With this new short GIA field expedition video you will discover some aspects of the GIA Field Expedition FE67 that took place in June 2015 in order to visit sapphire and opal mining areas in Australia. On the sapphire side we started with Inverell in New South Wales, then moved to the Anakie sapphire field and finally to the Lava plains both of them in Queensland. Each time we were impressed with the technical knowledge about sapphire mining... Enjoy!

"Emerald mining in Zambia" by GIA

09:39
With that new GIA Field video you will be taken with the GIA Field Expedition (FE56) that took place in September 2014 in Zambia. You will surely feel the lure of emerald—central Africa’s green treasure—in this short GIA video. First, you’ll visit the Musakashi, Zambia, emerald mining area where mining is carried out by local people with simple hand tools. Next, you’ll travel with Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu and the GIA team to Zambia’s Kafubu area, one of Africa’s oldest gem-mining areas. “There are maybe 400 mines, and maybe less than 10 are active,” says Pardieu. While there, you’ll witness several active emerald mines. Some are very small-scale and operated by local people, while some, like the MIKU and the KAGEM mines, are very large. The latter is probably the largest colored gemstone mining pit in the world. In this video, you’ll view the entire KAGEM operation—a modern, highly sophisticated mechanized pit mine. As you stand on the rim of the pit, a ripple of explosions blasts ore for processing. You will witness workers recovering emeralds from the pit. You’ll also venture underground into Gemfields’ exploratory underground workings and see the firm’s secure processing and sorting facility. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

Hand Driven Pulsating Jig Sapphire Gold Mining DIY

00:52
This is a quick demonstration of my Pulsating Jig. I made it a few years ago and have recovered a lot of sapphires and some gold with it. I made it for less than Au$100. It can be run with a 18 volt cordless drill or can be operated just as well by hand. Normally I would run it with the drill and slowly feed wash into the top chute. There is a 3mm screen in the bottom of the jig bed. The pulsing of the water concentrates heavier gemstones and gold down to the screen while sand and lighter materials flow past the jig bed. Gemstones and gold smaller than 3 mm are concentrated in the tank while water, silt and small sand exit out of the small waste outlet underneath. The legs are easily removed and the main part can be carried by one person. In some states it should qualify as a “hand operated tool” on fossicking fields when operated by hand. It was fairly easy to make, you would just need some metalwork and welding skills. Parts like block bearings, belts and pulleys are readily available or very cheap to buy on eBay. Thanks for watching. Stephen.
Gemstone mining in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka and Rough Sapphires found

00:32
This rough was found right during our mining trip in May 2017. Video by Ruwanpura Gems. Rough sapphires in various sizes and qualities come straight from the ground right in front of our eyes while shooting this video. Ratnapura is one of the major active mining areas in Sri Lanka. It produces sapphire in many colors, ruby, spinel, tourmaline, alexandrite and other gemstones. Large-scale mechanized mining allows to excavate big pits and work through tons of soil. Large scale gemstone mining is a complex process with lots of machinery involved. Gem mining in Sri Lanka gets many people employed, they work hard day by day to make a living and develop strong muscles. Gem-quality rough is still very hard to produce. Most of rough undertakes some kind of treatment (geuda, heat, beryllium, etc) to result in market-quality sellable gemstones. Добыча драгоценных камней на Шри-Ланке. Месторождение Ратнапура. Сырье сапфиров разных цветов, добытых за время нашей поездки. ***Sapphires splendidly cover the colour spectrum from one end to the other. Though technically a chemically pure sapphire would be colourless, trace minerals inside the stones create the kaleidoscope of tones and saturations reflected. Because of this, each piece is unique in both colour and clarity. Fine quality sapphires are rarer than diamonds. And some are more sought after than others such as the famous blue Ceylon sapphire which has been coveted by royalty for centuries.*** (extract from the MANY FACES OF SAPPHIRE chapter of the book "Sri Lanka Gems" by Vladyslav Yavorskyy)
AQUAMARINE GEMS GEMSTONES STONES MINE HUGE DEADLY CAVE-IN @ LAVRA PEDRA GRANDE BRAZIL

08:41
THIS VIDEO IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY GEMSTONESOFBRAZIL.COM, Lavra Pedra Grande in a Gemstone mine located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, near the small beautiful town of Itaiomi. My mining crew and I arrived and started cleaning this mine at the end of 2013, which was the first major cleanup in the mine since the mine totally caved in 2002. Even though the mine has been a gem mine for over 50 years, and is recognized by the Brazilian government to have the mineral compositions to extract Aquamarine and Tourmaline gemstones which is documented in the mines Brazilian governments mineral rights agreements. Cleanup took 6 months of very very intensive cleaning using a Caterpillar 320D. After the cleanup was completed, my mining crew and I got very busy looking gemstones in the mine. Over the fallowing 6 months we found evidence of green tourmaline and found a lot of Aquamarine gemstones. In the beggining we discovered a crack on top of the mountain above the mine and was told by many sources that this crack was there before 2002. The crack ran along the highest top ledge of mountain above the mine, and at first the crack was very thin and everyone dispelled it as something not to worry about, but we agreed to keep our eyes on the crack. With time, rain, and with hundreds of mining demolition blasting below the mountain the crack was slowly getting larger. The first video above was shot 2 days before the second video was shot showing the mine caving down into the mining areas. It was the day of the first video I decided to pull my mining crew and equipment out of the mine and stop all work because the crack was getting larger, and I could not risk anyone`s life. At this point I felt it was time to close the mine because it was to dangerous to work below the mountain. As a last resort to continue mining for gems my mining crew and I agreed to set explosive charges on another crack on a smaller hill outside the danger zone below the mountain. Two days after I removed everyone from below the mountain`s danger zone we set the explosive charges on top of the small hill. We used 1 liter soda bottles filled with granulated explosives to cause 3 times the normal blast with each soda bottle hoping the explosion would open the cracks on the small hill to cause the hill`s stone ledge to fall down so we could continue mining by making this area safe. We set the explosive charges on the hill and everyone took their safe positions waiting for the explosives to explode. The explosion toke place but was not loud and somewhat drown out by the dirt that was use to cover the soda bottles inside the hills crack hoping to cause more impact in the explosion. We all came out of our safe places to view the result of the blast. After examining the blast site we realized that the blast did not do anything at all to effect in any way the small hills crack, and we all knew this plan will ever be successful in the future. We walked down from the small hill to the truck near the water containers and I was thinking or mining is over until God decides to do his will and cause the mountain`s ledge to fall down and eliminate the dangers caused by the crack on the mountain, which could very possibly be 10 years or more, only God would know. When we arrived at the truck we started to hear a crackling noise coming from the mountain. To our great surprise we started to see sand and stones falling from the mountain. Well the rest of the story is in the video, please watch. After the mountain`s cave in, I decided it was God`s will to take the mountain down in which I felt he was telling me not to give up. The very next day we started cleaning the mine for a second time with 2 tractors which took one and a half months to complete the cleanup and continued to find Aquamarine.

Gemstone mining in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka with Yavorskky

01:00
***Sri Lanka is the world’s oldest continuous source of coloured gems. The Indian diamonds which enriched the Mughals are all but exhausted, the emeralds of Colombia were unknown outside of South America until a few centuries ago, but Sri Lanka can boast almost 2,500 years of production of some of the most beautiful of gemstones, from the shimmering beauty of cat’s eyes to bright sapphires.*** (extract from SRI LANKA - ISLAND OF GEMS chapters of the book "Sri Lanka Gems") Yavorskyy mining trip to Sri Lanka, May 2017. We had the entire mine to ourselves during our visit to Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine. Franklin, NC which is known for Rubies, Emeralds, Sapphires and more. There are several mines where you can pay to dig but only a couple that have unsalted, native sapphire mines! Franklin, NC sits inside the Nantahala National Forest and just a short drive away you can see some spectacular waterfalls including filming locations for films such as The Last of the Mohicans. The Cullinan Diamond (530 Carats) The Cullinan Diamond was discovered in Gauteng, South Africa, in 1905. The large blue-white stone was just 30 feet from the surface and was extracted by a miner with a pocket knife. Easy peasy!! He took it to the office to have it measured, and it weighed 3,106.75 carats, about 621 grams, which made it by far the largest diamond to have been found at the time. 9. The Golden Jubilee (545.67 Carats) Weighing in at 545.67 carats, the Golden Jubilee diamond is the largest cut and faceted diamond in the world. From images, it looks to be a golden orange color, but it's actually graded as a fancy yellow-brown stone. 8. Star of Adam (1,404 Carats) In 2016, the world’s largest blue sapphire was unearthed in Sri Lanka, weighing in at a massive 1,404 Carats- which is the equivalent to almost 10 ounces. It came from a mine in the southern city of Ratnapura- a place that is known as the “city of gems” because of the large numbers of precious stones that are found there. Still, this was a major find- the Sri Lankan gem industry is thought to be worth about 103 million dollars annually, but this one was valued at more than 100 million dollars just by itself!! 7. The Rajaratna Ruby (2,475 Carats) The Rajaratna ruby was first unveiled in 1986 and, at the time, was thought to be the largest ruby in the world. It's had an eventful history, and was thought to have originated in either one of India's two well-known ruby and sapphire regions during medieval times- Kalinga and Kalpur… or Mogok in Burma- places synonymous with discoveries of large gems. 6. The Pearl of Puerto (75 lb) In 2016 the world’s largest pearl was found in the Philippines in the most unlikely of places- underneath a fisherman’s bed, where it had been for at least 10 years. According to the man, he had found it while out fishing when his boat’s anchor had become tangled with a giant clam, and he had to swim down to dislodge it. The pearl is one foot wide, 2.2 feet long, and weighs 75 pounds- which means it could be worth as much as 100 million dollars! 5. Sergio Diamond (3,167 Carats) While it’s not worth as much as other diamonds that have been found, the Sergio Diamond is something quite special- and is thought to have been the largest rough diamond to have ever been discovered. 4. Olympic Australis (17,000 Carats) Australia is undoubtedly the home of opals, and in 1956, at the ‘eight-mile' mining field in the town of Coober Pedy, miners found the largest ever to be discovered. It was dug from a cavity about 30 feet beneath the surface, and they couldn't believe their eyes when they realized what it was. Weighing a massive 17,000 carats, it's 11 inches long and 4.5 inches high. 3. 125West Ruby (18,696 Carats) Rubies are a type of corundum mineral- given their name because of their deep, rich, red hue. They come in a variety of colors, though, with red ones always being called a ruby, and other types being called sapphires. They are the second hardest known minerals, after diamonds, so great care has to be taken when turning rough stones into polished pieces. 2. The American Golden Topaz (22,892 Carats) Topaz is well known for its ability to form huge crystals, but the even the miners of Minas Gerais in Brazil were surprised in the early '80s when they dug up some particularly amazing stones. 1. The Bahia Emerald (1.7m Carats) And of course no list of giant stones would be complete without this big guy! This is the biggest rough gemstone that has ever been found- the Bahia Emerald. It was found in a mine in Bahia, Brazil, in 2001, and is a rock that contains 9 crystals- one of which is the largest single emerald crystal to have ever been discovered. In total, the Bahia rock is thought to contain at least 1.7 million carats, and is estimated to be worth up to 400 million dollars. Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA

02:32
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA. Emerald gemstone has many special qualities. From Sao Paolo, Brazil, Sergio Martins discusses the emerald gemstone history, industry and how sourcing this precious stone is performed in Brazilian mines. He explains the different types of Brazilian mining systems that exist at different locations throughout the country. The Belmont mine has a large area and conducts open pit mining on a large scale. They have consistently produced this precious gemstone for 30 years. Sergio also discusses the Nova Era mine, different from the other emerald mines because it belongs to over 140 people. Located in the area of Garimpeiro, emerald mining in this region involves miners making shafts and looking for the vein that leads to a large concentration of emerald, a “pocket”. Mining can take up to few years before any emerald stones are discovered, but once found, they can produce up to 10 million dollars worth of emeralds in one pocket. Buying and Polishing Lapis Lazuli From Afghanistan by GIA

01:20
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Buying and Polishing Lapis Lazuli From Afghanistan by GIA. What is lapis lazuli and how does one buy and polish it? In this video, Sam Naseri discusses lapis lazuli value factors to consider when buying rough stone. He also discusses lapis lazuli properties, and how rough gem material from Afghanistan is polished. Because lapis lazuli is a hard material, it is not difficult to polish with the right equipment and right polisher. Naseri shows examples of lapis and addresses why many believe the material in Afghanistan mines is higher quality than mines in other locations. 18 Most Rare & Expensive Gemstones

12:58
From the most beautiful stones in the world to the most expensive rocks you’ve ever seen these gemstones are worth a shocking amount of money 8. Ruby Rubies come in vibrant shades of dark red, bright red, and purple-red. Like diamonds, they are found globally except for Antarctica. The most valuable of these gemstones come from Asia, and its main exporters are Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Myanmar. The "pigeon's blood" varieties that spot a pure red and violet gue are by far the most popular. A ruby can go for about $15,000 in the world market because of their limited numbers. 7. Rough Diamond The most desirable of all gemstones is a rough diamond, and it also happens to be amongst the most expensive. The wedding industry could be blamed for the enormous popularity of cut diamonds globally. Besides that, most women wouldn't mind adding a jewelry piece carrying diamonds to her collection. Presently, perfectly cut D color diamonds can fetch as much as $15,000 per carat. 6. Serendibite The extremely rare gemstone originally came from Sri Lanka in 1902. The inosilicate features a complex chemical formula and comprises of aluminum, magnesium, calcium, and boron. One of these gemstones recently came out of the Mogok mines in Myanmar. The serendibite goes for $18,000 per carat. 5. Jadeite The Jade's most beautiful and rarest stone just so happens to also be the most expensive. It has been mined in a variety of colors, but its rich-emerald color continues to be the most favored, and these jadeites originate from Myanmar. However, mauve, apple green, and lavender jadeites are also quite popular with buyers. The stone also forms an integral part of the Mesoamerican, Maori, and Chinese cultures where they are used to carve weapons, fashion jewelry, and also used for medicinal and religious purposes. Jadeites are currently priced at about $20,000 per carat. 4. Grandidierite The greenish-blue or yellow-blue mineral is quite rare and was first discovered in Sri Lanka. However, in the twentieth century, Alfred Grandidier, a French explorer, found a bulk of the minerals in Madagascar. Only about two dozen of the faceted grandidierite exist today. The stone borrowed its name from its founder. The unique gemstone goes for $30,000 per carat. 3. Red Diamond Considered the most expensive gem in the world, the red diamond would set you back US$1 million per carat. In the history of mankind, very only 30 samples of these gemstones have been found, and most weigh under 0.5 carats. Australia's Argyle diamond mine is the only place where these diamonds can be mined, and only a few stones are extracted from it each year. While most people might assume that the red color is an impurity, it comes from the deformation of the crystal lattice. The priciest and largest of these stones ever sold was the Moussaieff Red Diamond that went for $8 million in 2011. 2. Blue Diamond Colored diamonds tend to be amongst the most expensive gemstones in the world because of their rarity and spectacular brilliance. Colored diamonds occur in a spectrum of black, yellow, champagne, red, chocolate/brown, pink, green, and blue colors. The most popular are the Pink Star and Oppenheimer Blue. The Oppenheimer Blue diamond has a vivid blue hue and its the largest of such diamonds to go on auction selling for $57.5 million. That particular piece weighed 14.62 carats translating to $3.93 million per carat. The Pink Star recently broke the record selling for a whopping $71.2 million for a 59.6-carat piece. 1. US$3 Million Rare Black Opal Bobby, an Australian miner, found an opal back in 2002. After he fell on hard times, he sold his mining equipment and took home his last bucket of rocks. He began rubbing the grimy stones and discovered hints of gold and green. It took Bobby two years to whittle the encasing rock away from the gemstone hidden inside. What he ended up with was an extremely rare 306-carat black opal. You'd think that he would cash in on the precious stone, but instead, he kept it tucked safely underneath his mattress for another 12 years. It kind of reminds you of a certain character from The Lord Of The Rings, and Bobby himself said that he considered it one of God's greatest creations that he had to guard. He finally entrusted it to Katherine Jetter, an Australian jewelry designer who debuted it at a Wynn Hotel, Las Vegas Couture show for US$3 million. The black opals generally sell at $3,500 per carat. Thanks for watching coming up next Insane Military Tech and Machines That Actually Exist!
