How Seafood is Caught: Bottom Trawling

00:52
A bottom trawl is a type of fishing net that's pulled along the seafloor. Fishermen commonly use bottom trawls to catch shrimp and bottom-dwelling fish like halibut and sole. However, in addition to these target fish, the nets also catch a variety of ocean life that's usually thrown back dead or dying. Dragging heavy gear across the seabed can also damage sensitive seafloor habitat. The harmful effects of bottom trawling on bottom-dwelling organisms and their habitat can be reduced by modifying the fishing gear or limiting trawling areas. Starfish Walking on the Beach

01:27
Shortcut to get back to this video: WalkingStarfish.com It was early evening, probably around 6pm or so at low tide. We noticed there were starfish walking around on the sand near the water. Some were in tide pools but some were just strolling on the sand, very very very slowly. The ones that were on the sand we carefully relocated back to the ocean or a tide pool. Other people coming out to the beach were fascinated by the large amount of starfish and helped relocate the walkers to the water as well. This was shot on the Outer Banks of North Carolina (specifically Corolla, NC) in early October 2012. Almost the exact same spot on the beach that a WWII mine washed up in late September 2017 (https://outerbanksvoice.com/2017/09/25/unexploded-mines-wash-up-on-hatteras-and-corolla-beaches/) Also, to clear up the questions about the "foot" in the video. It's my son's foot and he was squatting down. He was 4 at the time of the video. Looks like a strange deformed thing but it's just a normal 4 year old's foot. If you enjoyed this video please take a moment to visit Buffalo Monkey on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/buffalomonkeyconservation/) a conservation focused page that initially introduced this video to the world by posting to Facebook (with my full permission of course). Legends Of The South Pacific

52:24
Mitchener’s book “Tales of the South Pacific” was an inspiration for the film, and the interest in Vanuatu and the Solomon’s today. Ben travels through the scattered and remote islands of Vanuatu and the Solomon’s, in search of Mitchener’s tales and other legends. On Pentacost Island, the age old ritual still continues of warrior men building makeship bamboo platform towers up to 27 meters high, then leaping from them with two springy vines round their ankles to break their fall. This land diving ritual is said to guarantee an abundant yam crop in the next season. At the islands’ of Tanna and Epi, friendly dugong come in close to shore and swim with the snorkelers, the only wild dugong in the world that intentionally makes friendly contact with humans. With many active volcanoes and hot springs and fumaroles, the natives cook their food in this hot water , and a strange megapode bird lays its eggs in the hot sand. While Tanna Island is famous for its active volcano, it also has a strange sect that worships a man called Jon Frum. It’s a form of Cargo Cult that began after the war. Its supporters have built an airfield in the jungle and constructed wooden replica aircraft to entice more of Jon Frums’ planes full of cargo to land on Tanna. On Aneityum Island there are petroglyph rock engravings representing the sun, stars, people, birds and fish. Islanders claim these are the work of an earlier people. There is a tribe called the Big Nambas, and another called Small Nambas, and it's all to do with the size of their penis sheath, which is all the men wear . It’s a two-day hike into their remote village. Santo Island is where Mitchener was based in the war , and his experiences there became the film “South Pacific” and the book “Tales of the South Pacific”. More than half a million Americans were briefly stationed here before sailing off to battle elsewhere in the Pacific. When the war ended, Santo was turned into a huge junkyard of surplus war material. Ben dives at Million Dollar Point where endless supplies of new equipment were dumped into the sea. Nearby is the huge wreck of the President Coolidge, a 200-metre long luxury liner that was turned into a troop ship. Carrying 5000 marines, she hit two American mines and sank so close to shore, all but two men leaped to safety. Down below the old hospital site is an iron cottage under a huge tree on the beach front. This was Bloody Mary’s brothel. Local legend has it that convalescing soldiers would walk from the hospital to the brothel where they’d test their fitness before returning to the battle front. The numerous islands of Vanuatu are alive with legends.

Completely farm raised bluefin tuna

07:27
A dream has come true of completely farm-raising bluefin tuna to aid sustainability of marine stocks worldwide From the development of fish farming technologies of commercially important fish to practical models of industry-supporting research and completely farm-raising bluefin tuna, the Fisheries Laboratory aims at attaining the world's highest level of research and education. Completed-cycle culture to replenish depleted fish stocks The bluefin tuna is the most prized of 1he tuna family. It is a large fish that grows to 3 m in length and 500 kg in weight as an adult. As the result of its good taste and high price, it has been overfished in recent years, resulting in the decrease in numbers. As a countermeasure, action has been taken worldwide to reduce catches. Today, a large quantity of the marketed bluefin tuna is farm-raised, which comes from wild-caught seed that have been raised to marketable size. If the fry are overfished, it is foreseen that farm-raised numbers will also decline. To maintain supplies under such severe conditions, technology for completely farm-raising bluefin tuna is needed. This technology Involves raising artificially hatched larvae to adults, collecting eggs from them and artificially hatching those eggs to create the next generation. The fish are farm-raised in all stages without requiring wild stock. fish farm fish farming Tuna Overfishing bluefin tuna, bluefintuna, giant bluefin bigeye tuna tuna nutrition facts how to start fish farming business fish farming blue fin tuna value blue fin tuna migration blue fin tuna pics blue fin tuna habitat how much is a blue fin tuna worth northern blue fin tuna blue fin tuna regulations blue fin tuna images blue fin tuna population blue fin tuna speed blue fin tuna sashimi cost of blue fin tuna big blue fin tuna blue fin tuna farming blue fin tuna for sale blue fin tuna wiki tuna blue fin blue fin tuna endangered blue fin tuna fish most expensive blue fin tuna blue fin tuna size biggest blue fin tuna blue fin tuna sushi blue tuna fish southern blue fin tuna blue fin tuna fishing blue finned tuna blue tuna overfishing in new england overfishing in america overfishing in the united states overfishing problems in the ocean statistics of overfishing articles about overfishing overfished fish list overfishing of the oceans overfishing in florida article on overfishing possible solutions to overfishing overfishing in oceans overfishing the oceans overfishing in the pacific ocean problem of overfishing overfishing the ocean pros and cons of overfishing overfishing of cod facts on overfishing overfishing cod ocean overfishing overfishing laws ways to stop overfishing overfishing in the ocean overfishing facts for kids the effects of overfishing effect of overfishing problems of overfishing history of overfishing how can we stop overfishing how to prevent overfishing overfishing video stop overfishing what causes overfishing overfishing in hawaii solutions for overfishing overfishing in japan how to stop overfishing why is overfishing a problem overfishing effects overfishing in australia solutions to overfishing overfishing articles overfishing solutions effects of overfishing overfishing problems overfishing facts

Mud crabs are as much a Queensland icon as Fourex or the Brisbane Broncos. Mud crabs are harvested by professional fishers throughout the Queensland coast from Southport to Karumba, and generate almost $10 million in wharf value to the States economy. Mud crabs are sold mostly as an icon species to the tourist and restaurant trade. Click here for more info http://www.qsia.com.au/mud-crab-blue-swimmer-crab-fisheries.html

Top 5 Smallest Countries in the World

03:57
5 – San Marino - 61 km² San Marino is a tiny country 61 square kilometers in size that is completely surrounded by Italy. It has a population of 32,000 people, one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, no national debt and more cars than people. It’s located two and half hours drive south of Venice near the coast of the Adriatic Sea. San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world. San Marino is also one of the wealthiest countries in the world in terms of GDP per capita. 4 – Tuvalu - 26 km² Tuvalu formerly know as Ellice Islands is located between Hawaii and Australia. It’s total land mass is 26 kilometers squared, when viewed from above is essentially the ring of a large underwater land mass that hasn’t quite breached the surface yet. Tuvalu has a population of 10,650 people which come from Polynesian descent. Most of the people live in Funafuti and the surrounding connected land to it. The traditional foods eaten in Tuvalu are pulaka, bananas, breadfruit, taro, coconut and seafood. Locals often catch flying fish on a boat with a spotlight and a butterfly net. 3 – Nauru - 21 km² Nauru is a tiny island off the coast of Australia being only 21 square kilometers in size. It is the smallest island nation in the world but not the smallest country. It was once one of the richest countries in the world back with the boom of Phosphate mining in the 1970’s. Most of the phosphate is gone now and since the country has struggled until Australia started up a detention camp on the island. The camp itself has created over 100 jobs as well as helping all the local businesses. Before the camps were setup the unemployment rate was around 90%. This was due to the country being so rich from mining that wealth was distributed and the people of Nauru no longer felt the need to work. This had an extra effect of people no longer, fishing or gardening and became very sedentary. Soon followed as the importation of western food which has lead to 97% of the population being overweight or obese. Now over 40% of the population suffers from type 2 diabetes. 2 – Monaco - 2 km² Monaco is an incredibly tiny country only 2 square kilometers in size located on the south western tip of France. It is bordered on 3 sides by france and 1 side by the Ligurian sea. Monaco is known for 2 things really, first gambling. There are 5 casinos in Monaco, 3 of which have been featured in 3 different James Bond movies. Secondly Monaco is known for the annual Monaco Grand Prix race which runs through the narrow streets with tight turns at high speeds. Most of Monaco’s 36,000 residents are millionaires and billionaires with only 1/5th the population actually born there. Monaco is a constitutional monarchy dating back to the 1300s. It is run by the Grimaldi family, the oldest ruling house in Europe. 1 – Vatican - 0.44 km² The Vatican is the smallest country in the world at only 0.44 square kilometers. Located in the city of Rome, the Vatican is known for having the largest church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica. The Vatican also has the smallest population of any country in the world at 842 people. That includes over 100 swiss guards, cardinals, clergy and one nun. The bulk of the population live abroad in diplomatic positions around the world. The swiss guard, you know those guys in fully looking jester outfits, were hired in 1506 to protect the pope and has been this way ever since. Benito Mussolini signed the papers in 1929 allowing the Vatican to be it’s own country. Along with it’s freedom they were given 92 million dollars (around 1 billion dollars today). The Vatican GPD ranks 18th richest in the world which primarily comes from donations from Catholic churches, souvenirs, stamps, collectables and museum tour fees. Sea Shepherd joins forces with Tanzania to stop illegal fishing

04:28
For years, illegal fishing vessels have operated off the African coast of Tanzania with impunity. But now, poachers and other illegal operators are being boarded, inspected, and arrested thanks to a new coalition of ocean conservationist and law enforcement. Sea Shepherd has partnered with Tanzanian authorities for Operation Jodari, a campaign to patrol the country’s sovereign waters with agents from the Deep Sea Fishing Authority, Tanzanian Navy and the Multi-Agency Task Team (MATT) stationed onboard Sea Shepherd’s fast patrol vessel, the Ocean Warrior. These agents have the authority to board, inspect and arrest vessels in violation of Tanzanian law, and have already made three arrests in the first 20-day patrol. The MATT is led by the Tanzania Police Force and includes the Tanzania Forest Services, the Wildlife Division, Fisheries Division, Tanzania Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Tanzania Intelligence and Security Service. How to use a fish finder and GPS, Lowrance and Furuno when fishing!!

02:50
http://www.reefari.com This Video on how you use your fish finder and GPS shows how to use them together and sound out a new area. I'm using a Lowrance fish finder and Furuno GPS. Try and buy the best gear you can afford, as you will get better results. Also a bigger screen makes for easier use. I like to use two separate stand alone units. I beleve this is easier to work with and gives a bigger better view of your GPS And fish finder. We had perfect conditions in this video which makes it alot easier to sound around a new area, and search the structure and find out where the fish are located. I work the area in a circular motion as per the GPS, and watching the depth sounder closely you can see changes in the bottome and where the fish are located. I love the old Lowrance 7500C as it has Icons which are great for marking where the fish are or structure is. I'll even map out where a big bommie or rock is, which makes it easy to drift the mark or anchor on the waypoint perfectly. Unfortunately I don't think the new Lowrance GPS Plotters have Icons anymore? A real shame, heaps of waypoints, but the Icons were an awesome feature. I have a Furuno FCV 585 sounder with a 1 Kw transducer. Great for fishing in really deep water, although we usually fish in about 50 metres to 70 metres at the most. Play with your settings and find what you like best. I like a manual gain of 4.7, but once again this will depend on your boat and how your transducer is set up. Mine is through hull in a wetbox. Don't be afraid to sound around an area and find where the fish are holding, then you can set your drift up to work where the fish are for best results. Please subscribe for more great fishing tips and videos coming soon, Cheers Greg This video was filmed on a recent mothershipping trip fishing some 200 kilometres offshore and phenomenal fishing to match, more info at our website at http://www.reefari.com/charters/mackay-fishing-charters.html

Greenpeace Teams Up with Mozambique Government to Protect Fisheries

03:42
The Indian Ocean is home to some of the world's richest tuna fishing grounds. They are a valuable resource to coastal states and an attractive fishing opportunity for foreign fleets. Unfortunately illegal and unreported fishing is a major problem in the region. For countries like Mozambique, monitoring their waters is not an easy task due to resource constraints. Greenpeace has recently been working with the Mozambican government, providing fisheries officials with a platform to monitor and patrol the country's waters.

Australia's biggest contribution to global warming is the coal we export. We are about to rapidly increase our coal exports while the Arctic sea ice reaches its lowest point on record. Australia must heed this warning and not proceed with plans to build huge new mega mines in the Galilee Basin and coal ports in the Great Barrier Reef. Environmental campaigns are won on the back of hard work by community members. We need your help to save our climate and our Reef. Please become a Reef Defender today: www.savethereef.org.au

Farmers with a Future (documentary, 2018)

41:19
Agriculture in the Netherlands is on the brink of a major change. By producing more and more, farmers seem to have lost sight of what farming really means. In this documentary, three Dutch farmers show how they work and why they have opted for sustainable management. These 'farmers with a future' now make a difference for the future and are forerunners of an agriculture that is honest and sustainable. A production by Yara Hannema, commissioned by Milieudefensie.

Fukushima Disaster: BAN Japan's Agriculture Products! Pleads to "make it stop!" Update 9/6/13

12:34
Japan Gov't : We've been lying the whole time about radioactive contamination in our agriculture products, but we promise to tell you the truth in the future, if you just keep buying our fish and other foods... We chose not to disclose information because it might damage our reputation... We're going to PUSH our Fish on the WORLD and EXPAND our Market! We're setting up a special area inland of Japan... you won't even have to buy directly from the "banned areas"... we can import contaminated fish and sell it to you from a nondisclosed location. In a Safe zone. (we don't have to tell you where the fish/produce/dairy were actually obtained). Plus, remember, we're promising to be really really honest with you from now on... too weary to edit today. S.Korea bans marine products from eastern Japan The officials also say the country will ask for test certificates if even a trace of radioactivity is found in fish, dairy products and other foods from anywhere in Japan. But South Korean consumers are even avoiding marine products from their own country now because of fears over the tainted water leaks. Fishermen and Mayors urge govt. to stop Fukushima leak God Forbid you Ruin your Reputation Fishing industry worried about S.Korean import ban The head of a local fisheries cooperative said the ban came just as the organization was going to expand exports of processed fish products. Fishermen in Japan are Pissed. Amari plans special zone for agricultural exports Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister says he hopes to set up a national strategic zone to promote agricultural exports. 2 sites found fit for radioactive waste storage Japan's Environment Ministry says 2 candidate sites for storing radioactive waste in Fukushima Prefecture are fit for the purpose as their bedrock is firm. Ministry officials on Friday briefed a panel of experts on the results of land surveys at the sites in Oh-kuma and Naraha towns. Both are near the disabled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The officials said workers dug deep into the ground at the sites and confirmed the presence of strong bedrock beneath low-lying land, plateaus and hills. They concluded that construction of intermediate facilities to store radioactive soil and debris is feasible at the sites. The ministry has a 3rd candidate site in Futaba Town, also near the plant. Officials have finished briefing residents about the plan, and hope to request the start of a land survey soon. Senior Vice Environment Minister Shinji Inoue told reporters that the assessments at the 2 sites are encouraging, and that the ministry hopes Futaba will also accept a survey as soon as possible. Sep. 6, 2013 Final pitches before 2020 Olympic venue choice the Fukushima issue is coming up a lot in recent talk about Tokyo's bid. Latest Headlines: http://enenews.com/ Lies? Armed guards on board ships

Spain's Ministry of Defence has authorized the use of large calibre weapons, up to 12.70 millimetres, on board tuna vessels fishing in the Indian Ocean to combat pirates. The measure was announced by Defence Minister Carme Chacón after meeting with representatives of tuna vessels and shipowners of the Spanish fleet in the Indian Ocean. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has announced that from November 1 it will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to Commonwealth-endorsed commercial fishing vessel operators who fail to have a properly maintained vessel monitoring system (VMS) unit operating at all times. The European Commission (EC) has presented its first proposal on fishing allowances for 2012 for certain fish stocks in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea.

The work of local magistrates in British Columbia, 1953 -- Film 3867

17:53
A mature, handsome fit man is fishing with rod and line, standing in a fast running river. A member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), in immaculate uniform, is guided to the man by the 10 years old son of the fisher man and we learn that he is the local magistrate and has documents to sign so that the policeman can do his duty. After signing the summonses the man leaves the river and walks across manicured lawns to a lovely house. The commentary tells us he has lived there for 30 years and everybody knows and respects him. He sits in his study at a desk. We are told his area is about 10,000 square miles of rugged forest and lakes. The scene becomes a small fishing harbour with about 20 boats. A boat carries the magistrate to a forest clearing. We see commercial logging with the felling of a huge tree by two men with a motorised chainsaw. The Magistrate greets an old friend who shows him a similar saw to the one that has been stolen. They see a young man, aged about 19/20 who we are told is proving to be a good "cat driver" after problems earlier in his youth. The scene becomes driving through town in the rather splendid white convertible that is the magistrates, where he parks the car and enters the busy police station. Discussions with a corporal of the RCMP precede the bringing from a cell of a middle-aged working man who admits guilt and is fined. The scene becomes a group of fishermen sitting on the dock, smoking, drinking and talking. The group include the young man from the caterpillar tractor who boasts that he got off last time and will get off this time for his father knows the magistrate. The magistrate visits the father of the young man at his home and they go together shooting grouse in the woods. Father and JP sit on a fallen tree and discuss the wayward son without reaching any conclusions. Rather shadowy night scenes possibly show a chain saw being moved by boat. Breakfast with his full family of about 6 people is taken by the JP on the lawn. It is interrupted by a male visitor's arrival by car and then by police who bring with them a woman who wishes to bring an action against her husband of many years. JP seeks to dissuade her and gives advice. Between the visitors the JP energetically chops logs, probably to ease his tensions. We are in court, a formal situation with all persons present correctly and soberly dressed. The young tractor driver is found guilty of theft and told that he had his chance when a youth and now needs the shock of a prison sentence to get him back on the right life-style. The man is sentenced to six months in prison and led away to the cell. We see the older man and woman from previous scenes happily reconciled. The JP leaves court and drives away in his white car and we see him return to fishing in the same fast flowing river that we saw at the start. Roderick Haig-Brown or Roderic Haig-Brown
