, the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville, Colorado hosts a fund raiser with the wonderful idea of a Victorian-era Ball and wine tasting. The music is provided by a top notch string orchestra and the dances are easy to learn. In addition, the specimens and inter-active displays are part of the wine tasting loop, so you have opportunities for a very interesting evening. We always enjoy the silent auction because we know the proceeds go to supporting this very wonderful institute and because we end up with some fine bargains (like a 12-inch stack of Rancher's Reserve T-Bones!)

Women's Mining Coalition Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award

04:20
The National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum hosted it's 29th Annual Induction Banquet in Las Vegas on Sept. 24, 2016. The Women's Mining Coalition were the recipients of the Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award. Every year, the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum selects an individual or entity that has demonstrated ongoing, innovative work educating the public, policy makers, educators, or related institutions about the importance of the mineral and mining industry to our everyday lives. The awardee is selected from a pool of nominations reviewed by the National Mining Hall of Fame’s Prazen committee. After an unprecedented election of women to Congress in 1992, geologist Kathy Benedetto saw an opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. and educate these newly elected women lawmakers about minerals exploration and mining. Kathy recruited the help of two other female geologists, Ruth Carraher and Debra Struhsacker, and together they organized what would become an annual Fly-In to meet with our nation’s policy makers. Women’s Mining Coalition (WMC) evolved from that first Fly-In in 1993 and its membership continues to actively educate and advocate for the mineral and mining industry. The Fly-ins garner the attention of our legislators and federal agencies and send the message, “A strong mining industry is vitally important to our nation, our communities, our families, and our livelihoods.” WMC members emphasize that many jobs all across the country depend on mining and practically everything we use in our daily lives is the direct result of mined products. WMC has recruited its membership such that it has representatives from coast to coast and from all aspects of the mining industry including geologists, engineers, metallurgists, miners, environmental experts, attorneys, mining vendors and suppliers, energy producers, and other related fields. WMC members advocating for the varied mineral and mining sectors are able to provide policy makers with first-hand information about the technological advancements and environmental stewardship of today’s mining industry. Particularly effective among policy makers is the fact that WMC members are not typical lobbyists; they are daughters, wives and mothers as well as highly qualified mining industry professionals. Full length biographies and photographs of all inductees can be accessed on the NMHFM web site at www.mininghallofame.org along with additional information about the museum and its facilities. Mineral Belt Trail Chad's Shelter Leadville Today

03:11
The Mineral Belt Trail (MBT) is a 11.6 mile non-motorized trail which loops around Leadville, Colorado and meanders through the historic mining district. In this video, the Mineral Belt Trail installs the fourth, and final, shelter in the southwest quadrant of the trail, between mile marker 10 and 11, thanks to some help from Lake County Public Works. This last structure - Chad’s Shelter - has been named in honor of Chad Smith, son of Dick and Charlene Smith. He would have carried on the fifth generation of the Smith Lumber business, which started in Leadville in 1900. Sadly, Chad Smith passed away in 2013; Smith Lumber closed its doors a little more than a year later, in July 2014. For more on this story, turn to Leadville Today website.

Leadville Home Tour pt.1

03:55
At 10,152 feet, it's the United State's highest incorporated city. In addition to the rich mining history, the unique, creative, artistic paint schemes on the Victorian houses and other distinctive house designs create an eclectic array in this small town. Leadville was home to H.A.W. Tabor, who became almost as famous for leaving his wife and marrying a younger woman as for discovering one of the richest silver strikes in the state. His second wife, Baby Doe Tabor, became the stuff of legends — there's even an opera about her. Leadville was a very influential boomtown — it was almost named as Colorado's capital city. Well-preserved, Leadville has 70-square city blocks of Victorian buildings, all part of a designated National Historic Landmark District, along with 20-square miles of a preserved mining district. More than 50 buildings date back to the 1870s, including the Tabor Opera House. Leadville is located in the geographic center of Colorado, on U.S. Hwy. 24, part of the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway. The town's paved Mineral Belt Trail offers year-round recreation for bikers, hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers. In winter, head out to Ski Cooper, a great and affordable family ski area; in summer, catch a ride on the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad excursion. And don't miss the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, a truly fascinating look at the powerful industry and all the metals that helped build the state. Just 20 miles from the town of Leadville at the base of Independence Pass is the historic Twin Lakes area, where you'll find world-class fishing and some of Colorado's most spectacular lake and peak scenery. Twin Lakes is close to the trailhead of Mount Elbert and the renowned Interlaken Hotel historical site. It's a true small-town American West experience.

leadville colorado 1950s

05:58
Found some old 8mm movies that my father took of Leadville Colorado in the 1950’s not sure of the exact date. This is where he was born and he worked in the mines there as a teenager. He was born in 1918. I guess he was on a hill doing a panorama shot of his home town. The quality is not all that great but that is the way cameras were way back then. The house towards the end of this video is where he was raised along with his 13 brothers and sisters (from 1 mother and father) and the last building was his church. I am sure Leadville has changed now , but I have not been there (that I can remember).

Start of the Leadville Trail 100

02:56
The runners in the 2015 Leadville Trail 100 were up and running before the rooster crowed in the old mining town high in Colorado's Rocky Mountains on Saturday, Aug. 22. Nearly 800 lined up on 6th St. for the legendary shotgun start, then trotted into the night. The fastest men will finish in about 16-to-17 hours. The top women will make it back to Leadville in about 19 hours. The overall race record is held by Matt Carpenter of Manitou Springs, who in 2005 became the first runner to finish in daylight. He clocked 15 hours, 42 minutes, 59 seconds.

Hebrew Cemetery, Leadville, Colorado

01:44
In 1880, the Hebrew Benevolent Association established the Hebrew Cemetery in the southwest corner of Leadville’s Evergreen Cemetery. When the town’s overall population began to decline in 1893, burials at the cemetery dwindled. The Temple Israel Foundation acquired the title to the cemetery in 1993, ending a long period of neglect. Since 1994, the Denver chapter of B’nai B’rith has led volunteer efforts each June to maintain the grounds and replace markers. Since then, the cemetery was reconsecrated and began holding Jewish burials again in 2001.
