The Global Renewables Energy Transformation: What is holding us back?

01:17:32
This webinar begins with an overview of REN21’s newly released Renewables 2018 Global Status Report. It then investigates the “two realities” of the renewable energy transformation: (1) dynamic renewable power industry, driving rapid uptake and (2) what is holding the overall energy transformation back. The presentation ends with possible measures needed to accelerate the transformation to a renewable energy future.
Chile: Social and economic challenges - Cristian Parra [Shifting Sands Conference 2013]

01:03:05
[PUBLIC LECTURE 2013] ANCLAS Conference 2013 - Latin America and the Resources Boom For more than a decade, many Latin American countries have benefited from the booming prices of oil, gas and minerals. Extractive industries - for good or ill - have had a profound impact on politics, society and environment in the region. This conference evaluates the resources boom in Latin America, its potential and its problems. Cristian Parra Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, The University of Queensland   Biography Cristian Parra is a Research Fellow at Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM), specialising in social and economic indicators of development in developing countries and mining zones. Cristian is an economist and his work focuses on the socioeconomic impact assessment of large scale mining projects including tax effects, linkage industry, employment, social corporate investment, effects on local and small communities and the analysis of macroeconomic effects. At CSRM, Cristian is involved in a range of projects and activities in Australia, Latin America and Asia–Pacific, focussing on the analysis, monitoring and framework design of human development and quality of life indicators in communities and mining zones. The goal of this research is to improve analysis to support a better understanding of social change processes generated by the extractive industries. Before joining CSRM, Cristian worked as a consultant for eight years in Latin America, advising large mining companies and institutions. Green Energy Is The Future (w/ Ross Beaty, Energy CEO)

24:09
Forget the future, Green energy is here and it's booming. Ross Beaty founded more than 12 resource based companies before switching to green power. Beaty discusses why his business focus changed and where he sees the future in energy. Beaty says, “In terms of new power production, in 2014 globally, there's more new power production from renewable sources than from fossil fuels, which is a very very cool thing. So it's no longer alternative; it's mainstream, it's no longer expensive in all places, it's very much comparable to most other forms of power generation, if not cheaper.” His companies are in geo-thermal, wind, solar and run-of-river power generation. He says more money was invested globally in these forms of energy than in new carbon burning projects in the past year. He points out, however, it is not a glamourous investment. “It's like a utility, it's kind of boring. But it gives you stable and predictable returns.” --- Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue presents Conversations That Matter. Alejandro Aravena: My architectural philosophy? Bring the community into the process

15:54
When asked to build housing for 100 families in Chile ten years ago, Alejandro Aravena looked to an unusual inspiration: the wisdom of favelas and slums. Rather than building a large building with small units, he built flexible half-homes that each family could expand on. It was a complex problem, but with a simple solution — one that he arrived at by working with the families themselves. With a chalkboard and beautiful images of his designs, Aravena walks us through three projects where clever rethinking led to beautiful design with great benefit. M2RES - From Marginal to Renewable Energy Sources Sites (spot 30")

00:35
M2RES is a project co-funded by the European Union through the Programme "South-East Europe 2007-2013". The goal is to recover marginal areas (landfills, quarries, open cast mines, former military areas, contaminated sites, etc.) through investmens in renewable energy sources (photovoltaic, wind, biomass, geothermal, biogas, etc.). The project shows the participation of many partners from the European Union (Italy, Slovenia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria) and from countries involved in the pre-accession process (Montenegro, Serbia, Albania), and includes relevant public actors with complementary interests: national and regional agencies for energy, research centres, the system of Chambers of Commerce, banks. M2RES wants to give impetus to the sustainable development of the European Union, generating economic and social value for areas which suer for marginality, having lost their primary functions. The turning key will be to change them into platforms for the production of renewable energy.

TPP dialogue meetings in Chile comes to a close

02:38
(15 Mar 2017) Representatives from countries that signed the failed Trans-Pacific Partnership concluded Tuesday's dialogue meeting where they discussed a possible new regional trade deal. Senior officials from the 12 countries of the TPP, plus China, Colombia and South Korea, gathered in the seaside resort city of Vina del Mar to share their vision of the future of international trade and commerce. It's the first time the nations have met since President Donald Trump withdrew from the U.S. from the deal. Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Munoz said any possible trade deals must be "concluded in a short term," saying that the Pacific Alliance is in condition to move with sufficient speed while maintaining high standards. The TPP was a centerpiece of U.S. economic policy in Asia during the administration of President Barack Obama. Trump has said he prefers bilateral deals. The White House has said he plans to focus on seeking individual deals with the 11 other nations in the failed partnership, a group representing roughly 13.5 percent of the global economy, according to the World Bank. Korea, Chile to upgrade cooperation from trade, investment

02:11
President Park Geun-hye, who′s currently in Chile on the third leg of her South America tour, held talks with her Chilean counterpart on Wednesday. The two leaders sought ways to upgrade their cooperation from the previously FTA-centered one. Our Choi You-sun reports from Santiago. Reflecting on their decade-long FTA, President Park Geun-hye and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet agreed to take their cooperation beyond just trade and investment. In 2010, Chile launched its ″Start-Up Chile″ project, offering 40-thousand U.S. dollars in capital, a one-year visa and various tax incentives, to selected entrepreneurs from around the world. The program has successfully backed one thousand startups from 75 countries, helping Chile earn the nickname ″Chilecon Valley.″ Korea, also implementing its own measures to foster startups, signed a deal with Chile, to jointly develop new startup programs and to mutually support their ventures. Seoul expects to see some 90 Korean ventures in Central and South America in the next 10 years. Chile′s state broadcaster TVN signed a deal with Korea′s Educational Broadcasting System on consulting and sharing education and cultural contents. Not only is this expected to expand the Korean Wave into education, it will better market products related to Korean animation characters, like its world-famous ″Pororo.″ Santiago plans to increase its electricity from renewable energy sources to 20 percent by 2025. The value of the Chilean energy market is expected to surpass five billion dollars in 2018, and a bilateral deal to cooperate on future renewable energy projects will allow Korean firms to secure a strong presence the Chilean market. President Park′s state visit hzas also moved Korea a step closer to winning some of Chile′s big infrastructure projects, like the one to construct a tunnel linking Chile and Argentina. Bacanora CEO: Lithium becoming an everyday commodity

06:40
Peter Secker, chief executive of Bacanora Minerals Ltd's (LON:BCN, CVE:BCN) says the market for lithium could double over the next decade, in tandem with the rise of renewable energy. Lithium batteries store energy from renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, and Secker says “lithium is becoming more and more an everyday commodity and significant consumption increases over the next decade are going to see demand growth from about 180,000 tonnes a year that it is currently to anywhere north of 350,000 tonnes a year.” He adds that there is “very limited new supply coming into the market”. Bacanora is currently developing the Sonora lithium deposit in Mexico with the feasibility study scheduled to be delivered in in the first quarter of 2017.

For the first time, Model 3 production (28,578) exceeded combined Model S and X production (24,761), and we produced almost three times the amount of Model 3s than we did in Q1. Our Model 3 weekly production rate also more than doubled during the quarter, and we did so without compromising quality. GA4, our new General Assembly line for Model 3, was responsible for roughly 20% of Model 3s produced last week, with quality from that line being as good as our regular GA3 line. We expect that GA3 alone can reach a production rate of 5,000 Model 3s per week soon, but GA4 helped to get us there faster and will also help to exceed that rate. Tesla expects to increase production to 6,000 Model 3s per week by late next month. We also reaffirm our guidance for positive GAAP net income and cash flow in Q3 and Q4, despite negative pressures from a weaker USD and likely higher tariffs for vehicles imported into China as well as components procured from China. Q2 deliveries totaled 40,740 vehicles, of which 18,440 were Model 3, 10,930 were Model S, and 11,370 were Model X. Model S and X deliveries are in line with our guidance provided on May 3. As we previously noted, we are in the process of changing the quarterly production pattern of those vehicles for the various worldwide regions to ensure a more linear flow of deliveries through the quarter. Both orders and deliveries for Model S and X were higher in Q2 than a year ago. Our overall target for 100,000 Model S and Model X deliveries in 2018 is unchanged. 11,166 Model 3 vehicles and 3,892 Model S and X vehicles were in transit to customers at the end of Q2, and will be delivered in early Q3. The high number of customer vehicles in transit for Model 3 was primarily due to a significant increase in production towards the end of the quarter. The remaining net Model 3 reservations count at the end of Q2 still stood at roughly 420,000 even though we have now delivered 28,386 Model 3 vehicles to date. When we start to provide customers an opportunity to see and test drive the car at their local store, we expect that our orders will grow faster than our production rate. Model 3 Dual Motor All Wheel Drive and Model 3 Dual Motor All Wheel Drive Performance cars will also be available in our stores shortly. The last 12 months were some of the most difficult in Tesla’s history, and we are incredibly proud of the whole Tesla team for achieving the 5,000 unit Model 3 production rate. It was not easy, but it was definitely worth it. Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5%. Tesla vehicle deliveries represent only one measure of the company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on a variety of factors, including the cost of sales, foreign exchange movements and mix of directly leased vehicles. Forward-Looking Statements Certain statements herein, including statements regarding future production and delivery of Model S, Model X and Model 3, expected cash flow and net income results, and growth in demand for our vehicles, are “forward-looking statements” that are subject to risks and uncertainties. These forward-looking statements are based on management’s current expectations. Various important factors could cause actual results to differ materially, including the risks identified in our SEC filings. Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Protesters, Police Clash in Chile

01:21
www.santiagotimes.cl Activists have a message for trade ministers meeting in Chile: don’t try to revive the dead TPP. Activists who gathered to protest a summit of the Trans-Pacific Partnership quashed in the U.S. days after Donald Trump took office, in the Chilean coastal town, Viña Del Mar, were dispersed and arrested by the Chilean Carabinero police force. Activists took to Twitter to denounce the treatment they received, charging that they were attacked with tear gas by the police force, and once dispersed they were arrested without being given any legal reasons. One tweet read, “After being excessively repressed, members of the coalition find ourselves detained and are being driven around in a police bus.” A video posted to Twitter also showed riot police charging a crowd of protesters in order to disband them. Representatives of the 12 member states of the TPP together with China, Colombia and South Korea kicked off a two-meeting Tuesday to discuss trade in the Asia-Pacific region and the new outlook for economic cooperation after the United States’ exit from the TPP.

China and Latin America: Seeking a Path to Sustainable Development

01:59:25
The rise of China has been a boon to the economies of Latin America for more than a decade, with Chinese investment particularly active in the energy and mining sectors. However, these investments have triggered a new round of environmental degradation and social conflict, which many Latin American governments have failed to manage properly. At this meeting, speakers will debut a new report that examines not only the environmental conflicts linked to Chinese investment, but also highlight innovative steps taken by Latin American governments and Chinese companies in search of a more balanced approach to commodity-led growth and sustainable development.

Chile's Past ,Present and Future

09:06
This video "Chile's Past ,Present and Future" was created for the Alllende Arts Festival 2010 in Toronto Canada. It is my work as a photojournalist and filmmaker for the last 5 years in Latin America in particular my birth country of Chile. I was there for many historic moments in my countries history beginning with the Death of Augusto Pinochet the day I began work on my documentary "The Pacscua Lama Project" . Ending with a tribute to the 33 trapped miners in the mining town of Copiapo where I lived for most of my time while in Chile. Since I didn't know my own countries history growing up in books or in school this was my way of understanding my countries history , my roots in practice. It is also a study of Chile's past , it's present and a look into its future through pictures. "Un País sin cine documental es como una familia sin album de fotografias" Patricio Guzmán

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy

01:44:59
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change | Allan Savory

22:20
"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert. SHOCKING - ET ALIEN SOLAR SYSTEM REVEALED - Extraterrestrials Might Already Be In Our Neighborhood

SHOCKING - ET ALIEN SOLAR SYSTEM REVEALED - Extraterrestrials Might Already Be In Our Neighborhood From NASA : Earth-Like Exoplanets Discovered - Conference 22-02-2017 "TRAPPIST-1, also designated as 2MASS J23062928-0502285,s is an ultra-cool dwarf star that is slightly larger but much more massive than the planet Jupiter, located 39.5 ly (12.1 pc) from the Sun in the constellation Aquarius. The dwarf star has been shown to host seven temperate terrestrial planets, a larger number than detected in any other planetary system. Astronomers first discovered three Earth-sized planets orbiting the dwarf star in 2015. A team led by Michaël Gillon (fr) at the University of Liège in Belgium detected the planets using transit photometry with the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. On 22 February 2017, astronomers announced four additional exoplanets around TRAPPIST-1. This work used the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope at Paranal, among others, and brought the total number of planets to seven, of which three are considered to be within its habitable zone. The others could also be habitable as they may possess liquid water somewhere on their surface." The Camp and the City: Territories of Extraction

01:18:56
Please join editors, Jeannette Sordi, Luis Valenzuela, and Felipe Vera for a discussion of their new book The Camp and the City: Territories of Extraction. They will be joined in a panel discussion with contributors, Maria Ignacia Arrasate, Sourav Kumar Biswas, and Agustina Gonzáles Cid. Urbanization metabolizes territories surrounding cities as well as territories that are located far beyond the centers themselves and provide the needed resources and goods. Landscapes of extraction are probably one of the most evident examples of this: whole regions are exploited for their resources to ensure the development of others. However, while it is becoming evident that these territories could be considered as part of the urbanization process itself, they are still very marginal in the agenda of urban designers, planners, regional administrators, and political institutions. Territories of extraction are not paid enough attention as places for living themselves – they are in a way the negative of cities: they are what ensures the development, prosperity, and consolidation of cities, but are themselves the emblem of deployment and precariousness. The Camp and the City book aims to articulate a discussion about territories of extraction in order to set up concepts and provide a general overview of their common challenges throughout different landscapes. Calama – the most important mining cluster in Chile and one of the most important hubs for copper extraction in the world – is presented as a case study in order to generate a more specific and evidence-based discussion, offering the ground for the development of a more projective critical view. The Camp and the City: Territories of Extraction is edited by Jeannette Sordi, Luis Valenzuela, Felipe Vera, with essays by Pablo Allard, Maria Ignacia Arrasate, Mariana Barrera, Sourav Kumar Biswas, Diane Davis, Agustina González Cid, Rania Goshn, El Hadi Jazairy, Rahul Mehrotra, Flavio Sciaraffia, Jeannette Sordi, Ricardo Truffello, Luis Valenzuela, Felipe Vera. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the GSD and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.
