Canadian Legends: The Lost Lemon Mine

06:05
Support the history page for as little as $1 a month: https://www.patreon.com/bairdo Join the Canadian history chat on Discord: https://discord.gg/zVFe36E There are tales of a mine in Alberta, one so legendary that whoever finds it will be set up for life with the riches inside. The trick is finding the mine, which may or may not exist. For over a century now, its legend has persisted as the mine itself has remained lost to history. It is the Lost Lemon Mine, and few mines in the Rockies are as well-known, or as sought after. Many call it the greatest mystery of the Canadian Rockies and those who have looked for it have met with failure, and in some cases, death. The tale begins in 1875 with Sir Cecil E. Denny, a baron from England who moved to Edmonton to become a police officer and author. Serving with the North West Mounted Police as an inspector, he arrested a Mexican outlaw and whiskey trader. The outlaw began talking about a cache of gold dust hidden in a rock cleft in the mountains, coupled with a tale of murder. Highly skeptical of the story, Denny asked that the outlaw lead him to it. They journeyed to the spot and found two skeletons and a buckskin bag that was in very poor condition. Around the ground was gold dust, valued at hundreds of dollars. That is where the tale ends of Denny, and the outlaw, who paid a fine and disappeared. Four years later in 1879, Joe Lemon and his partner Black Jack apparently found the mine, and the gold inside. Sadly, gold can make people do strange things and after an argument over whether or not they should return in the spring, or camp at the location. The argument became heated enough that after they bedded down, Lemon apparently murdered Black Jack with an axe to the head. Resolving to leave the camp the next morning, Lemon built a huge fire and paced back and forth with a rifle, mumbling to himself as he slowly went mad, or at least had a mental breakdown. He would make his way back into civilization and confessed to his crime. According to legend, some Blackfoot saw the murder take place and they told their chief. Chief Bearspaw then put a curse on the area and had his tribe swear they would never reveal the mine to anyone. They also destroyed the entire site, and all evidence of anyone being there. It is also rumoured that Black Jack terrorized his former friend with glowing eyes staring at him, slowly driving Lemon insane during that fateful night. Some accounts say that as soon as Lemon would leave the area around the mine, he would regain his senses. Upon reaching civilization, he confessed to a priest, but again accounts differ and some say he led a group of miners towards the Lemon Mine but again as he approached the area, he once again went insane. Regardless of what happened following the murder, Lemon was eventually sentenced to death by hanging for the murder. He would pass away from smallpox before he could be hanged. Interestingly, according to Frank Anderson, a folk historian, Black Jack did not die at the hands of Lemon, but quietly as an old man in 1913. As word spread about the mine, hundreds of men began searching over the years. John McDougall, who had been dispatched to bury the body of Black Jack, would later lead a party to the mine area. Prior to meeting up with a group of miners, he stopped at a fort in Montana, sat down to drink and promptly drank himself to death. Lafayette French, a pioneer in southern Alberta, reportedly found the mine and returned to High River. Soon after arriving at his cabin on Willow Creek, the building burned down, taking all the evidence, and French's life, in the process. In the 1930s, there were reports of gold in the area of where the mine was reported to be. An expedition was led by an experienced trapper and prospector named George Pocaterra, but no gold and no mine, were ever found. Despite this, 200 to 300, and by some accounts 700, men came upon the area looking for gold, but none was ever found and within 10 days, everyone had left the area. Fred Caron wrote a diary of this short gold rush. Another man by the name of Barb Wire Johnny, who lived in the Willow Creek area, spent a great deal of his time in the mountains and stated he had found the mine at one time. While he said he knew where the mine was located, he never revealed it to anyone. Today, while many have attempted, no one has ever found the fabled mine again.

There's still Gold at the Abandoned Eldorado Gold Mine, Ontario

07:46
There's still gold at the abandoned Eldorado Gold mine in Ontario. History books state the highly improbable theory that all the gold at the now abandoned Eldorado Gold Mine in Ontario was concentrated in a single fissure, but in reality the area was leaking gold out in the pockets of the many workers. According to Kim Woodside, there were many mines that could have been productive.

Coal-location-date relationships text mined from Early Canada Online (Canadiana.ca)

01:24
This video displays some early data from the Trading Consequences project (@digtrade). We use the Edinburgh Geoparser to added lat/long data for all of the locations found in the corpus. We then extract the relationship between a lexicon of commodities, in this case coal, and geogrounded location (i.e. when we find coal and a place name in the same sentence). Currently we use the publication date, but hope to text mine more precise dates in the near future. Finally, we use ArcGIS's new time function to create a video showing the geography of coal mentions changing over time in the corpus. We've also added a tensity "heat map" showing the regions of the world where coal is mentioned most often over the whole of the long-nineteenth century.

Nova Scotia gold history and cartography is explored and examined from this vintage map that was originally produced in 1906. In the video we zoom in and look at various locations throughout Nova Scotia that display the discovery of mineral and gold deposits. Analyzing the geography of the map seems to point to several gold deposits and discoveries in the north-east portion of Nova Scotia along the coastal vicinity. The granite deposits seem to dominate the southwestern portions of the province as a whole.

12 Biggest Mines

07:39
These huge open-pits in the ground can either be called mines or quarry and they give us amazing things like gold, silver, and copper! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. The Barrick Goldstrike Mine Owned and operated by Barrick Gold, which is the largest gold mining company, the goldstrike mine happens to be the largest gold mine in all of North America. Located in Eureka County, Nevada, the goldstrike mine is comprised of 3 different mines, the larger of the three is the Betze-Post open-pit mine, the Meikle, and the Rodeo, both of which are found underground. This complex of mines is also the largest Carlin-type mine in the world. First opened way back in 1986, the mine not only produces gold but silver as well, which just so happens to be where Nevada gets its famous nickname, the “Silver State”, from. 6. The Oyu Tolgoi Mine The name for this combined open-pit mining project translates to Turquoise Hill and is located in the southern region of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. The mines that are filled with gold-copper ore deposits are actually relatively new and were only recently discovered back in 2001 by the Canadian company Ivanhoe Mines. It’s expected that the mine will reach full capacity in the year 2021. It’s believed that this mine contains around 2,700,000 tons of copper and another 1.7 million ounces of gold. Like with all other mines, the environmental impact that the Oyu Tolgoi mine is often criticized since it is located in such a dry area and uses more than one billion gallons of water each month. 5. The Chuquicamata (choo-kee-kə-mah-tə) Mine In terms of volume, the chuquicamata mine, or the “Chuqui” mine as it’s more commonly known is the second deepest open-pit mine on the planet. This mine can be found in the northern area of Chile where its main export is that of copper. This has been the country’s main export and staple that is crucial to how the people of Chile rely on an income and it’s here that the metal is called “Chile’s salary” ever since they became dependent on the copper industry back when the first World War ended. Copper actually makes up about a third of all the country’s foreign trade but that 33 percent was once at a high percentage of 75% a few years earlier. 4. The Dionysos Marble Quarry This quarry lies on the Penteli Mountain in the town and municipality of Dionysos, Attica in Greece. It’s here that the world famous Dionysos pentelicon marble is extracted. The quarry has been opened for more than a 100 years and it was back in 1949 that it was owned by the Dionysos Marble Company. The quarry currently has 2 underground sites and 9 above ground sites where the marble is extracted. The marble here is protected by law and is solely used for the Acropolis Restoration Project and other ancient buildings in Athens. 3. The Udachnaya Pipe The name of this open-pit mine literally translates to lucky pipe and can be found right outside of the Arctic Circle in Sakha Republic, Russia. This mine was discovered way back in June of 1955 and is believed to contain around 225.8 million carats of diamonds with an estimated 10.4 million carats harvested annually. The diamond mine was taken over by the Russian diamond company Alrosa back in 2010. This is mine also happens to be the third deepest open-pit mine in the world at a depth of 1,970 feet. 2. The Mir Mine Occasionally called the Mirny Mine, this was once a former open-pit diamond mine that is located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. This mine reaches a depth of 1,722 feet deep, along with a diameter of 3,900 feet making it one of the largest excavated holes to ever exist. The mine was first discovered back in June of 1955 by a group of three Soviet geologists. It proved to be rather difficult as it seemed like there was always one problem arising after another. The cold winter months provided harsh conditions that slowed production, the mine suffered a flood in the 90’s, and surface operations would cease in June of 2001 with underground operations still moving forward until the whole mine was permanently shut down in 2004. 1. The Bingham Canyon Mine Known by the locals at the Kennecott Copper Mine, the Bingham Canyon Mine is located in the southwest region of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. This massive chasm is known for being the largest man-made excavation in all of the world. Owned by the Rio Tinto Group, the production of this mine was started an astonishing 110-years ago and since then the mine measures at being 2.5 miles long, 0.6 miles deep, and covers a distance of 1,900 acres. The mine endured a tremendous landslide back in 2013 and then a smaller one later that same year.

Mine Cristal, mining quartz crystals

08:02
www.minecristal.ca Stay informed about our new videos: subscribe to our YouTube channel "Mine Cristal". This mine is located in Bonsecours, Quebec, Canada. Photos and video clips shown here date from 1989 - 2012. The open-pit mine produces splendid quartz crystals with exceptional clarity. The largest single crystals measure 60 cm (24 inches) in length. Since mining began in 1989, 32 types, or morphologies of quartz crystals have been catalogued. Geological research into the origins of these crystals has revealed that they formed at this location some 300 million years ago under extreme conditions of heat and pressure. We harvest crystals in the mine only as needed, to supply our store with a sufficient quantity of quartz crystals. Exceptionally (for a mine), we harvest all the crystals by hand and without the use of dynamite. It is a privilege for us to participate in the discovery and extraction of these true gems of nature. The extraction process is done in a manner which respects both the environment and the crystals: we endeavor to keep the crystals whole and in a pristine state. In the museum and the store, our crystals are presented in an untouched, natural state. Amazingly, each crystal is an intricate work of art made by Nature; no two are alike and this makes them even more fascinating! Mine Cristal is considered by experts to be a “geological gem,” one of Canada’s great natural sites, due to it’s unique and abundant mineralogical deposits.

12 Most Radioactive Places on Earth

08:17
These are the top most most dangerous radiation hot spots in the world from nuclear weapons testing to power plant explosions! Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 6. Fort D’Aubervilliers Originally constructed as fortification to protect Paris from going under attack in 1846, it’s actually now one of the world's most radioactive places. It’s here where some of the first tests on radioactivity were conducted. Frederic and Irene Joliot-Curie both worked with salts of radium-226. People have noticed a large amount of cancer in the area especially in a school near the fort in 2002. High doses or radioactive contamination appeared to be the only plausible explanation and a study in 2006 confirmed the radioactivity. 5. McClure Radioactive Site A company looking to build some houses came across a startling discovery when surveying new land in Ontario Canada. The McClure site was contaminated with high amounts of radium from industrial use and a large amount of the soil as contaminated. They found out later that the plant in the area was put radioactive scrap metal in the ground for experimental purposes. The researchers had wanted to see if the radioactivity would somehow accelerate plant growth. The experiments were obviously unsuccessful but the area remains contaminated to this day. Some people have some crazy theories! 4. McGuire Air Force Base During the Cold War, America was quite eager to have the best nuclear arms of any country in the world. The McGuire Air Force Base was seriously contaminated from weapons grade plutonium in 1960. Located just south of Trenton, this was home to Launch Shelter 204 that stored nuclear, intercontinental ballistic missiles. An unexpected explosion happened in a helium that caused a fire in the nuclear tipped BOMARC missile. The fire burned for about 15 minutes and was extinguished with water. This resulted in radioactive material and water to flow throughout the air force base. Some pieces of debris were found a half mile from the explosion. It could have been much worse considering how close it is to populated areas. The contaminated area stretches an estimated 7 acres and it’s closed off with a barbed wire fence. So don’t even think about coming here! 3. Mailuu-Suu This place is one of the most polluted and radioactive sites in the world. Located in Kyrgyzstan, it’s radiation is derived from the large amount of Uranium ore deposits. Mining operations from 1946 to 1968 left this place severely damaged. They managed to mine nearly 10,000 tons of uranium ore for the Soviet nuclear program. A landslide that took place in 1958 released 6000 cubic meters of material from this mine, leaving radioactive particles all over the place. There’s more than 20000 times the amount of normal radiation at this location. When the mining operations ended, it left many people without jobs. It’s believed that many settlers of this region, put themselves in danger and attempt to sell of the metal to scrap metal dealers. 2.Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Chernobyl and Pripyat were both quickly evacuated after a horrific meltdown took place at the nuclear power plant Reactor number 4 on April 26, 1986. People fled this area so quickly that they left many of their belongings behind. As a result of the meltdown, no one has been allowed to live here due to the high amounts of radiation set off from the explosion. The toxic cloud of particles affected a large part of eastern europe and some material was even found as far away as Switzerland. This photo here depicts what's known as the elephant foot is the reminisce of the black lava firefighters found that oozed directed from the core of the power plant. This is basically molten radioactive lava and certainly not something you want to get close. Stand next to this thing for 300 hundred seconds and you’ll only have two days to live. Although nature has been able to flourish here, mankind certainly won’t be making their way back to this place any time soon. 1.Fukushima Power Plant ` A tsunami that struck the coast of Japan in 2011 after an earth and it’s the worst nuclear power plant disaster since Chernobyl by a longshot. The reactors automatically shut down and the tsunami destroyed the emergency cooling generators causing it to overheat. This lead to not one, not two, but three nuclear meltdowns and the releasing of radioactive material all over the area. It was given the Level 7 classification by the International Nuclear Event Scale. This has lead many people seriously concerned for their health in this area and the eventual number of cancer victims could be through the roof! Radiation hotspots like this one in kashiwa are completely closed from the public. Radioactivity is now found much more often through the entire Pacific ocean and has been causing mutations in plants and animals in many parts of the world.

Creepy Sounds Captured in an Abandoned Mine While Reviewing the ThruNite TN12 Flashlight

14:51
Disturbing, strange sounds. That's exactly what I caught on video while filming and documenting the abandoned Waldeck Mine using the ThruNite TN12 flashlight. The Waldeck Mine is an abandoned gold mine located deep in a forested canyon in the high country. I went there on a stormy night in order to document the mine while reviewing and demonstrating ThruNite's excellent TN12 handheld flashlight. The abandoned mine itself is over 150 years old and still has a lot of awesome yet dangerous timbering in its furthest reaches. There are upper levels in the Waldeck Mine, but I only explored and documented the main haulage tunnel. As mentioned in the video, the ThruNite TN12 flashlight I used exclusively for this demo and review has five light levels. Here are the lumens each light level puts out: FIREFLY MODE: 0.4 lumens LOW MODE: 18 lumens MEDIUM MODE: 175 lumens HIGH MODE: 435 lumens TURBO MODE: 1100 lumens The flashlight runs off of a 3400 mAh 18650 battery. ****SPECIAL COUPON CODE**** If you place an order on ThruNite's direct website only (http://www.thrunite.com/thrunite-tn12-2016-xp-l-v6-max-1100-lumen-flashlight/) between now and December 23rd, 2016, use this coupon code at checkout to receive 20% off your order. Found! Secret Gold Mine and Mining Camp Hidden in the Mountains

05:26
We recently stumbled upon this secret, hidden, abandoned mine and mining camp high up in the mountains. We explored one mine tunnel as well as the surface structures. A shed onsite contained an old vintage Silvertone radio/record player from 1940, a winch, a newspaper from 1957, and other artifacts. Inside the mine, we found more artifacts used by the miners, and we demonstrate in the video how those artifacts were used by the miners long ago.

Most of Earth’s precious and rare metals are locked too far in the crust for us to get at them, and launching them to space is too expensive for us to supply large colonies off Earth or explore far off worlds. How do we get our hands on the planetary resources inside asteroids? Let’s find out! Special thanks to Kelly and Zach Weinersmith for working with us on this video.
