euronews futuris - New life for old metal mines

09:01
http://www.euronews.com/ The European Union imports huge amounts of metal. Yet buried deep in Europe's bowels is a treasure trove of copper, zinc and other precious metals.   Researchers have been digging deep to uncover ways to put European mining back on the map and they're not short of ideas.   Europe's deepest metal mine is seemingly unfathomable, at 1,430 meters.   For forty years, Pyhäsalmi mine has been a rich source of copper, zinc and pyrites.   However the countdown to its closure has already begun as Pihlaja, a Mining Engineer, at Pyhäsalmi mine explains:   "We currently produce around 1,4 million tons of ore per year but if the metal prices stay at the current level, we won't be able to maintain the mine beyond the end of 2018".   Metal mining throughout Europe is facing similar problems but scientists are becoming a regular fixture at the Pyhäsalmi Mine in an attempt to breath new life into an old industry.   Juha Kaija, a Finnish Geologist talks about his research:   "Metal resources exist in Europe but extracting them is socially and economically challenging. Our research aims to develop more efficient exploration methods and also at imagining new ways to re-use mining waste materials to give European metal mining a fresh new impetus".   Finding new ores in active or abandoned metal mines is the researchers´first aim and that is no mean feat, especially for old, deep deposits.   Timo Mäki, Chief Geologist, at Pyhäsalmi mine describes the difficulties:   "Here in Finland and also in Sweden, the bedrock is very old, 2 billion years, or even older. So the rocks have been folded, folded again, faulted, moved. So something (the ore) that you expect to have there might have been moved somewhere else. Following the geological structures, the rock types at depths of 2 kilometers is very difficult.     That is why researchers have developed sophisticated 3D models. They are aimed at helping to better understand the complex geology that envelopes the ore.   Marcello Imaña Osorio, a Geologist at Pyhäsalmi Mine explains:   "What you see here in red are what we call "reflective zones", underground regions whose material has a different density from the surrounding bedrock. That different density is one of the properties of the ore we are looking for. So these 3D maps help us to precisely spot those regions and calculate angles and distances for more accurate exploration drilling".   However, researchers have even bolder ideas to bring the luster back to metal mining and they are more than happy to share them in open forums.   Swedish geologists have introduced sophisticated 3D underground mapping, to make drilling easier.   Pär Weihed, Geologist, from the University of Lulea talks about the benefits of this new technological development:   "Diamond drilling is a very expensive business. So if you can get more robust computer models, so you need to drill less holes in order to target the mineral spots, then you will reduce the expenses needed to drill those deep holes. What we can describe in a 3D model like this is the rocks units, structures which could be important for guiding where ores are located in the crust. So it is all about chemical and physical properties of the rocks".   French researchers meanwhile, have shown the first ever interactive online database, detailing the metal resources deep underground in Europe.   Daniel Cassard, Geologist at BRGM talks about how even waste can be re-used:   "Each enlargement is represented by just over 40 fields in a database. So it's described in extreme detail: its type, geological formation but also the production, reserve, and resource levels too. Then it does the same for mine waste. Why waste? Well because the waste can contain substances that were rejected at the time, because no one knew what to do with it or didn't have the technology to extract anything valuable and now we realise that waste can be used for the components of your mobile for example.   "Therefore these so-called European wide critical substances - some say they're strategic, others call them green metal 'because they reduce the consummation of energy ".   Scientists have developed a method to transform iron-rich mineral waste into materials for construction and painting.   Eberhard Janneck, Chemist, G.E.O.S explains:   "In this bottle I have a typical example of mining shaft water, full with acids and sulfates. The only creatures that can live in this environment are bacteria that are able to oxidise iron.   Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Tabubil and Ok Tedi copper and gold mine, Star Mountains, travel in Papua New Guinea

01:09
Tabubil is a planned, company operated township located in the Star Mountains area of the North Fly District of Western Province, Papua New Guinea.[2] The town, including the adjoining relocated village of Wangabin and the industrial area of Laydown (where industrial equipment was originally laid down before being installed at the mine ~1970–1980), is the largest settlement in the province,[3] although the provincial capital, Daru is a similar size.[4] It had a recorded population of 10,270 at the 2011 census.[1] Tabubil is set in extremely dense jungle fed by one of the highest rainfalls in the world. The town is the largest settlement in the country that has never been a provincial capital, or incorporated within one. The town was established primarily to serve the mine of Ok Tedi, which is currently mining copper and gold. Tabubil itself is situated amongst dense jungle on a plateau, beside a steep escarpment leading down to the Ok Tedi River in the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea. The township is very remote and is only accessible via air, or river barge followed by road. Peru: Illegal Gold Miners Cause Deforestation in the Amazon

08:43
Learn more: http://pulitzercenter.org/projects/peru-gold-mining-deforestation-environment-health-risks-poverty In collaboration with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, special correspondent Steve Sapienza reports on illegal gold mining in southeastern Peru, where one of the world's richest ecosystems is being mutilated by illegal gold miners. Deemed fortune hunters, illegal gold miners increasingly prey on the resources of the Madre De Dios region, transforming Peru's rainforests into mining towns and extending the problem deeper into the Amazon. Close to 30,000 people tied to illegal gold mining activity now call the region in Peru home. Specifically in the region's capital, Puerto Maldonado, and a nearby town, La Pampa, deforestation caused by illegal gold miners is on the rise, and with police efforts to halt the illegal gold mining proving futile, the destruction of Peru continues. The owners of farm and forestry concessions in Peru face a daily threat of invasion by illegal gold miners who claim to have mining rights to the land. The resulting illegal mining fosters criminal activities and destroys the natural resources of the region. Once illegal gold miners relocate, the land remains a barren desert of sand pits--a destroyed ecosystem carved out by deforestation. This report is part of the Pulitzer Center sponsored project "Peru's Gold Rush: Wealth and Woes" (http://bit.ly/yaU3Xb).

🇿🇦 Gold found in South Africa mine's waste | Al Jazeera English

01:41
In a single gold mine in South Africa, an expected $2.2 billion worth of gold can still be extracted from just one dump site's waste material. Using water cannons and chemical treatements, a single mine can hope to extract about 3 grams in every tonne. It may not sound like much but if there is 140 million tonnes of waste lying around - the numbers start adding up. High prices means all the effort that goes into sourcing the precious metal may well be worth it. Animals Found FROZEN In Ice!

10:13
Check out these animals found frozen in ice! This top 10 list of amazing animals discoveries has some ancient animals that were frozen in time for eternity! 10. The Yuka Mammoth The Yuka mammoth is one of the most well known and scientifically valuable animals that have ever been found. It was discovered in 2010 within the Siberian permafrost on the coast of the Laptev Sea in Russia. The most unusual thing about this 39,000-year-old mammoth was that it was mummified, and had the most in-tact mammoth brain ever found, with folds and blood vessels still visible. Finding specimens like this is incredibly helpful to understanding the species. Studies of the brain showed it to be very similar to modern day elephants, and also led to researchers to developing better ways of storing mammoths in the future when new ones are found. Along with the Yuka mammoth, a number of other ones have been found in the region, although not in as good condition, and have been highly sought after by researchers for a different purpose. Because of their relatively intact DNA, and their status as an intriguing extinct animal that is very similar to some that exist today, the mammoth is a great candidate for bringing a species back from extinction using cutting edge technology. It is believed that with a bit of luck and perseverance, we might once again see these giants alive and well, and maybe within just a few years! I would definitely love to see that! 9. Moose It’s rare enough to find an animal preserved in ice, but rarer still is the apparent freezing of two animals when they’re interacting with each other. Well this is what a couple of hikers found in Alaska in 2016. Beneath 8 inches of ice was the stunning sight of two moose fighting each other, clearly so engrossed in their tussle that they failed to notice the approaching frost. In the fall, males tend to be more aggressive towards each other, likely due to territorial disputes or to gain the attention of a female, and at some point these two managed to get their antlers tangled. They probably drowned in the cold water before being frozen over as temperatures fell. Soon after their discovery, the moose were removed from the ice by local enthusiasts who wanted to preserve the unusual find forever. 8. Fish As a fish living in water, ice can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s the unique property of ice floating on top of water that helps to insulate warmth and allow fish to survive falling temperatures, but they aren’t always so lucky. In 2014, a sharp cold eastern wind sent temperatures plummeting very quickly around the island of Lovund in Norway, and instantly froze parts of the ocean. Unfortunately for a large shoal of fish, thought to be attempting to escape a predator at the time, there was no chance to avoid the approaching ice, and they were frozen in place. The ice sheet was so thick that it was perfectly safe for people to walk across, and capture these amazing images of thousands of fish frozen in time. This event had a major impact on the local ecosystem, because birds were unable to find any food, so the skies were strangely silent until the ice finally thawed. 7. Yukagir Bison Siberia is one of the coldest places on earth that has been regularly inhabited for millennia. This makes it the perfect place to find frozen animals like the Yuka mammoth, and close by there was another discovery in 2011, the mummified remains of a Steppe Bison- the ancestor to the modern bison. Discovered by a tribe in the Yana-Indigirka Lowland, the bison was remarkably intact, with its brain and other organs almost perfectly preserved. This is the most complete Steppe Bison ever to be found, and has allowed researchers to extensively study its brain, heart, digestive system and blood vessels, despite it being well over 9000 years old. With no visible signs of injury, it is thought that the lack of body fat around its abdomen is a clue as to how it died. Most likely from starvation as a result of the rapidly changing environment in the area at the time. 6. Selerikan Pony In 1968, gold miners digging tunnels, about 30 feet below the surface of the Indigirka River in Siberia, found something surprising- two legs and a tail of a pony sticking through the roof of one of their tunnels. Experts were called in from the Zoological institute of St. Petersburg to help recover the full animal, which they managed to do, apart from its head. The body turned out to be of a Przewalski (prez walski) Horse, that nowadays is only found in Mongolia, and amazingly this one appeared to have died about 35,000 years ago. Analysis of the remains suggested that the horses lived relatively similar then to how they still do today. Rare Earthenware - Unknown Fields - 4K Trailer

02:01
While journeys to extraordinary places are the cornerstone of luxury travel, this project follows more well-concealed journeys taking place across global supply chains. It retraces rare earth elements, which are widely used in high end electronics and green technologies, to their origins. The film, developed with photographer Toby Smith, documents their voyage from container ships and ports, wholesalers and factories, back to the banks of a barely-liquid radioactive lake in Inner Mongolia, where the refining process takes place. Unknown Fields Division, in collaboration with Kevin Callaghan, have used mud from this lake to craft a set of three ceramic vessels. Each is sized in relation to the amount of waste created in the production of three items of technology – a smartphone, a featherweight laptop and the cell of a smart car battery. The resulting film and 3 vases will be on display at the V and A from the 25th of April. For press, broadcast or commercial enquiries please contact: [email protected] [email protected] For more information please visit: www.unknownfieldsdivision.com www.tobysmith.com What is Luxury? - The V&A 25 April – 27 September 2015 What is Luxury? will interrogate ideas of luxury today. It will address how luxury is made and understood in a physical, conceptual and cultural capacity. Extraordinary works of craftsmanship will be on display including a couture gown by fashion designer Iris van Herpen and fine examples of haute horlogerie by British watchmaker George Daniels, alongside more unexpected projects which explore the cultural value of materials such as gold, diamonds and plastic. The future of luxury will be explored, asking questions about the role that time, space, privacy, well-being, social inclusivity and access to resources and skill may play in determining our choices and aspirations. Rare Earth Minerals Turn Villages to Ruins

04:09
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews Baotou, Inner Mongolia is China's largest rare earth mineral production base. Although it is a precious mineral resource, rare earth imposes great dangers of pollution. Recently, French media reported from Baotou. Entitled "In China, rare earths are killing villages", the report highlighted massive environmental pollution. It revealed the impact of the production of rare earth minerals on local residents, animals and land. The following is our report. French media 'Le Monde' reported from Baotou, stating that by aerial viewpoint, it looks like a large lake, fed by numerous tributaries. On site, it is actually an opaque discharge covering an area of 10 km2. Surrounding the industrial plants producing 17 minerals are reject waste waters loaded with chemicals. There are no fish or algae The Le Monde article introduced that rock from Bayan obo rare earth ore mine, located 120 kilometers away, are sent here for treatment. The concentration of rare earth in the rocks is very low and must be separated and purified by hydrometallurgical processes and acid baths. In the effluent basin are exist all sorts of toxic chemicals and radioactive elements such as thorium. Ingestion of these toxins causes cancer of the pancreas, lung and blood. A pungent odor exudes within radius of 10 miles. Local villagers have been suffering from cancer. Rows of brown houses in the village have been reduced to rubble. Sichuan environmentalist Chen Yunfei indicates that rare earth refining process causes great environmental pollution and destruction. People are unaware of the specific dangers of this project, and the specialists involved in the decision-making. Chen Yunfei: "Some officials only work on the image projects for profit. They relocate once the money has been made. Some officials collude with the business, caring about nothing but profit, leaving the mess for the public." According to local residents, Baotou used to be a vast grassland. In 1958 the state enterprise Baotou Iron and Steel Company began producing rare earth production. By the end of 1980, locals found that the plant was in trouble. Last year, China Environment News reported that Baotou Iron and Steel Group's tailing dam leakage has caused damage to five surrounding villages. It has affected more than 3000 farmers, and ruined more than 3,295 Acres of farmland. Ma Peng, former Director of the Baotou Rare Earth Research Institute, indicated that due to the lack of a barrier below the tailing dam, the mining waste is directly discharging into the Yellow River. The discharge is at a rate of 300m per year. The residents also said that further pollution has been caused by other industries and thermal power plants. These industries followed rare earth production by the Baotou Iron and Steel Company. Local residents have to breathe air saturated with sulfuric acid and coal dust. Coal dust is airbourne around the houses. Cows, horses, chickens and goats are being killed by these poisons. The locals have fled, and Xinguang Sancun village has now decreased from 2000 villagers to 300. Every family is hit with illness. After 20 years of complaints to the local government, the villagers have finally won promises of financial compensation. These have only been partially fulfilled. Miss Hao, a resident of Baotou: "We all know. The government is too dark. No one cares about the people, whether they live or die, not to mention the pollution." For many years, there have been calls for attention for the issue of Baotou tailing dam discharging thorium radiation to Baotou and into the Yellow River. The hazards and pollution caused by the Baotou tailing dam have never been effectively alleviated. Environmentalist Chen Yunfei: "This is an investment that has hurt several generations. It has polluted the whole environment. This high cost investment ought to be condemned. Our future generations are going to suffer for it." China Environment News indicated that Baotou is located in the stratum fracture zone. In the event of a major earthquake or large-scale rainfall, the rupture of the tailing dam will threaten the surrounding five villages, as well as tens of thousands of lives of the Baotou Iron and Steel workers. If the tailings flow into the Yellow River, it will cause serious pollution to the river. 《神韵》2011世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/

Columbus, de Gama, and Zheng He! 15th Century Mariners. Crash Course: World History #21

10:38
In which John Green teaches you about the beginning of the so-called Age of Discovery. You've probably heard of Christopher Columbus, who "discovered" America in 1492, but what about Vasco da Gama? How about Zheng He? Columbus gets a bad rap from many modern historians, but it turns out he was pretty important as far as the history of the world goes. That said, he wasn't the only pioneer plying the seas in the 1400s. In Portugal, Vasco da Gama was busy integrating Europe into the Indian Ocean Trade by sailing around Africa. Chinese admiral Zheng He was also traveling far and wide in the largest wooden ships ever built. Columbus, whether portrayed as hero or villain, is usually credited as the great sailor of the 15th century, but he definitely wasn't the only contender. What better way to settle this question than with a knock-down, drag-out, no holds barred, old-fashioned battle royal? We were going to make it a cage match, but welding is EXPENSIVE. It is crucial to understand that the on-heading treatment and administration of chronic conditions in Mongolia can be extremely high-priced as this kind of plans offering this coverage are normally far more costly.

Redefining the search space for minerals

11:59
This presentation describes the misalignment between the current mineral industry practice and the future mineral and resource needs of society. Meeting these needs will requiring a fundamental shift how the mineral industry does their exploration targeting. Exploration will need to shift from looking at longer life but increasingly lower grade and high energy consumption brownfield deposits to seeking higher quality greenfield deposits. Finding new mineral districts, particularly those in areas of challenging cover, will require innovations in both technology and understanding mineral systems on a greater scale. Presented by Prof. Campbell McCuaig, Director of the Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) at the University of Western Australia.

India in talks with countries like Uzbekistan to create strategic u reserve

04:13
India is engaging with various countries, including Uzbekistan, to procure nuclear fuel as part of its plan to create a strategic uranium reserve to ensure long-term security. The plan is to have a stockpile of nuclear fuel for its strategic uranium reserve that can sustain the country’s reactors for the next five years so that they do not stop functioning because of the lack of uranium. In the past, the Indian power reactors were under- performing due to shortage of uranium, owing to the sanctions imposed by the West post 1974 Pokhran nuclear tests. Talks are currently being held with Uzbekistan, a senior government official said, and a delegation from the Central Asian country had visited India last month to discuss the issue in detail. The delegation came just two months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Uzbek president Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Astana in June this year, said a senior Ministry of External Affairs official, on condition of anonymity. “We have been looking to import uranium from Uzbekistan in the past. Back then, they had refused to transport uranium to an Indian port. But now they have agreed to do so and negotiations are on,” said a senior government official requesting anonymity. According to the World Nuclear Association, an international organisation that represents the global nuclear industry, the landlocked Central Asian country is the seventh largest exporter of uranium in the world. Attempts are also being made to procure uranium from Australia. A nuclear cooperation pact between the two nations was signed in 2014 and came into force in 2015. Uranium mining in Australia is mostly done by private players. However, a senior government official pointed out that Australian uranium is “impure” in nature. “We have got nearly a kilogramme of uranium from Australia. This is being tested by the Nuclear Fuel Complex, Hyderabad to determine the price of the uranium. We are hopeful that the uranium import starts by next year,” the official added. India’s concerns to have a stockpile of nuclear fuel emanate from the time when its atomic reactors functioned below its capacity level due to the shortage of uranium. The US and other nations had imposed sanctions on India following the Pokhran nuclear tests in 1974. Post Indo-US nuclear cooperation agreement, New Delhi’s quest to have an uranium reserve got traction as importing fuel became much easier. Apart from domestic production, India currently imports uranium from Kazakhstan and Canada. This is primarily used to fuel its indigenously built Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors. It procures enriched uranium from Russia for its two Boiling Water Reactors at Tarapur in Maharashtra. As part of its contract, Russia also supplies uranium to fuel the two reactors at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu. Apart from it, it has agreements in place to import uranium from Namibia and Mongolia. The government recently approved 10 Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors with a capacity to generate 7000 MW. Work on four reactors with a capacity of 1000 MW each is in progress, apart from seven domestic reactors. “We will now have 21 reactors under construction and 22 reactors in operation. This will increase the capacity to over 22,000 MWe by the end of next decade. We shall continue to add more capacity in future,” Sekhar Basu, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) secretary and chairman of the Atomic Energy said at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) general conference at Vienna last week. Poseidon: China's Secret Salvage of Britain's Lost Submarine by Steven R. Schwankert

04:25
Royal Navy submarine HMS Poseidon sank in collision with a freighter during routine exercises in 1931 off the Chinese coast. Thirty of its fifty-six-man crew scrambled out of the hatches as it went down. Of the twenty-six who remained inside, eight attempted to surface using an early form of diving equipment: five of them made it safely to the surface in the first escape of this kind in submarine history and became heroes. The incident was then forgotten, eclipsed by the greater drama that followed in World War II, until news emerged that, for obscure reasons, the Chinese government had salvaged the wrecked submarine in 1972. This lively account of the Poseidon incident tells the story of the accident and its aftermath, and of the author's own quest to discover the shipwreck and its hidden history. Steven R. Schwankert is an editor and award-winning reporter with seventeen years of experience in Greater China. He is the Asia chapter chair of The Explorers Club, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and founder of SinoScuba, Beijing's first professional scuba-diving operator. In 2007, he led the first ever scientific expedition to dive Mongolia's Lake Khovsgol. He regularly guides divers to the Underwater Great Wall and a Ming-dynasty city that lies beneath a lake in China's Zhejiang Province. "Schwankert's tale of a lost submarine, its discovery and secret salvage by the Chinese is a compelling, real-life exposé. Exciting, suspenseful, filled with intrigue, Poseidon is a must-read to set lost history on the track to truth." —Clive Cussler, author of Raise the Titanic and Poseidon's Arrow "Poseidon is an excellent account of a fascinating episode in naval history. I highly recommend this superb book." —Alex Kershaw, author of Escape from the Deep and The Liberator "Poseidon is the gripping story of the dramatic final moments of a British submarine—the survivors' compelling story and the awful fate of those trapped inside. But Poseidon is also the story of Schwankert's dogged quest and maritime detective work to uncover the truth on that dreadful day in Royal Navy history." —Paul French, author of Midnight in Peking Order the hardcover edition today from the Hong Kong University Press online store [www.tinyurl.com/poseidonhkup], on Kindle [www.tinyurl.com/poseidonbook], or from the Google Play Store [www.tinyurl.com/poseidongp].

Finding The Prize: A story of oil exploration and discovery.

20:46
In the past, prospectors used to drill anywhere they imagined oil might be hidden. Today's geoscientists can pinpoint where to drill on a basin hundreds of kilometres wide with much greater chance of success. This is the story of the exploration teams at Tullow Oil: The story of how the geologists, engineers and economists start with a blank sheet of paper... gather evidence for their ideas... and evaluate the size of the prize.

MoonFaker: Moon Rocks Revisited. Episode 10, SMART-1 & Lunar Minerals Different to Apollo. PART 4

14:00
JARRAH WHITE DOES NOT CLAIM CALCIUM IS A MINERAL. Now that that's out the way. Perhaps the most revealing evidence that the Apollo moon rocks are fake, is the fact that when the SMART-1 space probe crashed into the Lake of Excellence in 2006 a mismatch was found between Apollo samples and the real thing. ABC News reported: "By punching a 10 meter hole in the moon's surface, the probe has uncovered minerals different to the rocks gathered on the surface during moonwalks." The propagandists who have the guts to even mention this are desperate. Some have claimed that the lunar material collected below ground is supposed to be different. This claim is easily disproved just by looking at the deep drill core data from the later Apollo flights, which supposedly took drilling equipment to the moon. More recently, Phil Webb has produced an extremely convoluted response and gone for volume to muddy the waters. First by twisting the reporter's words, substituting "different minerals" with "new minerals", implying that the SMART-1 merely discovered new minerals in addition to those in Apollo rocks. He is clearly distorting the quote's intended meaning. "Different minerals" generally means "different mineralogy". Webb then claims the reporter made up the story about different minerals to sound more sensational. Then he alleges that they lifted a piece from one of their earlier articles on the discovery of lunar meteorite mineral "hapkeite", and attributed it to SMART-1. Then he claims he claims scientists *expect* to find different minerals. Which is it? All of these claims warrant thorough responses. In regard to scientists expecting it, Webb knows this is false. Firstly, SMART-1 crashed in the lunar maria. And the Apollo samples supposedly collected from the various maria regions are generally the same in chemistry and mineralogy. Secondly, Webb went out of his way to copy and paste stuff from Randy L. Korotev's website at least once per video. Yet strangely he seemed to have missed this particular quote: "As noted above, there are known exceptions to the generalizations, and we lunatics certainly hope that we haven't discovered all the minerals and rock types that occur on the Moon. However, known samples of unusual composition and mineralogy are rare and usually occur only as small (less than 1 gram) clasts in breccias or in the soil. We have no reason to suspect, based on data obtained from orbit on the Clementine and Lunar Prospector missions, that any region of the Moon is rich in types of rocks significantly different from those we know about or postulate might exist. Most ore-forming processes on Earth involve water, so we would not expect any hidden ore deposits on the Moon. Keep in mind that if more than 40 lunar meteorites have been blasted off the Moon and found on Earth, then at any given point on the lunar surface there can be rocks from any other point. For this reason, the fact that the lunar surface was "poorly sampled" by the Apollo and Luna missions is in itself not a good reason to suspect that rocks vastly different from those that we have studied exist at unsampled points on the Moon. Tens of thousands of lunar rocks and rocklets have been studied since the Apollo missions. It is highly unlikely that any yet-unfound lunar meteorite will differ substantially in the minerals it contains or in its geochemical character from the Apollo lunar rocks." Gee, I wonder how he could have missed that! Not to mention the fact that in his previous video, he cited data from NASA's Clementine as evidence for Apollo. Yet ignored its data that indicates the lunar geology is supposedly the same as the Apollo rocks all round. Through strained cherry picking, quote-mining and word games, Webb proceeds to allege that SMART-1's D-CIXS experiment remotely verified the chemistry and mineralogy of the Apollo samples. Reading the cited articles in context indicates the exact opposite. He then creates the mother of all strawman arguments. Phil Webb has cut and pasted out of context clips from MoonFaker Exhibit D to falsely claim I said that calcium was the "new mineral" discovered during the SMART-1 impact. All I said was that SMART-1's D-CIXS remotely verified the CHEMISTRY of the Soviet moon samples as far as calcium goes. One would think if the Apollo and Soviet Luna samples were identical, as Phil Plait claimed, the remote detection of calcium would apply to all sample return missions, not just the Russian flights. Be sure to see Part 6 of this series for my debunking of Webb's strawman of epic proportions. Also discussed in this video is the minerals Hapkeite, Fercilicite and Ferdicilicite, which were discovered in lunar meteorite Dhofar 280 by Anand et al. It is believed that these minerals, particularly Hapkeite, are quite common to the lunar soil. Yet they have never been found in Apollo samples. It could also be pointed out that Dhofar 280 is chemically different to the Apollo rocks.

The Siberian city of Khanty Mansiysk has become extremely rich thanks to oil. In some parts of Russia, villages are emptying because residents seek better prospects, like the ones happening in Khanty Mansiysk. Jelle visits such a village. Original title: Siberische belofte What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a "young democracy" (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a "sovereign democracy" (according to Putin) or a "fascist regime" (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia. China's Rare Earth Production Suspension Raises International Concerns

04:09
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews Rare earth minerals are crucial in manufacturing many modern technological products. Currently, China produces 95% of the world's rare earth minerals. In recent months, the price of rare earths dropped by around 20%. To raise the market price, the largest two rare earth producers in China have announced the suspension of production, which caused dissatisfaction in many countries. The former leader of the CCP government, Deng Xiaoping, said in 1992, "China could produce rare earth minerals, just as the Middle East produces oil." Following his words, China has since quickly developed its rare earth production. However, the recent rare earth industry recession has caused many Chinese producers to halt business. On Oct 19th, the largest rare earth producer in China, Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare-Earth (Group), announced it would suspend production for one month. Following Oct 25th, another rare earth giant in southern China, Minerals Ganzhou Rare Earth, also announced suspension of production for 3 to 5 months. The UK-based newspaper, Financial Times, wrote an article stating that the CCP government's regulation of rare earth production, has caused turbulence in the global rare earth market. The VOA Chinese website reported on Oct 26th that many countries are trying to countermeasure China's control over rare earth materials. For example, Toyota and General Motors are carrying out research on reduction of rare earth elements usage as much as possible, and The United States, Russia and Australia are planning to develop alternative rare earth mines. Andrew Bloodworth, Head of Science Minerals & Waste at British Geological Survey stated, "For a long time, Chinese companies have separated rare earth elements from minerals at a relatively low cost. This continuously reduces the price for Chinese rare earth producers, resulting in the widespread closure of foreign producers. On the other hand, the market demand is also increasing, since rare earths are necessary in making more and more high-tech products." Bloodworth believes that if as few as two new mines outside China could be developed, the current dependence on Chinese rare earth producers would be greatly relaxed. The Wall Street Journal also reported that the Pentagon recently submitted a report to Congress suggesting that the United States should develop rare earth sources outside China. The report reveals that the Pentagon has already begun to research companies which could possibly separate rare earth elements from their oxides. Studies are underway regarding the possible risk of suspension from rare earths sources. Brahma Chellaney, Professor of New Delhi-based Centre for Policy Research, wrote in Financial Times that China regards its monopoly on rare earth materials as a trade weapon, which has played an important role in inhibiting any solution to South China Sea disputes despite multilateral efforts. Similarly, the CCP government also tries to use water resources as a political weapon. Such behavior patterns have worried its neighbors and drawn the awareness of the international society. In 2008, the CCP government once restricted its production of rare earths to control prices in the global market. It also halted rare earth export to Japan when territorial conflicts between two countries broke out in 2010. Clearly, the CCP aims to take advantage of its monopoly on rare earths in politics and foreign affairs. An intriguing fact is that though 83% of Japan's rare earths are imported from China, the government of Japan has deposited these resources in the seabed for future use, rather than deplete supplies immediately. As part of future natural resources strategy planning, these deposits could support 20-year usage in Japan. However, the reserve ratio of rare earths in China has decreased from 43% to 30% between 1997 and 2010. At the current rate, the resources would be depleted in 15 to 20 years. At the same time, the CCP government also encounters domestic resistance when it tries to control the production of rare earth materials. The China Youth Daily reported that since huge benefits are involved in the rare earth industry, the central government will face resistance of rare earth production from local governments.. Local economics usually greatly depend on production of rare earths, especially the export of these materials. Therefore national control of rare earth export would cause direct hazard to local economics and rare earth companies themselves. NTD reporters Song Feng and Xue Li

Alien Body Hoax: The Proof

13:14
This video (in Russian) by Kabansk Info chief editor Valery Novikov proves once and for all that the recent Alien Body find close to Lake Baikal in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia, is a hoax. I discussed this case with Valery after it was reported that he had informed the local police after seeing the original video on You Tube and thinking the alien might in fact be a small child. Upon realising the hoax, Valery interviewed the two boys, Timur Hilall, 18, and Kirill Vlasov, 19 and learned they made the whole thing out of bread crumbs, chicken skin and plasticine for the head! The video is yet to be translated, but the methods they used in creating the "doll" can be seen clearly in the video.
