"A Systems Approach to Data Privacy in the Biomedical Domain" (CRCS Lunch Seminar)

01:10:06
CRCS Privacy and Security Lunch Seminar (Wednesday, May 13, 2009) Speaker: Bradley Malin Title: A Systems Approach to Data Privacy in the Biomedical Domain Abstract: The healthcare community has made considerable strides in the development and deployment of information systems, with particular gains in electronic health records and cheap genome sequencing technologies. Given the recent passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and the HITECH Act in particular, advancement and adoption of such systems is expected to grow at unprecedented rates. The quantity of patient-level data that will be generated is substantial and can enable more cost-effective care as well as support a host of secondary uses, such biomedical research and biosurveillance. At the same time, care must be taken to ensure that such records are accessed and shared without violating a patient's privacy rights. The construction and application of data privacy technologies in the biomedical domain is a complex endeavor and requires the resolution of often competing computational, organizational, regulatory, and scientific needs. In this talk, I will introduce how the Vanderbilt Health Information Privacy Laboratory builds and applies data privacy solutions to support various biomedical settings. Our solutions are rooted in computational formalisms, but are driven by real world requirements and, as such, draw upon various tools and techniques from a number of fields, including cryptography, databases and data mining, public policy, risk analysis, and statistics. Beyond a high-level overview, I will delve into recent research on how we are measuring and mitigating privacy risks when sharing patient-level data from electronic medical and genomic records from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center to local researchers and an emerging de-identified repository at the National Institutes of Health. Bio: Brad Malin is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics in the School of Medicine and an Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University. He is the founder and director of the Vanderbilt Health Information Privacy Laboratory (HIPLab), which focuses on basic and applied research in a number of health-related areas, including primary care and secondary sharing of patient-specific clinical and genomic data. His research has received several awards of distinction from the American and International Medical Informatics Associations and the HIPLab is currently supported by grant funding from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and Veterans Health Administration. For the past several years, he has directed a data privacy research and consultation team for the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) project, a consortium sponsored by the National Human Genome Research Institute. He has served as a program committee member and workshop chair for numerous conferences on data mining, privacy, and medical informatics. He has also edited several volumes for Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science, a special issue for the journal Data and Knowledge Engineering, and is currently on the editorial board of the journal Transactions on Data Privacy. He received a bachelor's in biology (2000), master's in knowledge discovery and data mining (2002), master's in public policy & management (2003), and a doctorate in computation, organizations & society (2006) from the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Latanya Sweeney: When anonymized data is anything but anonymous

36:22
Relatively simple data science experiments can yield major insights and have a significant impact. Many experiments in data science are expensive and time consuming to pursue. But Latanya Sweeney, professor of government and technology at Harvard University, has shown that even relatively simple studies conducted by students can have a significant impact on public policy and society. As a student in the 1990s, Sweeney discovered that by applying a couple of filters to a database containing supposedly anonymized health records of Massachusetts state employees, she was able to identify the medical history of Gov. William Weld. That simple experiment led to a broader conclusion: Most people in the United States are the only ones in their ZIP code with a particular date of birth, which means it is relatively easy to discover their identities in much the same way Sweeney found Weld’s history. “That impact -- the ability to have a simple experiment and have dramatic impact – was huge, and something that stayed with me forever. That simple experiment was quoted in the preamble of HIPAA and the rewrite of privacy laws around the world,” Sweeney said during a talk at this year’s Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference at Stanford University. Over the years, Sweeney and her associates have flagged numerous instances of flaws in public databases that have caused significant harm. And they’ve found instances where data sources have been misused or applied in a discriminatory manner. A query by a reporter prompted Sweeney to look for a correlation between names typically given to African-Americans and online ads mentioning arrest records. She found it. Online searches containing a name that sounds like it belongs to a black person were 80 percent more likely to generate an ad mentioning arrest records than searches for stereotypically white names. “Somebody goes online to see what they can find out about you and Googles your name. And if the ads are popping up implying that you have an arrest record, then in fact, you’re at a disadvantage. It’s not about the intent or whether it was intended,” said Sweeney, who was chief technology officer for the Federal Trade Commission from January 2014 until December 2014. A study by Sweeney’s students found that a major SAT tutoring company charged higher prices to Asians. And Airbnb modified its pricing policies after the students found price discrimination against certain groups. Referring to the examples she gave during her talk, Sweeney said: “I like to think I’m really smart, but the truth is these are really simple experiments. But they have profound impact because they empower someone else to be able to do their job better.”

2009-12-09 CERIAS - Human Factors Approaches to Preserving Privacy

54:30
Recorded: 12/09/2009 CERIAS Security Seminar at Purdue University Human Factors Approaches to Preserving Privacy Kelly Caine, Indiana University Threats to privacy are not only due to traditional computer security issues; human factors issues such as unintentional disclosure of information also have an impact on privacy preservation. In this talk I will discuss two examinations of psychological aspects of privacy and how they relate to technology. First, I will present results from an investigation of everyday privacy behaviors and discuss how these naturally occurring behaviors can guide the design of privacy protective technology. Then, I will introduce the concept of misclosure, which is the unintentional disclosure of information, and provide multiple example misclosures. I will conclude by demonstrating that misclosures a) occur frequently b) occur across systems and c) may be preventable by considering human factors during design. Kelly Caine is a Research Fellow in the School of Informatics and Computer Science at Indiana University. She received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of South Carolina and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research interests include health informatics, privacy, human factors, human computer interaction, and designing for special populations. She is a member of APA, HFES, and the ACM SIGCHI, is an alumnus of the Georgia Tech Human Factors and Aging Lab and the GVU Center, and the Aware Home Initiative, and is a current member of the IU ETHOS group. She is the recipient of a fellowship in Information Technology and International Development, the Foley Scholar award, and the Georgia Tech Presidential Scholarship. Outside of academia, Kelly worked as a User Experience Researcher at Google on a variety of projects including Google Health. (Visit: www.cerias.purude.edu)

David Wilcock | Corey Goode: The Antarctic Atlantis [MUST SEE LIVE DISCLOSURE!]

02:30:07
Are we about to hear that ancient ruins have been found in Antarctica? Is there an Alliance working to defeat the greatest threat humanity has ever faced on earth? Could the Antarctic Atlantis be part of a full or partial disclosure? Join David Wilcock on a thrill ride of discovery, beginning with Part One where he presents data on the Secret Space Program and shares the stage with legendary insider Corey Goode. This is the best public summary David and Corey have done of this amazing story that has captivated the UFO community. Part Two begins at the 53-minute mark, with David connecting the dots between intel from multiple insiders to arrive at a stunning conclusion -- that we are on the verge of major new releases of information that will transform everything we thought we knew about life on earth. A civilization of "Pre-Adamite" giants with elongated skulls appears to have crash-landed on a continent we now call Antarctica some 55,000 years ago. Various groups we collectively call the Alliance are working to defeat the Cabal / Illuminati / New World Order, thus making the headlines crazier by the day. If the Alliance succeeds, their plan is now to begin the disclosure process by telling us there was a civilization in Antarctica. We are already seeing multiple, compelling hints of this in corporate media. Find out what the insiders are telling us and help spread the word! This is a two-and-a-half-hour excerpt from David's Friday and Saturday presentations at the Conscious Life Expo 2017. In their original form they run six hours. David also spoke for three hours on Monday, presenting an incredible new model of the Cosmos based on sacred geometry -- and proving that the Sun is going to release a DNA-transforming burst of energy in our near future. Efficient Clue-based Route Search on Road Networks

26:21
Efficient Clue-based Route Search on Road Networks Abstract: With the advances in geo-positioning technologies and location-based services, it is nowadays quite common for road networks to have textual contents on the vertices. Previous work on identifying an optimal route that covers a sequence of query keywords has been studied in recent years. However, in many practical scenarios, an optimal route might not always be desirable. For example, a personalized route query is issued by providing some clues that describe the spatial context between PoIs along the route, where the result can be far from the optimal one. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the problem of clue-based route search (CRS), which allows a user to provide clues on keywords and spatial relationships. First, we propose a greedy algorithm and a dynamic programming algorithm as baselines. To improve efficiency, we develop a branch-and-bound algorithm that prunes unnecessary vertices in query processing. In order to quickly locate candidate, we propose an AB-tree that stores both the distance and keyword information in tree structure. To further reduce the index size, we construct a PB-tree by utilizing the virtue of 2-hop label index to pinpoint the candidate. Extensive experiments are conducted and verify the superiority of our algorithms and index structures.

Unfortunately, hackers have realized the potential of using apps for spreading malware and spam. The problem is already significant, as we find that at least 13% of apps in our dataset are malicious. So far, the research community has focused on detecting malicious posts and campaigns. In this paper, we ask the question: Given a Facebook application, can we determine if it is malicious? Our key contribution is in developing FRAppE—Facebook’s Rigorous Application Evaluator—arguably the first tool focused on detecting malicious apps on Facebook. To develop FRAppE, we use information gathered by observing the posting behavior of 111K Facebook apps seen across 2.2 million users on Facebook. First, we identify a set of features that help us distinguish malicious apps from benign ones. For example, we find that malicious apps often share names with other apps, and they typically request fewer permissions than benign apps. Second, leveraging these distinguishing features, we show that FRAppE can detect malicious apps with 99.5% accuracy, with no false positives and a high true positive rate (95.9%). Finally, we explore the ecosystem of malicious Facebook apps and identify mechanisms that these apps use to propagate. Interestingly, we find that many apps collude and support each other; in our dataset, we find 1584 apps enabling the viral propagation of 3723 other apps through their posts. Long term, we see FRAppE as a step toward creating an independent watchdog for app assessment and ranking, so as to warn Facebook users before installing apps.

A Secure Anti-Collusion Data Sharing Scheme for Dynamic Groups in the Cloud

Mobile: (0) 9952649690 , Email: [email protected], web: www.jpinfotech.org Blog: www.jpinfotech.blogspot.com Benefited from cloud computing, users can achieve an effective and economical approach for data sharing among group members in the cloud with the characters of low maintenance and little management cost. Meanwhile, we must provide security guarantees for the sharing data files since they are outsourced. Unfortunately, because of the frequent change of the membership, sharing data while providing privacy-preserving is still a challenging issue, especially for an untrusted cloud due to the collusion attack. Moreover, for existing schemes, the security of key distribution is based on the secure communication channel, however, to have such channel is a strong assumption and is difficult for practice. In this paper, we propose a secure data sharing scheme for dynamic members. Firstly, we propose a secure way for key distribution without any secure communication channels, and the users can securely obtain their private keys from group manager. Secondly, our scheme can achieve fine-grained access control, any user in the group can use the source in the cloud and revoked users cannot access the cloud again after they are revoked. Thirdly, we can protect the scheme from collusion attack, which means that revoked users cannot get the original data file even if they conspire with the untrusted cloud. In our approach, by leveraging polynomial function, we can achieve a secure user revocation scheme. Finally, our scheme can achieve fine efficiency, which means previous users need not to update their private keys for the situation either a new user joins in the group or a user is revoked from the group.

Teri Manolio, M.D., Ph.D. Director, Office of Population Genomics, NHGRI. Genetics for Epidemiologists: Applications of Human Genomics to Population Sciences, was a short course for investigators and trainees in the field of epidemiology and related population-based sciences. It was conducted by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) on May 13-14, 2008 at Northwestern University in Chicago. The goal of Genetics for Epidemiologists (GFE) was to familiarize epidemiologists and population-based researchers with recent developments in the theory and methods of human genetics that might be applied to the study of the distribution, natural history and etiology of diseases in populations. The course consisted of eight one-hour lectures and focused on the interface between genetics and epidemiology. Emphasis was on the application of modern human genome analysis methodologies to studies of human populations through the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of studies which effectively answer the epidemiologic question of interest. GFE is co-sponsored by the Office of Population Genomics, NHGRI, and the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. These videocasts are provided as an educational tool for epidemiologic investigators interested in learning more about applying genomics to their work. More: http://www.genome.gov/27026645

Three Principles of Data Science: Predictability, Stability, and Computability

51:06
In this talk, I will discuss intertwining importance and connections of three principles of data science. The three principles will be demonstrated in the context of two neuroscience projects and through analytical connections. In particular, the first project adds stability to predictive models used for reconstruction of movies from fMRI brain signals to gain interpretability of the predictive models. The second project employs predictive transfer learning and stable (manifold) deep dream images to characterize the difficult V4 neurons in primate vision cortex. Our results lend support, to a certain extent, to the resemblance to a primate brain of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs).  See more on this video from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/video/three-principles-of-data-science-predictability-stability-and-computability/

Ethical Issues in Data Science

52:47
McGill University Centre of Genomics & Policy Director Dr. Bartha Maria Knoppers present a webinar titled, "Ethical Issues in Data Science." Abstract Big Data discussions often center on related privacy and security issues, to the neglect of the importance of other ethical issues in data-intensive research. The privacy protections in the European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation, for example, although essential, must be balanced with the right of everyone to share in scientific advancement and its benefits, which originates in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and has become the foundation of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health's Framework for Responsible Sharing of Genomic and Health-Related Data. In this context, it is worthwhile examining whether the hitherto antinomy between privacy and security concerns and the benefits of data sharing still remains, or are health data governance frameworks, such as the 2017 OECD Recommendation on Health Data Governance, and other policies beginning to address and assuage such concerns? Presenter Bartha Maria Knoppers, PhD (Comparative Medical Law), is full professor, Canada Research Chair in law and medicine and Director of the Centre of Genomics and Policy, Faculty of Medicine, Human Genetics, at McGill University. She is a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (2009-present ), and Co-Chair of the Regulatory and Ethics Working Group of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health. She holds four doctorates Honoris Causa and she is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Hastings Center (bioethics), the Canadian Academy Health Sciences (CAHS), and of the Royal Society of Canada. She is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and of Quebec. NINR's 2015 Boot Camp provided a foundation in data science focusing on methodologies and strategies for incorporating novel methods into research proposals. Since there was a high demand for the course, the first day of the Big Data Boot Camp was videocast live and is now available in segments on the NINR YouTube channel. To learn more visit www.ninr.nih.gov/bootcamp. In Part 4, Dr. Patti Brennan of the University of Wisconsin-Madison discusses Big Data in Nursing Research.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks

My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
