The Grateful Dead - Ripple (Studio Version)

04:14
Link to the picture: http://thingstolookathigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/alice-in-wonderland-trippy.png Robert Hunter, wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly also drinking an entire bottle of retsina in the process). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Like many folk songs, "Ripple" addresses itself as a song and an instrument of the performers' emotional expression. Several lines throughout the song echo the 23rd Psalm of the Bible. Trip hard and good, motherfuckers.

This song is featured on our new album, "Listen to the Music," available now: http://bit.ly/2EA9wE8 We are proud to share with you this Song Around The World in honor of the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary. Our friends at JamBase asked us to turn the Grateful Dead's 1970 classic, "Ripple" into a PFC Song Around the world as part of their "Songs Of Their Own" series (http://www.jambase.com/soto.aspx) and after many miles on planes, trains and automobiles we can finally share it with all of you!! "Ripple" is in support of the Playing For Change Foundation's music schools and programs for children worldwide and we need your help. Watch the video and then let’s turn that inspiration we all share into something bigger. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. "Ripple" w/Lyrics- The Grateful Dead

04:22
From their 1970 album "American Beauty". "Ripple" features the brilliant mandolin playing of Jerry Garcia's friend, David Grisman. The sons lyrics were written by Robert Hunter and evoke a certain Spiritual quality about the song and also showcases the bands outstanding folk country style that they could exhibit.

The first time my father played this song for me I was about seven-years-old. I had no idea what it was about then. Almost two decades later he's gone. I don't pretend to be the best singer, and the graphics aren't very good, but I hope you enjoy. Thank you for this song, Dad, and for teaching me its meaning through your successes and failures. I love you.

The Grateful Dead- Ripple

04:14
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music, Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. You who choose, to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone, If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home. La dee da da da, La da da da da, Da da da, Da da, Da da da da da La da da da, La da da, Da da, La da da da, La da, Da da. -RIP Jerry

Today we discuss one of my favorite songs: Ripple by the Grateful Dead. I love this song because of the sound of the music itself, but the message it has. I discuss what I get from it, and the inspiring message that I think it has for anyone trying to make a difference. As always, I invite you to join the Conversation of Our Generation with me and get involved in this dialogue. Comment, Like, Subscribe and Share if you like what I have to say or feel like adding to it. Question me, bring ideas, and correct me because that's what a conversation is. Ripple played by Mark Flynn

03:40
Ripple by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. For Mark Flynn. "I just play and take whatever I get," says Flynn, a soft-spoken California native with an extensive history of playing in clubs, coffee houses and bars--and on the Pearl Street Mall. "I don't believe in begging. I just don't believe in that. It bothers the businesses, it bothers the musicians, it bothers everyone on the Mall. You shouldn't be come up to and asked for things, you know, unless it's a friend or something." Before singing and strumming a Van Morrison cover tune, Flynn explains that he's wary of any restrictions that could eventually lead to entertainers being banned from the Mall, but is critical of zealous panhandlers--often of questionable need. Avoiding the sometimes-rowdy courthouse section mid-Mall, and the often-boisterous downtown Boulder nightlife, he plays days on the west end, never putting patrons on the spot, he says. After all, he knows what that's like. "They ask me for money out of my case," says Flynn, referring to aggressive solicitors. "Sometimes I give it to them, but that's hard to do, you know, because I'm playing myself for money and for the people. I'll play even if people don't give me money." - by P.W. Miller ([email protected]) the original clip is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3pEOHd-28o I took out some obnoxious commentary by the cameraman and some extremely close, obnoxious shots of the singer's mouth and added some shots I took of the sky. You who choose to lead must follow, But if you fall you fall alone, If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home.

Would you hear my voice come through the music, Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are all broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, I don't really care, Let there be songs to fill our air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebbles tossed, And no wind to blow. Reach out your hands if your cup is empty, If your cup is full may it be again. Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night. And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebbles tossed, And no wind to blow. Now you who choose to lead must follow, But if you fall you fall alone. If you should stand then who will guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home. La dee da da da, La da da da da, Da da da, Da da, Da da da da da La da da da, La da da, Da da, La da da da, La da, Da da. Best regards to Mark Flynn if you're out there.. Thanks for the guitar lessons. (probably a hundred or so of the views on youtube were me).. Of Jerry Garcia, he's dead now; I hope that he is grateful. I don't know if he ever believed.. Believing once is all it take, and you are saved; that's right, just once, and after that, there is no losing it. That's grace. It's not called "mediocre" grace, who would want that? It's called amazing grace, and for good reason. In ways, this song "Ripple" is a gospel (good news) song: i.e. "Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men." ( as in "Spring of Living Water", eternal life, through faith in Jesus Christ.), and "That path is for your steps alone." (no one can believe in Jesus Christ for you, you got to do it for yourself.), lastly, "If I knew the way I would take you home." (While I can't 'take you home' per se, I do "know the way"). Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. Drink the water now, believe in Jesus Christ. ..
