Pivot Tables are such a massive turn on, honestly.

You say not to use blank rows or columns but your example download has these in an I cannot create a pivot. What are you meant to do first before you can create a pivot?

Hello great tutorial.  How do you add a total sales amount on the graph that you created?  Maybe add the info on the right upper corner or anywhere where it shows the total for all salesperson.  thank you

Can you explain how to create a living Pivot table. This shows how to create one from past data what about if we keep making changes to the source data.

Was just given a project at work that uses Pivot Tables and it's the first time I've ever used it (nobody else in the office knows how to use it either). This video is like Godsend! Thank you for this!

Thanks so much! Happy to hear you are learning pivot tables and hopefully you can teach the others in the office too. :-)

Why is nobody giving a more theoretical description of a pivot table. I like maths and then Excel is just the GUI. I find the theory first way way better then clicking stuff where i don't know what is done.
Excel Campus - Jon (20 days ago)
Hi Lothar, I do have a free webinar that goes into more detail on how pivot tables work. It's really about understanding the structure of the source data, and how the pivot table does grouping and calculations on the fields. Here is a link to the webinar, if you want to check it out. https://www.excelcampus.com/pivot-secrets-webinar I hope that helps.

Hi, when creating the first pivot table (3,30'' onward) you skipped to explain last row: "Choose whether you want to analyze multiple tables ... also, is there any automatic option to update and extend source data (f. e. if we use data from the web)
Excel Campus - Jon (20 days ago)
Hi Zeljko, Great questions! Here are my answers. 1. The "Add this data to the data model" option under "analyze multiple pivot tables" allows us to use PowerPivot to do more advanced calculations. It also allows us to create relationships between data sources to produce pivot tables based on multiple data sets. Here is an article on PowerPivot I have that explains more. https://www.excelcampus.com/pivot-tables/powerpivot-instead-vlookup/ 2. There are a few ways to automatically update pivot tables. We can use a setting in the pivot table options to update the pivot tables when the file is opened. We can also use a simple macro to refresh the pivot tables whenever the source data changes. Here is video that explains more about those options. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI1UQcYtl1A 3. You can use Power Query to pull data into Excel from the web. Here is an article on Power Query. https://www.excelcampus.com/powerquery/power-query-overview/ The data is output into an Excel Table. We can then use the Excel Table as the source of the pivot table, so that any new rows are AUTOMATICALLY included in the pivot table. Here is an article that explains 5 reasons to use Excel Tables for the source of a pivot table. https://www.excelcampus.com/pivot-tables/table-source-pivot-table/ I hope that helps. Thanks again and have a nice day! :-)

Thank you for the great tutorial, it has been very helpful! I have a fairly large data set that has labels horizontally across the top as well as vertically along the left column. Can I manipulate this data through a pivot table, or do they only work with one horizontal label row?
Excel Campus - Jon (20 days ago)
Hi Paula, Thanks for the nice feedback, and great question! You will most likely want to unpivot this data first. I have a free webinar that explains more about the structure and layout of the source data. Here is a link to register. https://www.excelcampus.com/pivot-secrets-webinar I also have a blog post that covers some of the basics as well. Here is a link to that. https://www.excelcampus.com/modeling/structure-pivot-table-source-data/ I hope that helps. Thanks again and have a nice day! :-)

I love Excel and like it a lot more than quicken. Is this something that I can do instead of using quicken. Is there a way that I can update and pull information from the bank???
Excel Campus - Jon (20 days ago)
Hey Joey, Great question! You can definitely use Power Query in Excel to pull in data from exported csv or Excel files. This can be mostly automated, except for the export part. Here is an article on Power Query that will help get you started with that. https://www.excelcampus.com/powerquery/power-query-overview/ Pulling data directly from the website will be a bit more tricky, and depend on the sites security, but can be possible with VBA. I hope that helps.

Delly Afshari (2 months ago)
Thank you for this informative video, it's wonderful. I do have a question however, I have hard time formatting my dates. I'm using dates instead of Revenue (your example), and as soon as I insert it in my Values section, the dates change to 01/01/1999. I've tried different formatting on my source data, but can fix it. Would it be possible to get an explanation? Also, I can't find the Part 2 of this video. THANK YOU
Excel Campus - Jon (20 days ago)
Hi Delly, When putting dates in the Values area a lot will depend on the calculation type. You will likely want to change the calculation to MAX or MIN to display a single date for the intersection of data. Summing dates usually doesn't make sense in the Values area. Again, a lot depends on the data. Here is an article on how the date system works in Excel, which might help. https://www.excelcampus.com/functions/how-dates-work-in-excel/ Here is a link to part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g530cnFfk8Y I hope that helps. Thanks again and have a nice day! :-)
