Mining Coltan in the DRC

04:32
Video by MISEREOR. This video filmed at the Fungamwaka mine in the DRC reveals the working conditions of artisanal miners who extract the minerals that enter many daily life products such as laptops, smartphones and other electronic devices. The Fungamwaka mine is an example of a "clean mine", where no rebel groups are present to illegally tax the miners, and child labor is banned. In a sector too often dominated by exploitations and human rights violations, this example demonstrates how the sector could be cleaned up under effective regulation. The costs of doing so cannot simply be passed on mine workers who are struggling to make a decent living, but should be covered by the companies sourcing these minerals along the full supply chain.

At the controls of his excavator, he digs down through ancient layers, hoping to reach the precious bitumen beneath. But when his bucket strikes something hard, he makes a find that’s actually far, far more valuable. On March 21, 2011, Funk was on duty at Millennium Mine, a facility near Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada. Operated by Canadian energy company Suncor, the mine is one of several built to capitalize on the deposits in the Athabasca oil sands. Covering some 54,000 square miles around Fort McMurray, these sands contain bitumen – effectively, extra-heavy oil. The deposits are made of the remains of animals and plants that lived over 100 million years ago. Under steady heat and intense pressure, these remains have been converted into bitumen. But to Funk and his colleagues, the deposits of course bear little resemblance to the incredible creatures they once were. Anyhow, early in the afternoon of that day something spectacular would happen. After spending hours digging for bitumen, the bucket of Funk’s excavator struck something solid under the earth. Then, as he watched, a series of strangely colored objects fell out onto the ground below. Funk therefore grabbed his supervisor, Mike Gratton, and the pair began to investigate what he had found. Picking up one of the lumps, they turned it over to reveal a bizarre pattern. Set into the gray rock was a series of brown circles, arranged neatly in rows. Funk and Gratton had no idea what they were looking at, though. Were the shapes just peculiar pieces of fossilized wood – or could they be something else entirely? The pair quickly realized that they needed to get an expert in to take a look at their discovery, so they duly contacted the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller, Alberta. Opened in 1985, the museum is a hub of research in an area that has seen hundreds of dinosaur fossils discovered over the years. Soon, then, curator Donald Henderson and museum technician Darren Tanke were on a plane headed for Fort McMurray. And when they arrived, they realized that it wasn’t just a pile of strange rocks that Funk had stumbled upon. In fact, it would turn out to be one of the most fascinating dinosaur fossils that they had ever discovered. The process of removing the fossils from Millennium Mine was, though, a long and arduous one. For many hours, the teams from Suncor and the museum worked away until the rock was whittled down to a single 15,000-pound piece. Then they prepared to lift it out of the mine. However, disaster struck. The fossil was too fragile to bear its own weight, and it broke into several pieces in mid-air. So while Henderson and Tanke were desperate to get the dinosaur remains back to the museum, they also didn’t want to damage the amazing find further. Eventually, then, the broken sections were encased in plaster of Paris and transported to Drumheller, some 420 miles away – and fortunately without further incident. Finally safe at the museum, the discovery was handed over to Mark Mitchell, a fossil preparer. And over the next five years Mitchell would spend some 7,000 hours painstakingly preparing the fossil for it to take center stage in a new exhibition. As he worked, meanwhile, researchers were able to take a closer look at the fascinating find. ************************************************************** ►Image credits: Image: Robert Clark/National Geographic https://goo.gl/CU5LnK Image: Beautiful Destruction https://goo.gl/Bht1Em Image: TastyCakes https://goo.gl/pP7uYY Image: Howl Arts Collective https://goo.gl/EJAoGo Image: National Geographic https://goo.gl/N7W6LE Image: Yetiwriter https://goo.gl/RMHEUw Image: Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Image: Royal Tyrrell Museum via MailOnline Image: R Lull https://goo.gl/iQ7aZp mage: Instagram/royaltyrrell https://goo.gl/F5UYCY Image: Facebook/Priti Obhrai-Martin https://goo.gl/AJkA8y Image: Machairo https://goo.gl/xoj2nM ►web: http://watchjojo.com ► SUBSCRIBE US: https://goo.gl/Z4nZcg ► Follow Us On Google Plus: https://goo.gl/JYf9Rr ► Like us Our Facebook Page: https://goo.gl/C5Rv92 ► Follow On Twitter: https://goo.gl/PZ2U1R ►For more articles visit: http://scribol.com ►reference:https://goo.gl/hZYsSA #watchjojo

Brought to you by the experienced Australian FIFO worker Jason Drynan. Connect with Fit4FIFO now: http://instagram.com/fit4fifoaustralia http://facebook.com/fit4fifoaustralia Transcript: - So that's the biggest thing. It was really funny when I first started, a lot of my supervisors would tell the boys. - Good day, and welcome to another episode of Fit4FIFO. - You got it out here to suffer-- - Louis, is that you? - You really need to stay focused. - Who, me? - If you're a little bit weak-minded you can be led astray, and there's a few things that guys can get a little bit led astray on. - Oh, right, in FIFO. Things like what? - It's the-- - Whoa, hang on a second Louis, your episode's already been released, mate, it's Kayla's turn. If our subscribers want to check your episode out they can find it on our channel, mate. So, as I was saying, on this week's episode we have the lovely Kayla, who'll be sharing with us her experience of working as a young lady in the industry. She'll also tell us about another option for those who want to work in the industry but don't want to live in the FIFO camp. So, let's get into it. Kayla, welcome to Fit4FIFO. - Thanks. - Our first girl on the show. - Okay, outside of work now I've just quit the FIFO life they call it. I'm two days in and I'm feeling a little lost because all of a sudden I have all of this time on my hands. And so work life, yeah I'm a jewel trade electrical and instrumentation tech. - So firstly actually, tell us, so, a lot of people in FIFO actually stay in a camp. - Yeah, so I live in Gladstone and APRNG, where I was working, is on Curtis Island, which is just off Gladstone, so I get to do the local roster but I do the four and one. So I have four weeks at work, as a FIFO would, and then have a week off. So it is different, I'm not quite the FIFO worker, but I get to come home every night, but that means I have to travel an hour there and back every day, so my 10 hour shift turns into a 12 hour shift including travel. So you kind of lose any kind of time to do anything around that, so yeah. I get to come home every night so that's the biggest thing, I get to see my family, I get to see Shane, still get to have somewhat of a social life. That's why I went for the four and one roster so I could have that one week off to kind of get things done. - It's quite typical for a lot of these big jobs to have the option of living in the nearest town or city or living in camp. - Yeah, Darwin has. Darwin is. So they do offer that to people and working with the guys they do struggle being away from their families. Everyone starts off positive and after that six months or so, you start seeing people deteriorate, and really starting to get to them that they're not seeing their families. So it is a really good option, and I'm glad I've been able to do it. - It is because we can come home, or now talking to him on the phone, and say "How was your day, what did you do?" and actually get to talk about it and get in-depth. And I understand what he does throughout his day and he knows what I do with mine. So it makes it easier because it gives a bit more of a conversation now that he is working away it's not just a "Oh, how was your day?" "Good." "What'd you do?" - Yeah you can actually understand, that's cool. So you're an instrumentation tech slash electrician. How would someone who's straight out of school, what would their best route be to get into your position? - What I would do first, when I was in school, I did three months worth of work experience. This isn't what I wanted to be originally, I wanted to do drafting and architecture. But when I did work experience and actually hated it, I hated just sitting there inside all day, and my mom actually said "Why don't you try this?" Tafe they offer a lot of courses to do, like the theory side, so I was doing that as well as doing work experience and that's how I found out I love the trade. So if you get onto Tafe they offer the external courses after school, and do some work experience and find you like it. So yeah that's a really good way to start and obviously just applying everywhere. Gladstone is a pretty, I'm pretty lucky, we've got six major industries here in Gladstone.

Based in Reno, Nevada, The Western Mining Alliance is defending the rights of over 55,000 claim holders across the West. Our objective is simple, to restore our Constitutional rights to mine and to present science based evidence on the truth about mining. The attacks on mining and suction dredging across the West are not based on science. Rather they are the emotional arguments of extremist environmental groups who, with their shrill cries that the sky is falling manipulate the legislative and legal process resulting in a continuous stream of taxpayer funded lawsuits. Suction dredging is the single most environmentally responsible method of gold mining yet invented. In the forty years it has been ongoing suction dredgers have removed from the watersheds over 2.5 metric tons of mercury. This estimate is based on a California Department of Fish and Game survey (the only survey) of suction dredgers. In addition to mercury the suction dredge miners have removed uncounted tons of lead and iron from the waterways. A suction dredge is so efficient at removing heavy metals even the environmental groups are petitioning to use one to remove mercury from Lake Combie. There is one important distinction between the environmental group's efforts and suction gold miners. The environmental groups want to use your money to suction dredge for mercury, while gold miners have been doing it for free. The controversy over suction dredging is a tempest in a teapot. The same groups that have been responsible for the illegal moratorium on suction dredging have also initiated studies on the effects of "wading" in the streams and rivers; they have closed countless roads to horses, ATVs and vehicles; they are working to restrict fishing and hunting, there is no end to their quest to keep you, the taxpayer, out of your own forests. We suction dredgers, and independent miners, are not only environmentally responsible, we are good stewards of the environment and each year we remove tons of garbage from irresponsible hikers, campers and rafters. Unlike the extremists, we don't challenge any other user group's rights to use public lands even though miners are the only user group with a legal right to use public lands and a legal right to access their claims. We, the mining community, are now engaged in nine lawsuits in four States. Each of these lawsuits was initiated by extremist environmental groups with a utopian vision of limiting human interaction with the environment. We will continue to meet each environmental lawsuit with our own, State governments can count on that. We will defend our rights. These environmental group lawsuits have cost the taxpayers millions while resulting in no benefit to the environment. The truth is the only ones benefiting from the lawsuits are the lawyers. Based on an economic analysis by the California Department of Fish and Game it is likely the State of California is currently losing $30 million each year the moratorium is in place in both direct legal costs, loss of tax revenue and loss of wealth. Small miners are the backbone of this country. We built it and we defend it. Support the independent miners by joining the WMA and by making a donation to our legal fund at www.plp1.org. Your support is needed to stop the extremists. If you want to be added to our mailing list please contact Miner Rick at MinerRick at theminingalliance.com. If you are a company that would like to contribute to the WMA, or our legal fund you can write to Miner Rick or you can use our Paypal button. Our legal effort is supported by the 501(c)3 group -- Public Lands for the People. You can donate to PLP at www.plp1.org. Molon Labe

Plant & Machinery Operations

03:24
The skills required for Plant and Machinery Operations occupations in the minerals and energy industry are usually gained by experience in other related positions or through training programs conducted by individual companies, training providers or courses at TAFEWA. The mines Safety and Inspections Regulations of 1995, which govern the mining industry in Western Australia, require an individual to be 18 years of age to be employed in an underground mine. Also a number of occupations require a current license: for example, a truck driver must hold the appropriate license. The operation of individual plant and machinery items requires appropriate certification, provided as on-the-job training. This equips operators with a range of skills and opportunities to develop a career pathway into positions reflecting skill, experience, leadership and responsibility.
