Jonny and the Brad head to a small town in Norway's Arctic circle to discover the truth behind claims the country has the best homebrew scene in the world. Huge thanks to the people of Mosjoen, especially Per, our new friends at Vikgarden, and all the Espens. That was most interesting. So, the law in Norway has played a big role in creating this home brew movement? I had relatives that used to make corn whiskey in the Southern U.S. I have two great uncles who did ten years in prison for having small stills in woods. Home brewing stayed illegal in the States until Jimmy Carter's presidency. The nature of mass produced beer in America has inspired the craft beer movement in America.

The Craft Beer Channel Indeed it was a long sentence but the courts were trying to please the Women's Temperance League, the religious fascists that brought America prohibition and put millions upon millions of dollars into organized crime, while greatly increasing alcoholism in the States. The women's temperance league were the radical feminists of their era. Look how powerless they actually were. Not so powerless, judging by their horrendous effect on the nation. Both of my uncles actually served most of those ten year sentences. Parol was much more difficult to obtain than it is now, you served much more of the sentence before parol was possible. Local politics was involved in the arrest and the sentencing. One uncle was arrested while sitting a still that belonged to the sheriff's brother. The owner knew not to be there and got my uncle to watch the still for him while he went to buy supplies. It was a total set up, something that was very common. America is a very corrupt country with a huge amount of moral pretense. This was just business as usual. This is part of why I became a Canadian. I was introduced to home brewing my first week in Canada, although that was well before the home brewing and craft beer movement got started here.
crikey! That's a long prison term... but yes, pricing means homebrewing is VERY prevalent in Norway, but it's also down to the fact that they have an adventurous and experimental spirit I think. Probably the weather - means they have to be inside more.

Also, you guys have some great beards
The Craft Beer Channel (2 years ago)
haha, we've been workin on them for years.
James Cooper (2 years ago)
Aren't the laws in place because of the cold? The arctic circle and how alcohol affects the body, you can freeze and die. Or is it just Norway and how they want things to be? There are laws like that in Alaska and Greenland and places where you can't have alcohol in the arctic circle.
James Cooper (2 years ago)
+agaronek ahh interesting, thank you:)
agaronek (2 years ago)
It's not about the cold. Same rules apply in all of Norway, also well south of the artic circle ( I live a 2 hours ferry trip from Denmark and same rules apply here). There are even stricter rules in Sweden though , were the state sells everything above 3,5%.( The state shops are only about bottles, cans and boxes for private consumption though, and are of course excluding pubs, bars and nightclubs, which, thank God, are not run by the state in neither Sweden or Norway)
James Cooper (2 years ago)
+The Craft Beer Channel interesting, cool. Keep up the sweet content:)
The Craft Beer Channel (2 years ago)
The local people didn't mention that but it could be a really old historic law. To be honest we didn't research the matter and they didn't seem to care why!

The Norwegians seem quite anti-social/awkward haha
skog77 (3 months ago)
Some might be apprehensive about speaking english on camera. :)
Alf Berger (2 years ago)
I think this depends a lot on where in Norway you are, as a norwegian these people seem a bit more shy and awkward than the people in my hometown.
Jørgen Stensrud (3 years ago)

How much does it cost to home brew w/o tax compared to buying retail in Norway?
Ole Fredrik Ommundsen (3 years ago)
It`s just under 1£ when you brew at home, on average that is
The Craft Beer Channel (3 years ago)
+ArielHelwany a lot cheaper! We payed an average of £9 a pint in the pubs.
Tim Mcnally (3 years ago)

SuperHeisan (3 years ago)
you need to practice your Norwegian! hahahahh
The Craft Beer Channel (3 years ago)
+SuperHeisan I will for next time.
greenronin (3 years ago)
I honestly recon Norway is one of the best countries in the world for beer. If you can get over the price (takes some doing/budgeting) you can literally have any beer type you want and it will nearly always be top quality. That goes from the commercial 4.7 pilsner cans in the supermarket (cheapest) all the way to the IPAs and Strong lagers from the pubs (most expensive but probably worth it in fairness) and at vinnmonopolet.
Ade Larsen (2 years ago)
+greenronin Aass Fat øl is the best commercial beer in Norway - From norways oldest brewery.
The Craft Beer Channel (3 years ago)
+greenronin no arguing they have pretty good access to good beer, and lots of breweries we were surprised to see out of their home countries, particularly Belgian.
